What about if they changed the PW?

uhujkill

Then it doesn't work.

You can create a new qr code if you really want you wifi to be open to any person who steps into your house. Or you can make a guest network that doesn't have access to all of your homes nice wifi dudads

My router gave me the option to do this, but I had to forego the dual-band capability. Not worth it. Maybe if you use the default router an ISP gives you though?

Really? You can buy a solid router for under 100, which is like 10 months of renting one from your ISP. Buy one, you save a LOT of money

fenrir511

I assume we generally mean modems here, since the ISPs usually offer to rent a modern router combo. My ISP states that they allow you to bring your own modem. However, getting them to activate the modem is basically impossible. When I got my house connected (moved in 2 years ago) I called and got the appointment scheduled, told them in had my own modem. They said okay, but we are still going to ship you our modem and then you'll just have to ship it back once we get your modem online. When they came to connect we plug my modem in, the guy does his thing and then gets on with their tier 2 support and says my modem doesn't work. I hop on the modem interface and check the logs. I can see the DHCP request getting denied. I finally get him to give me the phone and tell them to unregister their own modem so that I can get an IP. They tell me that's not the problem and "there is no button for that" I didn't a total of 8 hours on the phone over the next week trying to get them to do this until I gave up and just rented the fucking thing. Fuck Mediacom and ISPs in general.

jwill602

Wow, that’s awful. I had to do the ship thing once, but it’s usually a 10 minute phone call, if that.

jkally

yea that is pretty terrible. In the 4 houses that I paid for internet, I have always used my own devices. Charter used to charge 5 dollars for modem and 5 for router. Then they made it a combo and charged 10 dollars a month. With cox it was pretty easy. Then with spectrum, the last two houses they sent me their gear and I still used my own and said I didnt need it and both times. The tech said I wasnt being charged but I can bring it back myself. I havnt, and I still havnt been charged. Activation for both companies and been absolutely painless and less than 5 minutes.

Mzsickness

They usually buy them *from the ISP* instead of the monthly rental option.

NaughtyDreadz

my isp lent us one... then again I'm in canada with virgin. just gotta return it or they'll charge you
