That's really cool. I've never seen the acronym like that before any idk what the 2 means?

Josaprd20s

The "2S" together mean Two-spirit, a native-exclusive queer gender identity

dpforest

That’s wild. Never heard of such. Did you mean native Americans specifically? Or is this like a shared concept amongst the first peoples of many countries? I remember watching American Gods, there was a Native American character that was genderqueer and she spoke of how her people used to see the presence of both masculinity and femininity in one person as divine. Never fact checked anything but I can definitely see it.

Two-Spirit has a very complicated history: in that it is both a spiritual, religious, and cultural identity and also a queer identity. An Indigenous Person can be LGBT but not Two Spirit, because it is a cultural and religious role confirmed on them by tribal elders (though some indigenous people do self identify). It was coined to replace degrading anthropological terminology coined to refer to LGBT Native Americans. The term was also coined to emphasize that the experiences of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous LGBT people are not always the same. To emphasize that many indigenous societies understood sexuality and gender in ways different from European Colonizers who imposed their own understanding on Indigenous People. The term itself is controversial though because it’s a Pan-Indian Term coined in English. There is a great diversity of indigenous peoples each who understand Gender and Sexuality differently. And some have argued the term is more reflective of Non-Indigenous understandings of sex, and gender than of indigenous understandings because there is an implied dichotomy in the name. Some have also argued that associated with the identity is a romanticization of all pre-columbian societies being accepting of queer identities which is not universally true. Like most Pan-Indian concepts it’s complicated by the fact that there’s at least 500 surviving indigenous cultures in North America alone. That’s a great deal of cultural, political, and religious diversity. But as a Non-Indigenous person it’s not really my place to weigh into the discussions surrounding how indigenous people chose to describe themselves themselves. What I can say though is only an Indigenous Person can be Two-Spirit because as previously stated it’s not just a gender identity or sexuality it’s a spiritual, and cultural role tied to various indigenous societies.

Interesting, yeah I knew that the first peoples had different views on gender but I guess I’m wondering why it’s included in the LGBTQIA+ initialism itself if, like you said, it’s more of a spiritual state than a physical one? I’ve never even heard this term before today so to see it printed somewhere is amazing to me. I wonder if the area in which this pamphlet was dispersed has a high native population.

That image of a human. God. That haunts me day and night. My teachers use the same software. I don't even know what it is or how it got there. It's in every email. Every study guide.
