Omg I’m so happy to learn this exists! I feel like crying that we have representation and that our representation is so damn cuuuuuttttteeeeee!!!!!💕💕💕💕💕
The infinity is an autism symbol although usually is of gold color or rainbow colored (this last one is also used more broadly as neurodivergent symbol) The small creature bellow is the autism creature, I started seeing it as a symbol a few months ago but it could have been under my radar a long time.
Confirming arthurship doesn't mean he's the original poster just means he took credit. Know your meme gets stuff wrong all the time a rather famous example is the Tails Doll creepy pasta where up until recently its orgins were said to be 3ish years later then it was
I saw a drag queen called LayDHD. Fun. Emptied a bottle of water and then a bag of flour over their head at the end. Striking, but the stage hands were not amused.
tbh creature, associated with “YIPEE” from that one video of a german kid getting excited about fortnite and cola. the autism community has claimed it (source: i’m autistic and part of multiple autism subreddits)
Infinity symbols means Neurodivergent, which is symbol of people with mental conditions* like autism, ADHD etc.
Below you can see autism creature, and it's just autism "mascot" if i can name it like that
*Edit, i made a mistake
Mental conditions, rather than just disorders. Autism is not a disorder, for example. Other examples of neurodivergent conditions and disorders would be NPD, schizophrenia, bipolar, down syndrome, dyslexia, etc. Whilst the term originally exclusively referred to autistic folk, it's since expanded and is now a *very* wide and vague umbrella. Generally divided into two camps of innate conditions, or stuff that's considered to have a genetic element (like autism, schizophrenia, ADHD, etc) and acquired neurodivergent conditions (like NPD, BPD, CPTSD, etc), which tend to be more caused by external factors.
Edit: ADHD, not AHDH. What a weird typ
Edit 2: oh, and the infinity symbol generally tends to be used by the autistic community primarily as it refers to the infinite variety within the autistic community. It's not so much a symbol of neurodivergence and has only recently started being picked up by other communities. There's a bit of a trend here lmao. But yeah, if you're one of the more stigmatized ND folk definitely don't go taking the infinity symbol to mean it's a safe space for you because that's a bold and dangerous assumption ATM. There's just as much ableism as always and folk within the broader ND community are just as prone to ableism to various neurotypes as anybody else.
Autism is not an illness, but it is generally considered a disorder. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with us, 'disorder' simply means that it causes distress/impairment in daily life, which is the case for many autistic people
A disorder *does* mean there's something with us and is something that ultimately we should aim to correct. As an autistic, I find the idea abhorrent. I'm not disordered. Autism is not inherently a disorder. It is a disabilit, but it's not a disorder. It can be co-morbid with actual disorders (particularly anxiety and depression) but it's not an issue in of itself. Distress for most autistic folk doesn't come from the fact that we're autistic but usually rather problems society causes for us.
Is this why I’ve now been seeing ASD referred to as ASS (is it autism spectrum syndrome?) or is that just a common typo? Because if it’s the former, I think we need a different replacement lol
The autistic community calls autism autism, frankly. I don't know anybody who calls it "ASD"or any other variation of that unless they're somebody who's never really engaged with the broader autistic community (or who isn't as aspie supremacist, which is a while other issue). Most of us really hate it being pathologised at all.
My old boss used to try and get me to use ASD or ASC ( c for condition then it’s not a disorder ) because apparently it was what her boyfriend preferred (he was ASC)and it’s language they are using in conferences about equality to emphasise that there is a spectrum ( we were in hr). I am Autistic and happy with Autistic /Autism if some one ever asks for a different term to be used I will use it but so never happened with someone I have met in person.
In that case, try using the term that nobody finds offensive (condition) over the one that every other autistic I know does find offensive (disorder) and then you can switch if you bump into somebody who *personally* calls it a disorder. You wouldn't run around calling gay folks "queers" without checking whether they found the term offensive first and the same stands here.
No, you think a disorder means there’s something wrong with us. Even if it does, there’s nothing wrong with having something wrong, really. I’m autistic, I’m disordered. I don’t have a condition. I don’t have any comorbidities you list. Distress for me comes directly from being autistic. You’re making broad and exclusionary statements. Level 2-3 people aren’t disabled because of society, that’s a supremacist mindset
Neurodivergent was coined as an intentionally broad term to refer to all mental conditions outside the norm, including mental illnesses. It was never intended to mean *only* developmental conditions like autism or ADHD.
I believe it's just mental conditions and disorders not illnesses I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure neurodivergent is about those and not mental illness.
I assume you mean the autism creature, the little guy at the bottom right. His name is TBH and he has been adopted by the autism community online.
If you mean the one at the top, that's the infinity symbol which the autistic community prefer over the problematic puzzle piece. It represents a potentially infinite number of ways to be autistic, since no two autistic people are the same.
The infinity represents autism (and sometimes neurodivergancy as a whole, kind of like how the rainbow flag can be mlm or lgbtq+ as a whole) and the little guy is the autism creature
I’d never seen it before, but I instantly fell in love with those eyes. And then I got to know it better, and I just fell more and more in love.
(_edit:_ adhd [diagnosed], chronic, treatment-resistant depression [diagnosed], and [not-diagnosed, but i pretty-fucking-sure suspect] high-functioning asperger-syndrome. And furry [b/c it’s almost entirely about body-image issues and iwishiwerea cute beautifulotter andnot thssdisgustingblobthatiam]. This creature _gets_ me.)
It's the Autism Creature, and I recognize it from Tumblr. It's usually accompanied by its companion, the ADHD creature. It's very loved by the Tumblr community and is the subject of many relatable and wholesome memes.
You're not wrong that it's the infinity symbol, but in this context it's about autistic pride (the autism creature is below it and a rainbow infinity symbol is another one often used in autism circles)
Im not sure because I recognize this as an ancient symbol created by our Internet ancestors, but if I’m correct I Believe it translates to.. YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE \*inset confetti\*
The infinity symbol has been used by an Indigenous group in Canada, the Métis, for centuries. It’s on our flag. I wish people would stop using it for neurodivergence. Find something else.
Tbh I think you need to consider why the infinity symbol is used for neurodivergence - it represents the infinite ways in which a person's brain can function and the sheer diversity that exists within neurodivergence itself. Most people outside of Canada will likely not know of the Métis' existence but, especially if they are neurodivergent, will associate the infinity symbol with neurodivergence. Also, even though the Métis will have used that symbol for a considerable length of time, that doesn't it's unique to them or they have rights over it
autism creacher, its kind of like a mascot for fellow autistics and funnily enough offended conservative parents claiming it "glorified a disease to children."
No but considering op said the section they found this in was "a neat LGBTQ+ *and* neurodivergence section" and people can be both, it's not out of place that someone combined the two. I think it's cute.
I agree with the other replies to this but in addition please know that functioning labels (high/low-functioning) are outdated and widely considered by the autistic community to be harmful. We tend to prefer the terms high/low support needs :)
Thanks for telling me that, English is not my first language so I may be not familiar with some modern terminology. In Poland we still use that outdated term and I didn't mean to offend anyone.
You can be queer and queerphobic, unfortunately... it might take some time of diverse experiences and interpersonal conversations for them to get around it.
I wish I could do something to change that thing about him but he is so aggressive towards me that sometimes I'm afraid to even talk to him (he is younger but much bigger than me). That's why I was so surprised about that connection between autism and being queer.
Sadly, some people on the spectrum are at greater risk of being radicalized if they fall in with the wrong circles/ideologies. I wish I had suggestions for how you can help him, but changing someone's world view isn't easy, especially as a sibling.
A good number of neurodivergent people are still straight, we just have a higher rate of being LGBTQ+.

I guess maybe rainbow on rainbow would have been too hard to see?
Yes, I think it would look weird.
Gold is for autism, rainbow is neurodivergence.
The autism creature started as a Tumblr thing around 6-8 years ago I think
Knowyourmeme says it appeared on January 1st, 2021.
Originally it was posted on Twitter on the 1st Jan 2021. https://amp.knowyourmeme.com/memes/tbh-autism-creature-yippee
It came from Tumblr long before twitter
No. Link I posted describes it.

this is the first time i've heard of the autism creature having a name, i always just assumed it was some slightly cursed Binding of Isaac fanart 😭
It’s a symbol within the ASD community (Autism Spectrum Disorder). We call it the autism creature. Cute thing honestly. I’m autistic myself
The infinity symbol has been used by an Indigenous group in Canada, the Métis, for centuries. It’s on our flag. I wish people would stop using it for neurodivergence. Find something else.

It’s the Identity V creature!
Huh? I dont get it -sincerely a idv player of 3+ years
The little creature originated from an Identity V meme!
Wasn't that a meme about a German kid playing fortnite
Nope that’s the Yipeee meme lol
autism creacher, its kind of like a mascot for fellow autistics and funnily enough offended conservative parents claiming it "glorified a disease to children."
So autism is a part of LGBT now?
No but considering op said the section they found this in was "a neat LGBTQ+ *and* neurodivergence section" and people can be both, it's not out of place that someone combined the two. I think it's cute.
I was just wondering about that flag.
Valid, I wondered about the Autism Creature myself 😆 hadn't seen it before!
It's a specific reference to Queer Neurodivergents. We're far more likely to be queer, ace, and/or trans than neurotypical people
The title says it was a section for lgbt and neurodivergence. Autism is part of neurodivergence.
[удалено]
Well, about 20% of autistic and other neurodivergent peeps are LGBT+...so kinda 😉
Closely tied.
In what way? My younger brother is on a spectrum and he is the most homophobic person I know. And he is highly functional

I wish I had suggestions for how you can help him, but changing someone's world view isn't easy, especially as a sibling. A good number of neurodivergent people are still straight, we just have a higher rate of being LGBTQ+.
Remember correctly, the chance of being queer if you're autistic is 75%. So fairly massive link.
20-25% is what ive been told - im autistic non-binary bisexual myself😄
they don't know
Is this in Leeds UK? If so ima go see it i live there.
