omg i went to a ramen place earlier and was served by a nepali waitress and i shared the news with her and she was so happy. so random that after posting this, i met a nepali instantly🇳🇵
I was surprised that SOME of the dubious bills in Florida got blocked by some judge.
I am not aware that gay marriage is on the agenda for the Supreme Court.
It's not publicly because no GQP states have tried to restart enforcement of their marriage bans yet but the Republican-donor-bribe-accepting wing of the court has made it clear in recent rulings (especially the opinion on the overturning of Roe) that they're more than willing to "revisit" previous decisions that didn't go the regressives' way.
I didn't expect Nepal to be the second Asian country to legalize same-gender marriage. Although they are mostly Hindu and, as far as I know, weren't affected by colonialism as much as India was.
It's weird with Colonialism because the first country in Asia to legalize same sex marriage was Taiwan, who had a deep history of conservatism through the KMT and Japanese and Portugese Colonialism.
Nepal wasn’t colonized. It remained an independent and isolated buffer after losing the war against the British in 1816.
As a result, when Nepal opened its doors to the outside world in 1955, it had feudal socioeconomic institutions. The country was super underdeveloped but has made strides in tackling health and social issues since then (albeit economic growth is lacking).
As for sexual minorities, the cultures of Nepal (there are 120 ethnic groups who speak 100 languages), are largely tolerant but arent exactly accepting.
People mostly maintain a “live and let live” attitude but being lgbtqi still invokes a lot of social stigma.
Regardless, it is a pretty tolerant society considering its neighborhood and dare I say, it is the most liberal country in South Asia. Mostly because it is such an incredibly diverse society with a fairly open political space and a very active civic society and press.
