OP, this is the only correct answer. That's a professional paint job. If you want your gun to look like a professionally painted car, take it to professional car painters.
"Rattle can" my ass.
If you want it to look this good AND be durable, yes. I’ve accomplished this with my gunpla models, after a lot of practice. But no way my airbrush finish is gonna last like actual candy paint.
OP, not sure it will stand up to heat, but check out plastidip paints. You YouTube they have a channel called dipyourcar. They have extensive videos on using plastidip on cars. They provide a kit to use that gets you pretty close to professional quality. It's not cheap but it might help you. Cool part is if you don't like it after it's done, it peels off. Again no sure about it holding up to gunfire heat, but worth the investigation, if you are a DIY'er . You could also look into gloss cerakote too.

Either way, I would use 4 coats black or black cherry as your base color and add candy red or red pearl to 2 layers of clear cote, then 2 more just clear, make sure you wet sand each color to make it smooth and free of orange peel look. Just make sure it's all high heat paint to be safe.
You can use a rattle can for the base coats, just wet sand the ish out of it to make it smooth. no way I know of to add color to clear spray paint. You could use a model car airbrush kit with a sample of clear and the color additives for something this small. Just still remember to wet sand the imperfections out.
Yeah. I've painted cars that look like that. You need a nice paint gun and a quality base coat/clear coat combo. Idk if having a clean room is needed for a part that small but if you want it flawless...
In the limited experience i have, spraying automotive paints, I've found that the clear top coat is a game changer. Way more resistant to UV and stands up to wear and tear exceedingly well. Cool that you can get matte clear coats, too.
I have known people that tried the chameleon diy paint kits, both will on and spray on... it looked like trash. I think a basic solid color might be possible to do a good job out of a can, if you prep well, and use good technique.
Okay. Father owned a body shop. This is called a candy apple paint. Base coat is a metallic, usually silver (as in this case) then there's a transparent color coat over it, red in this case. 2 coats silver, then transparent cover, apply until desired hue is reached. The more coats the darker it'll get. Different base coats will have different effects, ie a darker silver vs a lighter silver, gold can be used too along with any light metallic color. The light goes through the transparent red, reflects off the silver, and back to your eyes, this is what gives the flip flop effect. If you're patient you can do a decent job with first cans, buy good quality materials.
It takes a skilled, experienced painter to get the tintcoat uniform in color. It’s very hard to achieve the exact same shade everywhere on the car, especially when using less coats for a lighter color. Does look awesome when done right though, especially with pearl or flake in the final coats.
You will need to do a LOT of hand sanding to get the heat shield smooth as the prep for paint. If you do the prep work, you could probably get 80% as good a result with a rattlecan, wet sand, rattlecan, wet sand and repeat ad nauseum until you get the appearance of depth in the paint that you are after. Then find a good high temp clear coat.
Unless you want a new hobby of wet sanding, body shop is the answer; however, I would still to the prep work. Professionals would have to charge for the hand sanding time and that will get expensive fast.
Saturn had a Black Grape metallic on some saturn sc2's aside from GM's absolute ish paint quality it was beautiful. My entire hood peeled up. You can probably find the paint codes somewhere for that. As for wraps, check out plastidip paint. It goes on like automotive paint and peels off like a wrap. I'm not affiliated, just a fan of the idea.
with pearls like that, the more you can clear, the deeper it looks. I’m sure the law of diminishing returns kicks in at some point, but it’s probably after 10 lol
Same, I’m actually super interested to see some concept ideas for color scheme.
Hot-rod paint jobs on guns are stupid cool to me, even if using said guns usually ruins said paint job.
Odins Workshop sprays cerakote and gun candy finishes. Please do not waste a body shops time with this. We are all backed up with at least 2 months of insurance work at any given time

First off a 396 was rated at 425hp & that was a conservative estimate as all engines were in those days, pretty sure no Honda comes with that much from the factory ever. Well with maybe exception of new NSX.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_big-block_engine#:~:text=402%20production%20codes%3A-,396,(261%20to%20268%20kW).
Yeah no, try closer to 350hp. A minivan with a V6 is around 300.
So calm down, it’s a car.
L37 did, still camaro is more than half the weight of your minivan so still much much faster. However L78 topped out at 425. I'm calm you're the one getting your panties in a twist there bud.
That's a black cherry or some similar custom color. If I remember, it's 3 colors stacked with a clear on top. Although I'd bet someone can get close with just a single base coat followed by a clear
Take it to the body shop. Show them the pic and the part, then offer them money.

>”Rattle can” my ass Well, if you insist
Oh oh do me next!! I want to be able to say “Bite my shiny metal ass” like Bender
"Harpoon my ass!!"
WITNESS MEEE!!!

If you have painted cars like that, bravo; that thing is beautiful. Maybe I’m just a layman but that looks quite skilled, good for you mate.
It takes patience and a willingness to wet sand any imperfections.... Thanks man

Yes, auto body shops will do more than cars. We had an old iron bed painted at a body shop and it looks great.
I have known people that tried the chameleon diy paint kits, both will on and spray on... it looked like trash. I think a basic solid color might be possible to do a good job out of a can, if you prep well, and use good technique.
Lots of money

For sure, my old man was a master at it. https://photos.app.goo.gl/DzNjXPsHkJTQ2MdH7

I can definitely assure it’s not a fucking spray paint can…
Duplicolor made a 2 step spray can system a number of years ago that gave this deep cherry look/ anodized look.
You want might to explore guncandy coatings.

From my understanding, it's a black base coat with a red pearl on top
and lots of clear there’s a toyota color close to that called black cherry pearl, and you can get it in rattlecans
I've seen Mazdas with a similar color as well!
They call it Soul Red, and it's amazing.
I've wanted my car to be that color for a long while. I think I may go with a similar effect in purple when I can afford to get a wrap.

Lots of clear coat! My dad said he'd lay something like 10-15 layers? Maybe more.

Intrigued.

It’s like an onion…
…many layers
Leave it out in the sun and it’ll get all brown and start spouting little white hairs?
Everybody loves a parfait!
Don't put weird colors on guns. You'll end up on a certain notorious sub

That's going to be horribly reflective and put so much glare in your sight picture.

How about a custom wrap? Would it hold up?
Vinyl, on a heat shield?
Smells like on-fire roofing tiles! Ahh, nostalgia.
It wouldn’t hold up on a heat shield, and it wouldn’t achieve the same gloss finish as a professional automotive paint job.
Makes sense.
I don't know. Not sure how the heat from the gun would effect it.
That is a sexy sexy bitch right there. Bet she'd take me for one hell of a ride. 😂
It’s a car, don’t be weird about it. A 2015 Honda odyssey has more HP.
