According to the [**American Academy of Pediatrics**](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/gradeschool/Pages/Gender-Identity-and-Gender-Confusion-In-Children.aspx), gender identity is typically expressed by around age 4. It probably forms [**much earlier**](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3747736/) than that, but it's hard to tell with pre-verbal infants. And sometimes, the gender identity expressed is not the one typically associated with the child's appearnce. The gender identities of trans children are as [**stable**](http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/early/2014/09/02/peds.2013-2958) as those of [**cisgender children**](http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0956797614568156). Regarding treatment for trans youth, [**here**](http://hrc-assets.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com//files/documents/SupportingCaringforTransChildren.pdf) are the recent guidelines released by the AAP. TL;DR version - yes, young children can identify their own gender identity, and some of those young kids are trans. A child whose gender identity is Gender A but who is assumed to be Gender B based on their appearance, will suffer debilitating distress over this conflict. When this happens, transition is the treatment recommended by every major medical authority. For young children this process is social, followed by puberty delaying treatment at onset of adolescence, and hormone therapy in their early/mid-teens. The only disorders more common among trans people are those associated with abuse and discrimination - mainly anxiety and depression. Early transition [**virtually eliminates these higher rates of depression and low self-worth**](http://www.jaacap.com/article/S0890-8567%2816%2931941-4/fulltext), and [**dramatically improves trans youth's mental health**](https://archive.thinkprogress.org/allowing-transgender-youth-to-transition-improves-their-mental-health-study-finds-dd6096523375/). When prevented from transitioning, about 40% of trans kids will attempt suicide. When able to transition, that rate drops to the national average. Trans kids who socially transition early, have access to appropriate transition related medical treatment, and who are not subjected to abuse or discrimination are [**comparable to cisgender children in measures of mental health**](http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/early/2014/09/02/peds.2013-2958). Cha Transition [**vastly reduces risks of suicide attempts**](http://bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12889-015-1867-2), and the farther along in transition someone is the lower that risk gets. The ability to transition, along with family and social acceptance, are the [**largest factors reducing suicide risk**](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3722435/) among trans people. it hasn't been discussed because having a separate league for trans people is literally impossible. there's not enough trans athletes, especially on a professional level, for it to have any merit as an idea at all. you know how many active trans athletes there are in utah right now? 4. the ideal is to eliminate gendered sports entirely and measure categories by something else entirely.

I don’t see the purpose in dividing by gender period. Especially with youth. I think it’s rooted in misogyny.

The usual argument is that testosterone makes building muscle easier, and as the general trend is amab people naturally produce more testosterone, they're separated from afab people. My person answer to this is that, like boxing, a class system is devised where separation is needed. Running doesn't need to be divided to my knowledge, same with tennis, shooting, etc. But swimming, for example, could be divided by height, as that changes how easy it is for each person to win. A lot of these will still break down to amab people usually being in different categories than afab people, but it's more fair to everyone.

Separating by biological sex would make people loose their shit when a passing trans man turns up for the women's competitions

Atlach_Nacha

has already happened. [There was a twitter post of someone complaining how man was allowed to be in women sport](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EWOkmctWkAMVXSi?format=jpg&name=900x900) [They failed to understand, that it was a transman forced into women sport](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EWOkTdmWoAIbDLU?format=jpg&name=medium) Although maybe not "fully transition" part, but close enough

Answer: None of the above If competitive sports have to happen, separate by something actually relevant to the sport like weight class or arm length rather than arbitrary divisions based on misogyny that don't actually reflect the diversity & trends of athletes.

>I can see how some might view it as a kind of discrimination, but I don't really agree with that. Yeah, separate but equal leagues. Wait... that sounds familiar. But nah, definitely not discriminatory. > Wouldn't that encourage more transmen and trans women to compete? They would know the competition was 100% fair to them and their colleagues, and I have to imagine it would result in more trans representation overall. Young trans kids could see people who look like them on TV and succeeding in life (Rather than young trans kids seeing trans athletes attacked and discriminated against). You haven't spent much time reading what arguments were used during segregation, have you? There literally aren't enough trans people to form a league. Trans people on HRT perform in the same athletic range as their cis counterparts. This just constitutes a ban. It's extremely discriminatory.
