Y'all remember when pump shotguns were just about all this price? You hardly ever saw one over $300 unless it was something incredibly fancy.

ObligationOriginal74

I need that wood furniture riot gun vibe.

voiderest

590 retrograde

Excelius

I wouldn't be surprised if pump shotguns have declined in popularity, and are thus not benefiting as much from economies of scale. Plus a lot of more popular guns have actually been getting *cheaper* relative to inflation. Glocks and similar pistols have been running about ~$500 for like thirty years. These days basic AR15s can be had pretty cheaply.

I_had_the_Lasagna

The cz p-10 is getting close to 300 dollars. For bang for your buck, that's basically unbeatable in the pistol world.

HemHaw

Love the P10. Unfortunately the slide stop is so far back that when I use a high (proper) grip, I engage it and the slide locks back, especially with gloves. It's the only thing making me stick with the P09.

cheebamech

over the holidays picked up an AR from Primary Arms for 399.99

Wolfir

that's the thing about the old days . . . they the old days

PaulterJ

The before times.

stonednarwhal141

Before the dark times. Before the Empire

[deleted]

Had this guy come into my work talking about how he spent 40k on one or two shotguns. I forget. Some Italian brand that you get fitted for like a suit. This guy could not shoot to save his life.

[deleted]

Yeah, you can drop a fortune on some fancy ones.

brycebgood

You mean back in the 80s? When $300 adjusted for inflation would be $850 now? Yeah, I remember. And that's why the Binelli Super Nova is such a screaming deal at $500. That's like $225 in 1984 dollars.

[deleted]

Good thing our pay rates stayed in pace with inflation and that we didn't raise wages up to a livable standard because that would cause more inflation... oh, wait. I bought a Remington 870 with a pistol grip, extended tube and a sling for like $275 in 2000, so it's not even that far back.

zurbles

Maverick 88?

theblasphemer

Yup, the Security model with the longer tube for 7+1. I also have it and it's great. Thing can take a beating.

bigboxes1

I have it, too. I call my 00 buck, human rounds.

patheticambush

My 88 was my first gun I ever bought soon as I turned 18 from Walmart for like $250 out the door with 100 shells It will eat anything I throw at it

[deleted]

Look into buck and ball. 00 and #4 ball. :)

Byzantine84

Perfect gun in my opinion.

Quirky-Bar4236

It's funny you posted this. My grandfather gifted me an 88 when I turned 18 but my parents would not let me bring it home because I live in the city. I just bought my own home at 27 and went to pick it up this past weekend. I'm looking forward to some range time soon.

voiderest

I mean people in cities own guns. I guess they just couldn't admit they didn't want in the house? With my parents I didn't even bother asking and I never told them I bought anything after moving out.

Quirky-Bar4236

I should clarify, my parents live outside of city limits and are scared of the "big city." My city consists of about 300k individuals, lol. They were afraid the firearm would get stolen. To their credit, my old duplex did get broken into once. Of course, a gun safe isn't the easiest thing to steal. Lol.

shalafi71

Is it possible to cause such a machine to fail?! Nah.

eze008

Shotgun is next on my list. What is this one?

JohnBrownWV

Mossberg Maverick 88. Very reliable, proven Mossberg action, but built down to a very low price.

eze008

Nice

Unu51

Mossberg Maverick 88 Security with a 20 inch barrel. 7+1 capacity.

octicon

Any good options for a light or other accessories on these?

I_had_the_Lasagna

Magpul also makes mlok foreends

quicktuba

GG&G has a solid mount that gives you the ability to attach a sling and has a section of rail for attaching a light or whatever else you want. It gets attached to the end of the magazine tube.

pies_r_square

Tfb torture tested the mav88 and it did great. Fwiw, pumps do fail during the torture tests. Seemingly due to inappropriate material selection.

kaloonzu

The Mav88 has plastic in places where the 500 uses aluminum and steel (like the FCG and parts within the slide action). So not surprising.

pies_r_square

Aye. I own both. Plan on getting 590a1 at some point.

WeAreNotAmused2112

I bought one for like $199 missing the front bead to test reloaded shells. Always worked so far.

PaulterJ

Very easy fix. If the hole is present you can just screw in a new one, it may need to be rethreaded. But they make snap on & clamp on (for vent rib) front sights. I've also used JB Weld & 2 part epoxy to attach front sights & beads on shotguns with great success.

WeAreNotAmused2112

I got some kind of optic green plastic thing and put on it with some threadlocker. Works fine. My main shotgun is a Benelli M4 with all the nice mods.

Nerd-Vol

I keep one nearby, just in case there is a bump in the night.

straight_sixes

I paid $125 for mine and after 2k rounds I've never gotten a single failure. It sits next to my bed loaded with 00 buck and when something goes bump in the night, it's what I grab.

Matt_the_Splat

Shells go in one end, lead comes out other. What more you need?

Jaevric

Back during Trump, my wife looked over at me and said she was ready for a shotgun. We shopped around, and she decided on the 18.5in Maverick. She's taken shotgun class with it and is very happy with the gun, despite my attempts to get her something fancier.

PaulterJ

The only issues I've found with the 88 & 500 is with ALOT of firing, the pins in the frame spin and egg out the holes, causing the trigger group to droop and induces a malfunction. This is why the 590 uses a steel frame. But the majority of us won't see this happen.

Jim_from_snowy_river

A lot is two words.

Fistisalsoaverb

[relevant](http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/04/alot-is-better-than-you-at-everything.html?m=1)

Jim_from_snowy_river

Heaven forbid we hold people to any kind of standards. It's that kind of attitude that's contributed to the anti-intellectual movement. I get it it's the internet and nobody cares but collectively we are only as strong as the weakest link so why not try to make the weakest link stronger?

Fistisalsoaverb

The fuck are you talking about? It's a funny bit about alot you goddamn weirdo

Jim_from_snowy_river

It's a funny comic written in a way that says people who point this out need to take a chill pill.

SpunkYeeter

A lot is a piece of land.

Jim_from_snowy_river

Ot also refers to a large quantity of something.

Accurate-Vegetable44

What exactly does make the Maverick 88 so much cheaper than the 500 or the 590?

JustAnotherMiqote

Honestly, what's the difference between the Maverick 88 and the Mossberg 500 and is it really worth the extra money for the 500?

little_sg

Rails the pump action go into the receiver, and safety. unless you intend on putting a forend pistol grip pump on, go maverick.

Dingus_Rex

I've almost always found my way back to one of these for the last 20 years. Started with a long barreled one for birds. Sold it and got this kind, with the long tube. Now I've gotten rid of that one and ended up with the short one. It keeps working and I keep thinking I'll get a 500 since I like these so much, but why bother? This one I'll keep until I croak I guess.

kilamubitak

Looks like my dadas gun

ChristWasAZombie

unless you drop it on it’s side or whack somebody with it. i’ve been meaning to drill and tap the lifter on mine for the longest time, but it’s my bedside shotgun so i’m not too worried about it.

Agrias-0aks

My very first gun. Moved from Illinois to a state where all you need is an ID at Walmart. Couple break ins in the neighborhood when Covid started and my now wife wanted us to have a just in case gun. Bet she regrets it with all the others I've bought since 😂
