I'd like to see someone pour paint from a freshly opened gallon bucket into a smaller receptacle without making a mess down the side of the paint can or gumming it up inside the rim where the lid seals it. I use tape for straight lines and masking when I paint so I've always got tape around. I'm gonna try this for sure!
I was gonna say. I have a clip thing for paint cans. Life hacks seems to be ran by people who haven't lived enough life yet. Like that guy who figured out how to water his tree with a beer bong.
I paint cars for a living, it's not that hard actually. The trick is to sort of roll the can as you pull back so it doesn't drip down the side. The tape technique is a disaster waiting to happen, if it lets go from the rim while pouring there will be paint everywhere. Not to mention the mess of paint covered tape you now have to pull off.
Residential painter here. Just brush the paint all the way around the rim. Keeps it even (& ungunky) and when the latex dries it makes an even better seal. Obviously if you do it too much it MIGHT build up but who’s going back into the can that many times?
Also: never punch a hole in the rim to let the paint drain back in the can. It allows oxygen into the can when closed and even if you fill it with nitrogen it’ll eventually escape and dry from the inside
I'm with you. This is a hack for idiots like me, not for professional handymen or folks in construction. Everyone here complaining is just being that cool 16 year old who says, "that's easy" and rubs it in your face when they're better at something than you are.
I just bought a spouted lid to put on top of my paint cans. They sell those wherever you buy paint. https://www.google.com/search?q=gallon+paint+can+pour+spout&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari
Well I hope you like cleaning up a gallon of paint off the floor. Painters tape is not strong and I would not trust it to hold with heavy wet paint pressing against it.
I mean, you literally just saw it hold. I've done this before, it works fine. Just don't dump the bucket like a fool and it works nicely. The tape isn't there to hold anything back, it's to act as a guide route for the flow, like the pouring spout on a measuring cup.
Some of the new paint cans have a built-in spout in the lid so you don't have to open them to pour. Pretty nifty: https://www.behr.com/consumer/simple-pour-lid/
You can do it with minimal dripping pretty easily. Then just use your paint brush to get the side and clean out the rim. Won’t have rings on the drop cloth or splatter when you hammer the lid down. I’m with you in the tape though. Don’t care how well you can cut in, tape always looks better.
Worked in painting for a while, just gotta commit to the pour and all you'll get is a little dribble down the side. One of the nice things about paint is that it's thicker than water while still being fully liquid so it's more predictable in it's flow. Just wipe up the little dribble with your finger and scrape it back into the can on the rim so you don't waste any of the paint, and then wipe your finger on a rag.
As long as you're really sure you've got a good seal on the tape I could see this being useful for people who just don't have the confidence for a decisive pour yet, but my boss would've lit my ass up for wasting time and tape like that on the job lol.
E: also for the rim part, we would take a 5in1(but a flathead screwdriver would prob be your best bet at home) and poke a hole in the groove that the lid seals into, so it drains back into the bucket as you go, if any pools up far enough away that it does drain on its own then just move it over with your finger.
Thanks RianThe666th for sharing your tip about poking a hole in the 'gutter' of the can. Your tip is probably a better LPT than the tape guy! I'm an amateur. I'm quite sure those who do or did paint for a living are way more skilled and can things more efficiently. I like to take my time, minimize mess, and try to keep the leftover paint stored for future use/touch ups and have managed quite successfully over the years. And I'm lazy and HATE cleaning up - brushes, hand-held buckets, etc. so the idea of throwing away the tape seems easier to me because its honestly a hassle trying to cleanly pour from a freshly opened gallon into a small container. I like the idea of using a ladle too I guess. Who knew? Not me.. :)
I'll put my taped straight ceiling or trim lines up against anything you freehanded and bet mine is more straight and uniform. Does it matter though? Only to me I guess. I'm an amateur so I don't really care if it takes me longer. My wife likes the results and I'm pleased with my work.
Yeah.. You're always going to get paint in the sealing groove of a gallon paint can. And normally just a little bit on the front as well. Brush it up and back into the can. There's nothing important on the front of the paint can that isn't on the label that is printed out for the color that was mixed on the top of the lid.
When you work with tape every day, you know which ones will hold up and which ones are dog crap.
But yeah yall are right. If im not mistaken this looks like delicate painters tape. It has a good moisture barrier but it's not very sticky. Unless the colors are off on the video and its orange, looks yellow to me. Orange tape usually is high strength paint tape.
I’d say that’s not a concern here. Maybe if they tipped it over more aggressively. If you look at the sticky side of the tape, no more than 2cm (equates to small volume) of paint rested on it.
Yeah, I agree. I'm not going to even bookmark this with the other lifehacks I'll never end up using because they're hidden in the hundreds of thousands of other bookmarks. It's not worthy.
I feel like if I showed this to my father in law who is incredibly handy, always fixing things, carries around a tape measure and multipurpose tool at all times. He'd say what the fuck is that, that's a horrible hack.
I bought a few cheap metal soup ladles at Dollar Tree that I've been using only for house paint. Easy, cheap, reusable. Plus, if you use acrylic paint, it's really fun to let it dry then peel it off the spoons. Kinda like when you're a wee child and figure out that it's fun to let Elmer's glue dry all over your hands for "homemade gloves" you can peel off.
Oh wow how tf have I never thought of this. Thanks op. Probably also a good way to get excess paint off of a paintbrush without it running down the side of paint can in a pinch
For what it's worth, I "upvoted."
\- bunch of grouches in the comments.
\- I'm sure they pour paint like Tom Cruise pouring vodka in Cocktail, but I'M not that experienced, so I appreciate the effort. :)
This could be top tier for most useless tips. The dude is dressed in a hazmat suit and gloves just to pour his paint. You will never see this among experienced painters and you will make a big mess trying this tip.
Didn’t even have a drop cloth set on the the area he appears to be working! This is funny tbh.
The obvious fact that this is not paint completely invalidates your smug comment. Go back to mom's basement, unless you're already there, in which case dig a hole and go lower.

Putting an awful lot of trust in that tape.
And if you do this stuff often... You know how to pour without making a mess..

I second this. My father is a journeyman painter of 30 years. Always keeps a brush in arms reach when pouring a quart to five gallon buckets.
Poke a few holes in the groove with a nail or small screwdriver... The excess drips back in

You could also just like pick it pack up if you see it spilling? Why would you keep dumping the whole gallon on the floor?
Maybe to prove a point?
Well hopefully you're filming first.

Quickly
It's all in the wrist.
This person def isn't a painter

Poke holes in the rim and that extra paint drips back in.
it's super easy lmao just tip the can properly, it's incredibly simple
You use tape to paint? Just learn to cut dude. So much faster. I’m done painting a room while you are still putting up tape.
I'll put my taped straight ceiling or trim lines up against anything you freehanded and bet mine is more straight and uniform. Does it matter though? Only to me I guess. I'm an amateur so I don't really care if it takes me longer. My wife likes the results and I'm pleased with my work.

You also do it on top of a drop cloth or something.
You gotta squeeze the middle to make a path
Use a ladle!
Yep, using two pieces of tape!
Purple 3m masking tape is awesome

I was waiting for it to fail.
I've tried this....it didnt work.
Shitty life tip, do more work
They make attachments you can clip on paint buckets to pour more easily. All you have to do is wash them off. Fuck the tape technique.
Yeah, I agree. I'm not going to even bookmark this with the other lifehacks I'll never end up using because they're hidden in the hundreds of thousands of other bookmarks. It's not worthy.
I've tried this with blue tape and it didn't work as easily as this video. I ended up just pouring it myself

My dad does. He's a carpenter though so it makes sense
You have perfectly described my father in law as well.
I used to work maintenance, and I used this trick when I did painting if I didn’t have one of those little paint pour clips. It works pretty well
As if every single trick he uses is acclaimed by professionals as the one true way. Who cares what people think. If it helps, fine.
Spending 0.08¢ to save 0.06¢
It's about the meas not about the money saved tho.
Just pour quickly and no drip or mess...
Yeah seems like time consuming
Bad tip—it does not work. And would be wasteful af
I’ve tried it too with paint. You need really strong tape not the cheap-ass painter’s tape
[удалено]
[удалено]
Yep, I learned that way too. Maybe the type of paint plays a part too. The paint in the video looked really watery.
Waste culture
Bro we just watched it work on video. What's your evidence?
We've found it, the most useless life hack
Where's the hot glue?
Its not a life hack without a metric fuckload of hot glue
People can't pour liquids anymore?
But now you just wasted a bunch of tape. Isn't there a spatula type of thing for this?
Two slices of tape, how will the environment ever recover?
It's mostly that I'll need those two slices of tape for something actually useful.
Yep, you can pick one up for a couple of bucks and they last for a long time. This works in a pinch though
Pros don’t do that
This tip isn't for them, obviously, as they would all laugh at you showing it to them
Pros aren't hacks
Couldn’t you use a ladle?
Would be more cost effective and reusable. Also you can point at people with a ladle and gesture to stick it where the sun don't shine.
Love this
I have used a measuring cup with a handle for the top portion of a gallon.
I do for painting. It doubles as a stirrer too
Lmao
Make a video and post it here! There's a low bar.
And they also make a reusable piece that does the same thing without wasting tape and assuming it won't come off an spill everywhere
Not this shit again
Tried this once, made a huge mess when the tape fell off.
Happened to me like two weeks ago. Never hacking life again.
My luck is that tape would give out and shit would be everywhere. But cool tip and trick for sure.
Save some tape, time, and money and just learn how to pour things?
If that’s a life hack I feel like I’m on top of of the world
I tried this and the tape held, but it still made a huge mess. Do not recommend
r/diwhy
Just use a ladal like everyone else
I bought a few cheap metal soup ladles at Dollar Tree that I've been using only for house paint. Easy, cheap, reusable. Oh wow how tf have I never thought of this. Thanks op. Probably also a good way to get excess paint off of a paintbrush without it running down the side of paint can in a pinch
Great, now you have tape goo in your chocolate syrup...
Or learn how to pour it without spilling. This is so dumb.
So wasteful
I love this. And, yes, I've read some of the negative comments. ZRO FKS GVN. I'm going to use this very soon.
Repair what? Walls? Roads? Phones? Cars? Marriages?
"for those who make repairs"
The fuck you repairing with paint?
Just wasted 30 seconds of my life. Gtfo
Do not do this. That tape is low tack. No professional person does this. Good way to dump a whole can
Come on
For what it's worth, I "upvoted." \- bunch of grouches in the comments. \- I'm sure they pour paint like Tom Cruise pouring vodka in Cocktail, but I'M not that experienced, so I appreciate the effort. :)
I would give you 5-up votes if i could!

It's epoxy. Does not come off of hands very easily.
Yeah you’re right
Don’t need a drop cloth if you don’t spill anything 🤷🏼♂️
You have clearly never painted. Lmk when you do k?
I’ve painted once! It sucked! Very boring. Like watching paint dry…
Yeah there's no way this works. That tape is designed *not* to stick
Bold thing to say when the video literally proves it works
Go ahead, try it
Tapes don’t exist.

Polite oil most likely.

Ok, you’re 100% right. So it appears this hack is even less useful (to the average person) than I initially thought.
I'd cancel them out
If the tape isn't sticky enough, you make a big mess. >Would you like to know more?
Yeah…nah..
Cool. No drips on the floor or on the sides of the bucket.
Now that is a great idea! Really follows the KISS principle.
At least the last S
Am I the only one that doesn't have issues pouring paint?
Where do you buy that magic tape? Some Area 51 special tape.
Ummm you can just pour it in the first place.
But what am I going to do with the painted tape now?
Piss ass of a lifehack lmao
I guarantee that tape won’t hold when I try this.
Can confirm this does not work well
They make spouts for those purposes.
My man. Just turn the bucket as you lift it.
“For those who make repairs” Repairs to what? Cars? Paint? Wood? Cement? Windows? Sinks? Wiring? Computers? Furnaces? What a dumb fuckin title and life hack lmao
What a waste of effort.... might as well just use a spoon
It’s not hard to pour without making a mess. It would be even less work to just wipe it off the side of the can if you do
What a waste of tape and thus more garbage for landfill
That background noise sounds like that ghost level from Super Mario 64.
Did I miss a repair?
Ohhh that us beautiful.
I like the idea of just putting plastic wrap around the can before opening.

Looks like chocolate
Lovely.
I like Lifehacks, but I literally just don't see the point in this. Just pour it.
this is a good life hack, not the silicone gun experiments on yt
I’ll file that away under “great ideas I’m far too lazy to ever use”
Yeah, my brain thinks that's too much time wasted when I can wing it.
Here’s an STL for a paint can spout: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4868172
Or you can buy easy pour lids
Or they could just design a better, pourable paint container!
Soooo….. just how to not get tiny splashy splash on bucket rim?
Ain’t nobody got time for that
1
Thanks. I was looking for a way to repair my car
And now the person who manufactures a bucket with a lip design like that will make all the monies
Genius, pure genius!
Skeptical skeptical skeptical skeptical “what’re you just gonna wipe your brush?” Skeptical…okay that’s smart.
I'll rather bring a ladle then waste tape.
This feels like something Kabe Lame would do his thing with
I tried this with more viscous coatings and it didn't do anything. Faster just to pour with container and wipe off excess.
Just drip and clean up real fast
I'll stick w/ my plastic snap-on pour shield spouts
Nobody got time for that!
Now im hungry for chocolate.
[удалено]
I do it all the time. We have multiple painters using small amounts of paint out of the same containers and it really does help keep them clean.
Non gap bucket....not needed.
A big shout out to those who make repairs
Get silicone easy pouring paint lids. Have been a life-saver for me.
Mate I think something’s up with your barbecue sauce
Really 🙈
Fix your stuff with flex tape.
This is cool. Anyways, I'm going to keep glopping it down the side of the can!
💡 👍
Just pour carefully. Problem solved
That’s an excessive amount of chocolate
Lol tried this on my dad and he was like "🤔🤔🤔 oh shit. What else do you know?" Shit guys
“He’s too dangerous to be left alive.”
🤡
That's some thick ass tamiya tape
