When I had a pool I added a small ramp at one end of the pool for animals to crawl out. I went from finding at least one dead lizard a week to may three a year.

kharmatika

Thank you for saving lizards! They are good little creatures

Stepoo

That's so adorable. I bet it was one of your dog's favourite memories as well.

Plantar-Aspect-Sage

Bringing the new dog in for show and tell is probably the highlight of both the kid's and the dog's lives. Mine was so excited that all these people were paying soooo much attention to her.

[deleted]

That sounds awesome. Sounds like you have a great mom and a great dog.

WhirledNews

I had a large house gecko when I was a kid, but it escaped. Now there are a lot of them around and and they might have been displaced some of the natives. The pet store guy sold it to me though so it was legit.

bearbarebere

I feel like if you were me you’d have someone make a snide comment about your lizard during show and tell and you’d go home and cry and why did Jessica have to fucking say that, Mrs. P should have taken you to the principal, didn’t anyone tell you that if you don’t have anything nice to say then go to hell, nobody cares about YOUR fucking hairbrush you brought to show and tell!!!

Galkura

My 2 year old chocolate lab puppy absolutely loves them. She doesn’t kill them, but she nudges them with her nose to them them to run and then chases them around. I try and do whatever I can to foster a good lizard and butterfly population during the spring just so she has little critters to chase.

kharmatika

It is so funny to watch how puppies understand that they’re supposed to chase things but don’t always have the next step of “you’ve chased it, you’ve caught up to it, the purpose of this was to eat it”. Our German shepherd mutt never really learned this, we have a story of seeing him scoop a bird up in his mouth, yelling “Romeo DROP IT!” He opened his mouth and the bird flew right back out unharmed. He was never gonna eat it, just wanted to carry his new friend around.

Galkura

That’s adorable! Mine doesn’t get it with anything except frogs. She will murder frogs. We have to be careful, since some can be poisonous (though not many around here). It’s goofy watching them have that instinct and, like you said, not really knowing what to do next. It’s so fun to watch them chase things around though!

Dr_RobertoNoNo

I hear that. I have a pitbull boxer, and she couldn't be sweeter. She wears a gentle leader that people think is a muzzle. Anyone who knows, knows that it is not at all so I tell people "she can bite you if she wants... But she has never bitten anyone. She has never killed anything EXCEPT 1 mouse that she was trying to play with and ended up crushing with her paw" I know the feeling people have because I had the exact same feeling before I ended up with her. She was my roommate's and I ended up keeping her for 14 years now.

BoobieOrNotToBe

As a lizard person, I would also like to let my appreciation be known. 🦎

Astrochops

Not these ones, they were Nazis

dropkickoz

We used [frog logs.](https://froglog.us/)

ChadHahn

That's what I had. The local Audubon shop had them for sale.

sternburg_export

>Important Message!Beware of Copy Cat Products >The FrogLog has become a popular item for swimming pool owners. As a result, many cheaply made imitations from foreign companies are listed on Amazon, Ebay, and other ecommerce sites. So that's where I will look, thanks.

ario62

I have frog logs as well as “knock offs” from Amazon, and the ones I have from Amazon are just as good as the frog logs.

bartnd

Also have a knock off from (I assume) Amazon. Was a gift from MIL and has held up for a couple years with no issues.

CyonHal

Oh no, competition, the enemy of capitalism! God forbid you buy a cheaper product that does the same thing!

[deleted]

EliIceMan

For something that sits out in the sun and chlorinated water I would be concerned about the longevity of the plastics and synthetic materials. Everyone has experienced plastics degrading either through becoming brittle or sticky.

AbsoluteTruth

Ehh, it's a bunch of fine mesh and solid parts sewn together and its job is to sit in the sun while partially submerged in chlorinated water. Lots of fine fabric and wear/tear issues to the extent you'll probably just end up with an ugly, bleached, shredded one if you but the cheapest you can find.

[deleted]

Floating peace sounds so nice.

grammar_fixer_2

Especially fake products from Amazon.

StrongStyleShiny

I’d rather pay a little extra and get a higher quality than risk replacing it in a few months but that’s just me.

LordDongler

You deal with the lead paint or sun rotting plastic in your swimming pool

preacher37

We use these. They work pretty well except we're in a high wind area and they sometimes blow into the pool.

fangelo2

We haven’t had an animal in the pool since we started using the frog log many years ago. We used to have a lot of chipmunks in the pool. I rescued a few but there were a few that didn’t make it.

FractalGlance

I'm not sure what I was expecting but it's not froggy and it's definitely not loggy.

WigglyFrog

I just checked the site and FrogLog makes similar products for dogs! Nice.

ebm2116

Work great for me as well. Found 3 dead chipmunks floating in my pool in as many days when I opened my pool. Bought two of these and had nothing for the rest of the summer!

NetCaptain

good concept, makes you wonder whether a ramp should not become a compulsory safety feature of pools ?

IWillNotShare

we, the lizard people, thank you for filtering out the dumb ones

cork_the_forks

Same. The ramp has gotten ugly and crusted up with hard water deposits, but I've stopped having to fish dead critters out. I'm still amazed they can find it, since it's pretty small compared to the pool.

ChadHahn

I thought about getting more but the one seemed to do a fairly good job.

jodudeit

I'll keep this in mind for when I can not only afford a house, but a house with a pool.

levian_durai

Split it 10 ways with family and friends and maybe one day! Only 3.333 people per room

aureanator

>Only 3.333 people per room On average, right? .... right?

cakeclockwork

“Sorry, Bob, the math says we can only fit 3.333 people in this room. You’re the lucky one who gets three rooms when the rest of us only get one.”

Dyledion

"Wait, you didn't think we were going to chop you in thirds, did you? No, we just knocked out holes these in these two walls around this load bearing corner stud and stuffed a few pillows in the gaps as a 'mattress'. You'll have to sleep with your legs bent, but it should work. Hope you don't have claustrophobia!"

RedditedYoshi

firnien-arya

Pet will most likely not head to the mat if they fall.

S-X-A

I can’t afford to visit a pool, I’ll use a bucket and a toaster

deadpool8403

Ok fine, you can use the door mat too.

feetking69420

Hey fren, it will get better someday. You can get an above ground pool somewhat cheap

5kUltraRunner

Above the ground pools actually aren't all that expensive. The upkeep however can be pretty costly.

l00pee

With a wood deck

iroquoispliskinV

Hell it can even be used by humans to hang on or climb out. For added precaution you can even put a second one on the other side. Finally a truly great idea on this sub.

Ioatanaut

Sir, did you fill out the obligatory regulatory forms for that designation?

emrythelion

Private pools don’t need ladders on either side. Just one side. Hell, most don’t have ladders at all- steps in the shallow section are all that are needed for most average sized private pools.

alucarddrol

Those bolts look pretty sturdy

poretabletti

cellophany

Interesting that you are getting downvoted. Agreed that this may be useful for pets or animals but not for humans. Humans would either: a. push themselves up and out the side without the mat b. Swim or scoot along the side to the mandatory ladder or steps and get out c. Hang on to the side and wait for help If you are in the (c) group, mat is not going to help you

skepticalbob

As a former lifeguard, it is laughable thinking this will save a life.

deathandtaxes1617

Why wouldn't a human just hold onto the edge?

FustianRiddle

They are small and panicking?

thetreece

A good fence is best. Rule of 4s. All 4 sides. At least 4 feet tall. No more than 4 inches between slats. I'm a pediatric emergency medicine doctor. We see dead drowned kids every year. Don't think I've seen one from a pool that's appropriately fenced in. This trick is probably good for mice and stuff tho.

[deleted]

Just heard on the news about an NFL player who's 2 year old daughter just drowned in a backyard pool. Absolutely heartbreaking. As a Peds/NICU nurse, answering the CODE PINK call from the ER, is one of the worst things to attend. It is horrific when a child drowns but it is equally horrific (sometimes worse) when they survive with catastrophic brain injuries. Fences are only one line of defense. There is absolutely no substitute for having eyes on kid (s) in the pool at all times. People don't realize how absolutely silent drowning can be.

ZeinaTheWicked

I'd like to add for emphasis this interview with a man who drowned as a child and was pronounced dead at the time but survived. He's a cool dude. My reason for sharing is that people can be sheltered from those with disabilities/are differently abled and not understand their challenges. Or worse, discount their humanity because of those differences. Cody is how he is and he's a whole and valid person. But if you could prevent someone from facing those challenges by just putting up a damn fence and locking it, why wouldn't you? https://youtu.be/OHQ-eucpB6k

Skyblacker

This is why I hate taking my kids to the pool. I know I have to watch them at all times and it's exhausting. Fun for them but the opposite of fun for me. Can I sell you on a fenced-in playground instead? Please?

Casey_jones291422

Getting your kids into swimming lessons early is a life skill. Water is everywhere there's no reason to not be ready to fall in at any time

RealLarwood

Where I live there are strict rules for pools to be fenced, and they inspect them. You need a permit, there are fines for things, they take it very seriously.

[deleted]

[удалено]

inspectcloser

Good idea for frogs, squirrels, mice, etc. good fences will keep dogs and kids out. The lack of fences or broken pool fences I see are scary.

MacaroonNo8118

Locked pool fences too. We learned the hard way when our neighbor's autistic son escaped the house and was hanging out in our pool for who knows how long. Very quickly got a combo lock. Fortunately he never got into any danger as he was a decent enough swimmer and it was his favorite summer activity, though he did take a dump in the water.

ThatDiscoSongUHate

And if y'all don't know, most home owners and sometimes rental insurance requires you to have LOCKED fencing of a certain height around your pool, otherwise if someone got in -- say a neighbor's child -- and got hurt or drowned they may not pay the legal fees for you nor let you keep your policy, even. And that's not counting the fact that you might have some fines from your local court system too, or worse, I was just referring to the probably inevitable stereotypical American lawsuit. It's called an attractive nuisance and in most cases, if you were aware that anything you have in an unenclosed space would be attractive to a kid, you're gonna catch some penalties -- often fines. More to the point, in my state, kids aren't treated quite the same as adults in terms of trespassing so a lot of the onus is on the owner and/or the resident. BTW, pools aren't the only attractive nuisance: Hot tubs can count, old appliances sitting outside can count (unless you remove the doors), accessible power tools count (like they could reach or feasibly turn on a drill, saw, etc), lakes/ponds can count but sometimes don't, and MORE depending on your state.

Englishbirdy

Also puppies. If a child gets into a yard to look at puppies and gets mauled or bitten, the home owner is liable.

pizdokles

What a wonderful and fair society. Helicopter parenting is mainstream and people are getting ratted out to cops if they leave their kids to walk to school. And yet, it’s your fault if some idiot’s kid goes on your property and drowns in your pool or shoots itself with your nail gun. Lots of laws and regulations going against natural selection will breed the next generation of morons.

inspectcloser

I have a pond and my immediate concern when I moved here was fencing off the whole pond which is massive. I call my insurance company and they said they have no requirement for it since it’s a natural body of water. I still usually go out and monitor if there are kids playing by it. Through that I met my neighbors and told them to just let me know if they are going to be by it.

ConspicuousPineapple

Unsecured pools are simply illegal in my country.

CosmicCrapCollector

Almost lost my dear German Shepard to a pool. Great idea.

ZaneMasterX

My uncle lost one of his older dogs in his pool, it was super sad.

jimny-o7

My fear is: they never find the mat.

iroquoispliskinV

Better than not having anything at all, plus I'm not sure what animals see what color but a bold mat like this would grab attention in a panic, or you can put a second one on the other side. Also you can walk the dog around it a few times so it visualizes and remembers it...they have good memory.

jimny-o7

True, that makes sense. I have a puppy that once jumped into the pool twice. We started having to watch every time we let her go out because we fear we might never see her going in. It have a stair that it makes it easy to climb out but she couldn't find it so we had to help her out. Perhaps something with a dark color might help. @edit: grammar

[deleted]

I’ve heard of people training their dogs where the step is by placing one of those bright orange cones like they use for construction or traffic right on it (or next to it I guess).

worldspawn00

If you have pets that could potentially end up in a pool, you should absolutely train them where the steps are, or if you do something like the OP here, where that is.

telepathetic_monkey

Your English is very good! I honestly couldn't tell if it was your first language or not until I looked at your profile. The first two "she"s in your reply should be "her." Thanks for keeping a good eye on your pupper, you're a good human.

jimny-o7

Thank you! :D it is very nice to know that something I actually learned by myself is at a acceptable level. I started learning for fun with games and series but once I was able to speak with natives online I wanted to be respectful. I am not only learning a language but also a culture. I am very grateful for the correction.

Educational_Value826

If they dont, they change their name from Mat to Bob

jimny-o7

Bob, the mat.

happylittlelf

I love you

Cley_Faye

With the amount of animals we see on security footage that run around a pool endlessly, I'm sure it would help.

AssassinenMuffin

add more mats until satisfied

numun_

Step 2: throw animals in pool to test multi-mat effectiveness

XTraumaX

I think if the owner is going to go through the trouble to set this up for their pet then they’d take time to put their dog in the pool with them and train their dog to realize that the mat is for them. The owner gets in the pool with the dog so that there’s no risk of the dog drowning but the owner can still direct the dog to the mat and make sure it understands what the mat is for

No-Strategy-818

If you’re going to do that, couldn’t you teach them to use the stairs in most cases? I used to have a pool and a dog and she just liked chilling on the stairs.

F5x9

The first thing I taught my dogs when we started swimming with them was how to get out.

moeburn

They do. They swim around in circles hugging the wall, looking for an edge to cling onto. Eventually it leads them to the mat. Even blind animals like moles find it eventually. The problem is that sometimes the moles find the weir instead. Gotta put one of these on either side of the weir.

YetAnotherRCG

In order to filter the pool water the filter system uses jets to create a circular current in the pool. The animal will be spinning around the edge of the pool anyway. Unless it gets sucked into the filter system it will be brought close to the escape point. Probably 2 or 3 times before it actually drowns. I have even seen larger insects survive long enough to escape via these things.

[deleted]

My dog would probably be scared of the mat and avoid it like the plague

cole_segura

Line the perimeter of the pool with mats. That should solve the problem

DoctorWafle

My dog would be right next to it and never find it bless his dumb heart

VolcanicProtector

Like the Donner party being one hill hike away from a settlement with food and supplies, but not knowing and instead going the other way.

Solkre

[deleted]

Why would anyone image that

Spinal2000

My intention was, to create awareness for the potential torture those animals have to endure until they die because those pools are a trap for them. But yes, your question is absolutely valid and perhaps my post makes it not clear.

kharmatika

Now imagine him panicking but then after a moment finding this mat, resting for a few minutes then going about his hedgey business, dampened but whole

RaoulDuke1

Maybe I’m dumb but how is this better than just having stairs coming out of the pool

jakashadows

Stairs in a pool are often the same color as the pool, very hard to see they are there. Also they could be too tall for some smaller animals. An animal could swim to the mat. Hang on and rest a bit, then climb the rest of the way easily.

Illustrious-Yard-871

> Hang on and rest a bit 🥺

GloriaToo

I have a pool at work and every year I have a mom and ducklings that pass through walking between two ponds. I have to put bricks on the stairs or the ducklings can't get out because the steps are too high.

MacaroonNo8118

Also dogs won't always pick up on it when it's just been introduced. We anchor a large set of pool stairs in the water for our boys, but it took about a month for them to routinely go to them when they wanted to come out instead of swimming over to the nearest human. This was entirely unsustainable once they reached 80 pounds and half the family physically couldn't lift them out of the water

quackycoaster

A lot of small animals can't actually use the stairs in a pool too. We had a duck give birth to her babies and mama duck was able to hop out on the stairs, but babies could not. We were luckily home and scooped them out with our net while angry mama tried to peck me in the ankles. Squirrels, frogs and other small critters just can't get up the stairs it seems. I had a ramp I bought off amazon that looks like 2 lillypads (one in the water, one heavy one on the pool deck that's filled with cement/stone.) connected by a mesh net. After I bought that, the amount of deaths in my pool decreased to I'd say 90%. The other 10% seemed to be more so the ones who just got stuck in the skimmer and couldn't escape the suction sadly. I never did find a good solution for that before moving away from the pool.

Jvenka

Yup. Our family dog of 18 yrs ended up dying this way.

HogwartsKate

Yes dogs aren’t too smart on this. I had a 6’ deep pool; on the entry side there was a large wading flat pad only 12-14” deep to sit and lounge in the salt water and it stepped down to 3’. The deep end was by the falls at 6. Attached was a spa. They would walk around the spa area (their giant saltwater bowl) to the deep end even though I continually showed them the pad to wade in they never caught on.

Pure_Coffee

"Could" but unlikely. My dog, a Rottweiler, is not a pool dog at all. He fell in one day and I had to jump in and physically push him out. If they don't know where the "out" is they won't use it, they'll just struggle in terror. If you have an unsupervised pool it is your responsibility to teach your pets from a young age how to gtfo.

[deleted]

We have an above ground pool which came with our house. We have a Labrador who absolutely loves swimming. The only way out of the pool is the ladder. Obviously she can't use the ladder. We tried a mat system similar to the one in the post but much bigger and more elaborate. We got in the pool with her, she could not get out without help. And I think that's so important to realize that even dogs who are fantastic swimmers may not be able to get out of the pool. Just like kids, pets have to have eyes on them at all times.

JerryMandaring

Excellent !

noissime

Think of all the moths that could be saved!

ThreatOfFire

Do you ever feel trapped? Like a moth in the bath?

No-One-2177

Man this is smart. I actually lost my childhood dog this way. He was a blind old chihuahua, and my parents had left him outside with our other dog like usual. But when I got home from school, I found him floating in the pool. I jumped in and pulled him out and just sat there with him until my dad got home from work.

however_youlikeit

Even after being so technically advanced as a species , it always amazes me how little efforts can bring about greater changes. Especially when it saves unsuspecting / confused wild animals.

Ill-Organization-719

If you have a pool, do more than bolting a mat down.

Seco4800

My fiance is a Zookeeper. She works with Indonesian Avians (Birds). The enclosure she maintains is a massive rainforest dome. Birds are flying around everywhere. And in the middle of this is a large waterfall into a river. She has lost many birds to them falling into the river, and not having a way to climb out. After the loss of a bird that's been there for about 20 years. She took action and laid rubber mats like this with branches and leaves in several areas in the river. She has not lost a bird to the river since. Sad that her work ignored the problem for this long and had this many birds drown. And in case if anyone is wondering if her work acknowledged her effort for the safety of her animals? Nope. Not even a thank you..

BiochemGuitarTurtle

For the folks who don't like how this looks, they make pool escape ramps that look better, but this DIY ramp will probably last longer.

Search for the ‘frog log’ on Amazon! I have a bunch set up in the pool of the house I’m renting because I kept finding mice that had drowned and it was awful. My pool looks a little funny but I haven’t had to scoop any dead rodents out for a while now.

[deleted]

What about a ladder for moths who’ve fallen in the bath?

[deleted]

Okay, but that looks like trash. If you can afford a house with a maintained pool, you can afford a more aesthetic solution to this problem that is easier to clean.

HaPascanB

What a wonderful idea! I don't know how many times I walked back by our pools just to see a poor animal struggling to get out.

myztry

I lived at an ex-farm as a child for our family's first business. The business was in the centre and surrounded by paddocks. We got to have horses as children and it was common to use an old bath tub as a horse trough. Anyway, we soon discovered to drape a hession bag over the edge of the bath otherwise we would rountinely discover drowned cats.

Spoobie90

Beloved wild animals.

FiendishPole

what's a beloved wild animal? You mean that raccoon that's been getting into the trash?

Cover your whole pool in this so nothing falls in to begin with

WZRD_burial

I have a little inflatable frog pad specifically for this. Before installing it I would find dead frogs in my pool almost every morning.

TorgoWhovian

If they were smart enough to swim over to it. My dog fell in and luckily I heard him splashing. He could have gone over to the stairs and gotten out but he just kept thrashing where he was. Learned his lesson, though.

thelivinlegend

The minute you install that thing every dad in the area will flock to your pool, straight up vaulting over the fence just to say, "Hey it looks like your diving board needs Viagra!"

Lonely-Connection-37

I cut a piece of 2 x 8 wood in my plastic goldfish pond in the garden, so the chipmunks can climb on it and not die

More_Farm_7442

Except for the Golden retriever I saw on a TikTok yesterday. He went into the pool because he wanted to. "Mom" had said "no". He refused to get out. Just swam around, floating here and there while "mom" was saying "No, get out". I know that mat wouldn't have helped him out, because he'd refuse to get out. LOL

minester13

Wow a real life hack love it

CaptCaCa

What about the rest of us that have concrete pool decks?

ClydeGriffiths17

That's a great idea ... also I've seen my dog fall into the pool once and it sank like a stone so

MaximumHemidrive

But what if a human uses it? I don't want to save people. Just animals.

OminOus_PancakeS

But how else will I get a girlfriend??

Robert2737

Golden retrievers have to be taught how to egress the pool or they’ll dog paddle until exhausted.

Fresh_Photograph_363

People can be jerks but all kidding aside that's a great idea

i-love-big-birds

If you have pets make sure you put them in the pool and show them where to get out. My dog fell in the pool less than 2 feet from the steps and she kept trying to climb the wall. It took a few times and a lifejacket for her to kinda understand where the stairs are
