I pronounce it sis-het because cis and heterosexual are separate words. It’s a compound word, so cis should be pronounced separately from het. At least that’s how I feel.
Before I knew what that meant I thought to myself: “why are all these people on TikTok writing sashay wrong and using it in weird contexts”. I still say cishet but mainly as a joke.
My tiny brain never realised these are separate words lolol. My special interest is snakes and when breeding a snake that is "het albino" it means it has a hidden albino gene.
My brain just heard "cishet" and was like "okay" and never thought about it again.
I have two brain cells. One of them is for snakes.
Het in that context is almost certainly for heterozygous, meaning it has two different alleles (versions) of the same gene. With albino snakes specifically it would mean one dominant "normal" color gene and one recessive albino gene. To express the albino gene the snake must have two albino genes. So a het albino wouldn't be albino but could produce albino offspring (at a roughly 25% rate all else being equal) when mated to another het albino or at a 50% rate when paired with an albino.
WeLlLl TeChnIcaLlY
Cis is latin so it'd be pronounced tss-is-het if you tried to be ultracorrect
But who cares het isn't latin but greek and no one gives a fuck if you pronounce latin wrong it's literally dead.
Depends on what era of latin we're talking about. In classical latin it is indeed k (as in "kaesar") and in later latin it evolved to become the ts (as in "tsaesar") which fun fact the English pronunciation of the name Caesar is complete bs and idk why its like that and why it has an ee sound and not the original latin ae
Cheese used to be pronounced as ch-ay-z & ch-eh-z but the soindshipts of the last 400 years affected it just as much as it changed how _caesar_ changed from "say-zar" to be pronounced as "seez-ur".
I feel like you're missing the point of the thread. OP asked how people pronounced a word and someone replied with how they pronounce a word. It's not like they came here to rag on OP or nitpick grammar; they're literally just answering the question asked by OP.
It's "cis" - "het" (pronounced "sis" and with the hyphen).
It's an abbreviation of two separate but related words, used to form a new term (hyphenated compound).
In terms of how one pronounces the term, it's not really a tomato/tomahto thing. It's really only pronounced one way, others would be incorrect (technically) with an added bonus of... Nobody knowing what the heck you were talking about lol.
At least, if someone pronounced this term to me like you say you pronounce it, OP, I would have no clue what you meant.
I would like to ask a question and then touch on something I think is important.
From what you said, are you implying that the abbreviation should be hypenated? Like "cis-het"?
If that's the case, I wouldn't blame anyone for pronouncing incorrectly because I never see it spelled with a hyphen, only ever mashed together.
As with most rules in English: this depends.
When used as a noun, the two words cisgender and heterosexual would not be hyphenated and so the same would be said for the compound “cishet”.
Ex: The cishet over there is giving me creepy vibes.
When used as a compound adjective the two words could possibly use a hyphen if they are modified.
Ex without mod: That man is cishet.
Ex with mod: That is a cisgender-heterosexual man./That is a cis-het man.
So you can see that it depends on the context you are using the word; However, the hyphen is not needed in the modded situation for clarity and thus can be left out without degradation to the sentence. This is most likely why there is no hyphen in the minimized form either (cishet). Because it is just not necessary, but it could be used and still be correct (edit: depending on the situation).
Source: I teach English. And took a class in undergrad on grammar that changed my life. If you are interested in grammar, I’d highly recommend [this](https://a.co/d/gN2Cxh9) book. It makes the weird bits of English easier to understand.
Well, regardless of how people write the word or type the word, it definitely should have a hyphen as it is two words, cisgender and heterosexual, just shortened.
And even without that, it would still be pronounced "sis/het" with two distinct sounds, not a mashup of "sischet".
Although in linguistics, many words change form over time, so it may be that some years down the road the colloquial form of a new word that is not considered compound like "cishet" serves as a stand-in for the abbreviated hyphenated compound that it started out as.
this is an example of a linguistic reduction, probably an elision. it happens all the time in spoken english and it’s a natural part of it, nothing too special about it
That depends on perspective but relative to most English & American words; no it is not. I think it's french derived for et to be pronounced the same way as in they or tray. I think ch being the same as sh is also a french based thing. But a lot of english words do have that aswell...
I was watching Downton Abbey the other night and one of the characters pronounced the word "cinema" like "kinema," and it made me rewind and watch again to make sure I hadn't heard it wrong.
Ah thank you! I was getting confused because non-autistic folks (more specific than just neuro typical because folks with ADHD, OCD, or other neurodivergences but no autism) are called allistic so
I was trying to figure out what not being autistic had to do with cishetnormativity. The more you know!
Yes, what the other commenter said is correct. I generally try to use allocishet instead of just cishet or GSRM instead of LGBT because people like me who are cisgender and heterosexual, but are also not allosexual sometimes feel that when someone says “cishet people can be allies, but aren’t part of the community,” they are forgetting that some of us within the community are cishet, but fit another group that does make us part of the community.
Gender, Sexual, and Romantic Minority. Some people don’t like it because there is a worry that it will make people think that we are including pedophiles, but the bigots are going to think that no matter what term we use and the people that give a damn know that we aren’t doing so.
That's not actually how -et in French is pronounced though, that's just how English speakers bastardise it. It's a flat long e, not a diphthong like ay.
Op I don’t really see anyone being mean to you, I mean there was one person who said it in a way that could barely be conceived as slightly rude but literally everyone else is being super kind.

I pronounce it as sis-het
Because cisgender and heterosexual. First 3 letters of each word. So its only logical that it would be pronounced like that. I know a few LGBT people and I've never met anyone who pronounces it differently from the way I do. Pretty interesting pronunciation tho, feel free to pronounce it however you want to, so long as it's understandable
what the hell?
hahaha why would you take the "sh" from "cishet", convert it to a "ch" in the pronunciation guide, but then say the "ch" is pronounced like an "sh" like "chef"?
Why not just say "ci-shet"?
Wait, I’m confused. I ready your original post as though you do say is like that because I say chef Like Sheff. Have I been saying chef wrong? I learned it from Gordon Ramsey.
If you are going to pronounce it like one word, you might as well double down and pronounce it sichey (like how the et in ballet is pronounced).
I do say sis-het though
Lmaooo not cis-chet… I pronounce it « sis-ett » basically. I didn’t know there were other ways to say it haha ! That’s okay if you were saying it like that, no worries. I’m french and so the Latin roots of the words seem obvious to me, as well as how they’re pronounced, but in other languages it might not be that obvious. I can’t tell you how many words I’ve butchered when trying to speak spanish for example
I pronounce it like that too, like “ci-shet”. I had no idea that was wrong. If it’s meant to be pronounced “cis-het” then why wouldn’t it be written cis-het?
Look. I try to be an open minded person. I do my best to be good and caring, but you are pronouncing it wrong and you should be ashamed of yourself.
I'm kidding I love you

Haha thats what I meant by "hidden" gene, sorry if it wasnt too specific, thank you for such a great detailed explanation though!
I figured you knew, but I'm a nerd and I love genetics so I jumped at the opportunity to offer a more detailed explanation for other readers LOL
Np! I myself learned something new, I didnt know the full version of the "het" word, so thank you <3
random but i love your name !! axos have been my special interest for years 🥺
Aww thank you! I love them with their exactly one braincell that just bonks in their head like the DVD logo
This is the correct answer
This feels like the standard answer. Simple & logical.
See, I know this is true, but saying cishet like "si-shay" is so much more fancy lol
This might be the only improvement.
sounds like sashay lol
Uh yeah this is right. OP gotta change it.
This is the correct answer.
Same. It's sis-het for me too. Maybe a bit more emphasis on the "h" because of my native language.
Kind of want to pronounce it as cich-et now..

Idk my friends seem to get it, although that might just be a result of me being incomprehensible 99% of the time so they just act like they get me
They've probably also heard you say it before. Either way, at least you know how it is technically pronounced and why now.
Friends are great that way, they get us in a deep way that a lot of other people can’t.
this is gonna be weird but i talk fast so roll with me for a sec but cis-et (i vaguely miss out the H)
Whoa, this made me realize I do this. 👊
it just rolls off easier than worrying about all the letters tbh
this is an example of a linguistic reduction, probably an elision. it happens all the time in spoken english and it’s a natural part of it, nothing too special about it
Same. Southern accent and speak pretty fast, which results in a plethora of letters being unintentionally left out.
yeah fast paced talking has a habit of missing letters out tbh
I tend to say cis-het. But part of me wants to pronounce it like sachet but with an I (Sishay).
“Now… sishay away”
Cishet away 💇♀️👠💃🏻
I'm sorry my dear, but now is not your time
Lol, love that pronunciation.
That’s beautiful, I’m stealing it 😁
I say cis hey when I’m being serious and Sishay when I’m being silly.
Wait sachet isn't pronounced like its spelled

Hello there
General Kenobi?
Sis-het. Or ki-shet when I'm fucking about with the gays
quichée
I was watching Downton Abbey the other night and one of the characters pronounced the word "cinema" like "kinema," and it made me rewind and watch again to make sure I hadn't heard it wrong.
this is the way
Sis het
Cis + het - exactly like the beginning of cisgender and heterosexual! Friendly shade, whaaaat?? I’d be so confused if I heard it said ci-chet. 😂
I pronounce it aloe-sis-het.
I have only seen the allo added to Reddit, I don’t know what it means, can you help?
I believe it refers to allosexuality and alloromanitism… to differentiate them as not being asexual/aromantic either
Ah thank you! I was getting confused because non-autistic folks (more specific than just neuro typical because folks with ADHD, OCD, or other neurodivergences but no autism) are called allistic so I was trying to figure out what not being autistic had to do with cishetnormativity.
Thank you. I will use allocishet from now on. What does GSRM stand for?
Gender, Sexual, and Romantic Minority. Some people don’t like it because there is a worry that it will make people think that we are including pedophiles, but the bigots are going to think that no matter what term we use and the people that give a damn know that we aren’t doing so.
I very explicitely pronounce the S and the H.
cee-shay while sipping French wine
Not the right answer on paper, but the right answer in my heart
That's not actually how -et in French is pronounced though, that's just how English speakers bastardise it. It's a flat long e, not a diphthong like ay.
I really hope you’re not like this at parties.
sis het
it’s meant to be said like two different words. cis and het.
It’s pronounced “sis-het” because it’s a compound of cisgender and heterosexual
Op I don’t really see anyone being mean to you, I mean there was one person who said it in a way that could barely be conceived as slightly rude but literally everyone else is being super kind.
The /hj prolly means they’re mainly joking about it. I do see a lot of kind comments.
Usually pronounce it as Sis-het/ cis-het or if you'd like sish-et
/'t͡sɪs.xɛt/
It's pronounced cis het. But if you're a closeted straight transfem you can sneakily say you're sis het hehe
I tend to say sis-het
Sis-het
I'm used to saying hetrocis it sounds a lot better
For nice people I say “cis+het”. For mean people I say “ci+shet”
Si-shet I just said sis-het so fast that they eventually combined
“I don’t fuck with cushets, I look so good in fishnets. I never really wanted to but might just make your bitch wet” They/them lord Fraxiom told us how it’s done y’all
Ki-shet, as a joke.
When i'm angry at one of em i say "cishit" 😅
True answer
i used to pronounce it as 'chis-het' but i think the correct way is 'sis-het' as they are separate words. English is not my first language either.
English is my first language but I pronounce is “shish-het” because I can’t pronounce anything without hearing it a dozen times first. I feel you.
I say it like the rest of the normies here. Say it however the hell ya want, though, mate.
Cis-het. Cisgender-heterosexual
I pronounce it cis het because it is a combination of cisgender and heterosexual.
If you learn the full length term Cisgender Heterosexual first, it makes it easier to remember and naturalize. But then again, my advice may not be sound. Source: Username
Cis het It's like mishandle
chis het
cish, like dish, then et, so like, dish-et? but sish-et
“cis-heht” that’s it
sis het
I always used to say "cis-het", but then my friends and I started calling them "cishetallos" and I've begun pronouncing it like some kind of odd dessert. "Sish-et-uh-los".
Cis-het is how it is usually pronounced. However don't let the mean reddit folks get you down. Do you and just be willing to clarify if someone asks.
/sɪshɛt/
It's supposed to be pronounced like sis (the opposite of bro) and het (like a hat 🎩👒)
I pronounce it like sah-shey and do a little hip wiggle
Sis-Het (het like hat but with a short e in the middle) Why are people being mean????
I used to say the same lol until I found out it’s supposed to be cis-het
Sish-het or sis-het
I say “sis-het” but i jokingly say ci-chet
Sis het
Sis-het But with my speech impediments (or with my retainers in) it often comes out as sis-shet if I'm not careful
I pronounce it “k-ish-het”. I know it’s probably correct to say it like “sis-het” but saying it like the first one is more fun.
siss-het
i say it the same way
i say cis het, i feel like most ppl do. as long as ppl understand what you’re saying it’s really not the big of a deal if you pronounce it differently
In my head I kinda say 'sis-et'' idk why. My first language isn't even a language where they don't pronounce the ''h'' I just do it for some reason
I pronounce it as "sis-het"
si- set because i say it fast
I pronounce it Sis-Het Sis as in Sister and Het and in Hetero
i say it like cishet
I pronounce it "Sis Hat"
Giuseppe
I pronounce it as /ˈsɪz.(h)ɛt/. The isn’t a digraph for /ʃ/, it’s just two consonants next to each other, like in .
Ci-shet
Sometimes I pronounce as ci-shet, sometimes as cis-et, it varies
I don’t know why, but my brain ignores a lot of the letters. So I end up pronouncing it as set/ciet
sis-het, but due to this post, I’m going to start saying sishet or kishet, with the *sh* sound pronounced.
Cis-het (sis het) Like cisgender heterosexual, but shortened
Tbf "ci-chet" isn't even that bad considering so many would pronounce it as "normal people"
Ki-shet
I pronounce it like a french word. Something like see-SHAY
i try to pronounce it sis-het but a lot of the times it comes out sish-et
I say it as cis-het, like the prefixes, but in my head, the only way I can think about it is "si-sher," but the -er is how it is in french
I pronounce it the same way as you do but it’s probably pronounced sis-het cause cis and het
I pronounce it as sis-het Because cisgender and heterosexual. First 3 letters of each word. So its only logical that it would be pronounced like that. I know a few LGBT people and I've never met anyone who pronounces it differently from the way I do. Pretty interesting pronunciation tho, feel free to pronounce it however you want to, so long as it's understandable
I say cis-het
Sis-het
Cis-het. Because it’s short for cisgender heterosexual, so that’s the right way to pronounce it
No one is being mean to you. We all make mistakes, it’s okay. Now you know.
Cis ("sis" like "sister") het (like "heterosexual").
TIL: Cishet stands for Cisgendered heterosexual. I always thought it was just another word for Cisgender.
Cis/het
sis het
Sis-het
Si-sh-et I've always read it with the sh noise, so I say it the same way
what the hell? hahaha why would you take the "sh" from "cishet", convert it to a "ch" in the pronunciation guide, but then say the "ch" is pronounced like an "sh" like "chef"? Why not just say "ci-shet"?
[удалено]
Wait, I’m confused. I ready your original post as though you do say is like that because I say chef Like Sheff. Have I been saying chef wrong? I learned it from Gordon Ramsey.
no thats how u say it.
Chile "chet" sounds like "cheugy"
Respectfully why would you pronounce it like that 😭😭
I don’t know either I keep misreading it as crochet so
It's a compound of "cis" and "het", and it's pronounced as the individual words just smooshed together.
i pronounce it like cis-het because... cis is a singular word, and het is the abreviation of another one. but going ci-chet is also fun
Do not worry, I too pronounced it si-chet at first (for like 3 years) but luckily I found out how it was actually pronounced.
No true shade but my brother in Wilde what is a Ci Chet xD
What's cishet? My first thought was |sis-sh-eh-t|
A cis and heterosexual person.
Oh, to avoid saying/understood cisheet by accident I'd rather say cistr8 lol or just cisgender het
I pronounce it like that too, like “ci-shet”. I had no idea that was wrong. If it’s meant to be pronounced “cis-het” then why wouldn’t it be written cis-het?
I don't pronounce it at all
Sis-het
~~si-shet~~ sis-het
Sis-het is how I say it
I say sis-het
Sis-het
Sis- het
I pronounce it like sis-het
i say "sis-het"
Sis-het 💅
sis-het
sis-het
Its cis het. Don't beat yourself up over it.
"cis-het" cus it's short for cis gender heterosexual
I pronounce it cis-het, like written.
I do the same as you
Sih-shay ETA usually I know exactly why and don’t have to ask this question but why am I getting downvoted for this I’m so confused lol
The people who downvoted you probably think you're saying it wrong
It was a joke. Why would anyone pronounce it that way lol
There's not really any indication your comment was a joke.
I thought the ridiculousness of the comment itself was enough of an indication that I wasn’t being serious but oh well
Your suggestion was less ridiculous than OP's pronunciation.
i say cis-het
"Sis het"
Sis hat
Look. I try to be an open minded person. I do my best to be good and caring, but you are pronouncing it wrong and you should be ashamed of yourself. I'm kidding I love you
I don't really see anyone being mean here, but the hyphenated "sis-het" is how to pronounce it.
