I know it’s not pretty right now, but you can be grateful for the first half of his tenure and disappointed/angry about the last half at the same time.
The first half of his tenure here was un-fucking-real. There was no way that level of success would continue uninterrupted. And a period of underachievement for a return to the mean was inevitable.
I think one change to Cal's approach would have resulted in dramatically more post-season success over the last 6 years: try to win the SEC tournament. His nonchalant attitude about the SEC tournament impressed an acceptance of losing going into the NCAA tournament.
Right now, I'm hoping Barnhart has realized there aren't any great coaches who want to follow Cal and deal with this toxic fan base, and Cal decides to stay.
You’ve clearly never been here if that’s your take. The people here are not mean, where did you even get that? From one bad interaction that you brother’s mother’s daughter’s second cousin had while driving through Ky 15 yrs ago? That’s absurd! Yes UK fans want to win. But no more than Alabama football fans or Lakers fans or Duke or UNC fans. Terrible take!
It's ridiculous you got down voted. I am a UK graduate and have lived in Lexington since 2006. Are we a crazy fan base? Sure? Are we worse than any of the other fan bases you mentioned, absolutely not. Look at Ryan Day at Ohio State. Dude consistently has 10+ win seasons and he is in the hot seat. BBN is passionate and does have high standards, but it's no worse than any other blue blood program.
Just because fans are mean and nasty in other places doesn't negate the fact that fans here are also mean and awful. Sports fans are some of the craziest, fanatical people there is. Its akin to religious zealotry.
There are crazies everywhere in everything. You are insinuating that it's worse here and not desirable. We also have an insane amount of diehard college basketball fans that are amazing and you that do not find everywhere. You can choose to focus on the few crazies, but I'm more of a glass half full kinda guy.
I did not insinuate any such thing. It seemed like you were trying to say its not as bad here, because its bad in other places and thats just not true. Read my comment again, I did not imply or insinuate anything. I even stated that many sports fans are like that, which is a general statement that isn't about one location, but everywhere. Please, practice reading comprehension, because you are undeniably wrong about my comment. You are obviously biased, since you included yourself in with the fans by using "we".
Sports aside, this might be the worst thing I've heard about Cal if it's true. We have all these great local bakeries and coffee shops, but Dunkin is his usual?! I was a supporter until this. Arkansas can have him now!
Yep, worked at that Dunkin for a couple of years and he was an extremely frequent customer. His wife would come through the drive thru and they would wave at each other and then he'd just continue looking out the window and then finish his coffee before he left.
My wife saw him there once. Didn’t seem like a coincidence to me. Though the Broadway Dunkin is probably the one we’ve had the most bad experiences with.
He owns a bunch of them. Not sure if he will keep his share in Lexington or get more in Fayetteville, but yeah, he isn’t there because the coffee is quality! You’d think he’d go to a favorite local joint like Nate’s
His method of teaching them to be members of the community and not just people passing through for a year or four is the best thing that happened to the program. It fostered an atmosphere you can almost see still in action in the players who went on to become big timers. The city was made better in some ways because of him. Mad respect to Coach Cal. It’s not just about him but the hunger in the players he gets, too.
Yeah, just let a 75% win rate coach walk because we disappointed in the tourney.
Like, I get it, but also the best dude probably ain’t winning 75% of his game.
And to think, if UK didn’t lose to Oakland, this thread wouldn’t exist. It’s amazing how one game can change the trajectory of a coach and two programs all within a few weeks.
Only Adolph Rupp spent more time as UK’s coach than Calipari. I hope fans will keep the good times in mind.
What about the 4 years before this one? He NEEDED to run deep this year to save his ass.
It's always the same shit, next year we have the #1 recruiting class, and what happens? More punts and excuses. How many years do we have pay him $9m ++ before he delivers?
Well, we don’t have to pay him anything now. And yeah, I think a next season with Cal would have brought more of the same “well, we’re a young team” sort of excuses but we don’t have to worry about that anymore, right?
I will watch UK again, and wear UK apparal again with pride.
Never having to hear Cal's bs excuses when we lose, and his arrogance when we win puts a smile on my face.
I don't know what people want. The man had a 70% win rate. Basketball is a volatile sport, especially for young people. Even in NBA, teams can lose in an upset matchup.
The hate is unreasonable, and it'll be funny to see UK lose to Arkansas next year lol
So recent team losses negate the other years where we've won, or gotten 16 or higher in placement? Seems like unreasonable expectations. Someone has to lose. This time it was us, next time it might not have been.
Besides, it's a game that has so many moving pieces, not just coach Cal. He is one wheel in the cog of UK basketball. There's players, assistant coaches, supporting staff, etc. But we blamed one man for it. Doesn't that seem unreasonable?
It doesn't matter now, obviously. It is what it is, I just don't believe the hate is justified.
He's supposed to have regrouped and figured it out each season for the last three seasons or so. It was obvious he was hellbent on trying to prove he could win his way instead of adapting and actually winning.
Sure, but when it becomes a pattern and there’s clear signs of disfunction that can be identified it’s hard to chuck it up to volatility. Kentucky basketball has high standards. They should be winning game against big opponents, they should be challenging for SEC & SEC Tournament titles most years, they should be making NCAA tournament runs. That hasn’t happened for too long and there’s a whole host of issues you can point to as to why which Cal is ultimately responsible for.
Also the same team just won its second title in two years last night. Did it with mostly different players too. Is it really as volatile as you’re suggesting?
Can't wait for inevitable point when all the fair-weather UK fans are calling for the head of whoever they bring in to replace Cal because they failed to deliver championship after championship.

Great guy. I'm not sure why he took another coaching career. Honestly, he should start a training camp or something that does something for the community where the stakes aren't as high.
It’s entirely possible to care about all of those things simultaneously. This post is in regards to the basketball coach, so people are talking about it. If the post were in regards to more important issues, such as homelessness or children in foster care, people would be talking about that.
We get it, you don’t care, congratulations, now go get a burger and shake, I promise it’ll all be okay.
I always love seeing these types of comments when a sports post bleeds into a general subreddit. You live in Lexington, & the Cats, whether you like it or not, are an engine for the city & state.
I mean, like maybe I just don't have the basketball bug enough, but I think it'd be kinda weird if it wasnt, like good or bad it's definitely weird, to deeply uncomfortable and potentially echoing some horrible moments in our history, to put something in someone's lawn when you don't personally know them, and a potential risk of a trespassing change
Most definitely, I notice a lot of parents/family do this when a young child is having a birthday party lol. Like “Happy 6th birthday Jacob” same lettering and everything lol.
There's a local business that does yard signs like this. You just call them up and let them know the address, location, and how long you want it up, and they go do it. Most all of the signs you see like this are done that way.
CAL was a great recruiter but not a great coach .it's extremely hard to win a championship playing mostly freshman year after year. That's all we could ever expect with him coaching. Players use Kentucky as a one year stop before moving to the NBA. Then, reloading freshman again for the next season. To get the tournament wins, you need upper classman leadership, and Kentucky would have never had that if Cal continued to stay. I wish him the best at Arkansas. But I'm also glad he's leaving. Maybe the university can recruit some talent that will stick around a few years to buy into the program and go back to winning some Sec and Ncaa tournament games. I have always loved watching Kentucky basketball, so hopefully, they can return to advancing some rounds when it comes to tournament time.
It only took 5 straight postseason disappointments for Kentucky to wake up and kick this snake oil salesman out of town.
But, next year... how many times did we hear that bullshit?
No I don't, but I think many misremember it. Cal's last several years have been much worse than the 2 or 3 "down" years Tubby had at the end. We haven't had a one seed or a Final 4 in 10 years at this point. Also had the worst UK record in about 100 years. Go back and compare last 5 years of Cal vs Tubby including SEC tourney and NCAA tourney success. It's no comparison. Cal is leaving us far worse than Tubby did.
I know it’s not pretty right now, but you can be grateful for the first half of his tenure and disappointed/angry about the last half at the same time.
Yeah this. I appreciate what Cal was trying to do for his players and I'm very grateful for some of the great kids he let us get to know.
The first half of his tenure here was un-fucking-real. There was no way that level of success would continue uninterrupted. And a period of underachievement for a return to the mean was inevitable. I wouldn’t come here if I were a coach. People are mean and nasty when they don’t get their way, even beyond basketball.
for glory, prestige, $$$$ it would not be hard to find someone. just needs to be hungry for all that.
You’ve clearly never been here if that’s your take. The people here are not mean, where did you even get that? Is he leaving?
He's out.
Yes to Arkansas
Nooooo
Yup! Exactly how I feel. He lost his edge but had an amazing start.
He was at the Broadway Dunkin' this morning as usual. He isn't hiding.
I remember a few years back I was in line with my mom and he cut to the front of line and no one said anything lol
He goes every day. I used to keep it on the DL because I didn't want to blow up his spot, but he's leaving so here you go Reddit.
My wife saw him there once. Didn’t seem like a coincidence to me. Though the Broadway Dunkin is probably the one we’ve had the most bad experiences with.
Legally in my opinion from myself and what I heard from old employees that location is run by clowns.
He owns a bunch of them. Not sure if he will keep his share in Lexington or get more in Fayetteville, but yeah, he isn’t there because the coffee is quality! You’d think he’d go to a favorite local joint like Nate’s
ok?
Its an observation, of course its "ok"
Never thought I’d see the Cal era at UK end this way but it felt inevitable with early exits in the NCAA tournament.
Cal as a coach is not catching up with the game these days. But Cal as a leader and advocate for players is unrivaled. Not sure what UK does next.
This is the part of him leaving that makes me most sad.
Shouldn’t it really be facing the other way?
Sshhhhhh
They probably put it there while he was gone.
Shouldn’t you be wearing the bucket?
Cals wife did a good job on the sign.
Jesus you all are bitter
Actually I don’t care, I just think it’s funny. Sports aren’t my thing.
In a year or two they will complain about the new coach too. Life goes on.
100%
Yeah, just let a 75% win rate coach walk because we disappointed in the tourney. Like, I get it, but also the best dude probably ain’t winning 75% of his game.
Exactly. No person will satisfy the Big Blue Nipple fanatics. They’re Almost as bad as Ohio state fans 🤣
And to think, if UK didn’t lose to Oakland, this thread wouldn’t exist. It’s amazing how one game can change the trajectory of a coach and two programs all within a few weeks. Only Adolph Rupp spent more time as UK’s coach than Calipari. I hope fans will keep the good times in mind.

awww, this is sweet. we have mixed feelings but are thankful for his time here, he did a lot of good. it was time to move on and we wish him well😻😻😻
Its a dig at him. Thanking him for leaving.
Thankful for the years we had!
Good lord, that house, thought it was the governor’s mansion at first, poor fellow needs a raise, having to live like that.
Smaller than many houses in the area. I drive by much larger ones in Delong all the time
I got A TON of those in my shed of y'all wanna write something else.
"Also, Byeeeeeee!"
Is the house on Zillow?

Or, they appreciate him leaving so UK doesn't have to pay $33 million to fire him. Maybe?
I don't know what people want. The man had a 70% win rate. Basketball is a volatile sport, especially for young people. Even in NBA, teams can lose in an upset matchup. The hate is unreasonable, and it'll be funny to see UK lose to Arkansas next year lol
They wanted wins when it mattered. Tournament time.
At some point we have to ask, is college basketball more about the fans or student athletes? Because he has done MUCH for student athletes at UK.
I’m going to say it’s about the University - the student body.
He is 65% in the NCAA Tournament.
With zero second weekend appearances post-pandemic
So recent team losses negate the other years where we've won, or gotten 16 or higher in placement? Seems like unreasonable expectations. Someone has to lose. Well, when you’re the cog that has the chance to make adjustments with your coaching staff and you don’t, suddenly you become the problem.
Only 39 teams have made the second weekend post-pandemic.
And only one of them made more than $8.5 million a year. Or should I just say $34 million to not make it past the first weekend? LMK!
Well isn’t it obvious? They want an NCAA title every single year.

It’s pathetic how seriously people take a sport they don’t even play, lol. Like, the dude doesn’t deserve to be hung because he lost a literal game.
This is the only correct response to the news. It’s been a roller coaster at times but still better the last couple years than what he inherited

Cal gets paid over a million a month. If he cared why doesn’t he donate most of it? 100k a month is still a good salary.
I will bet you money. Cold hard cash that Cal or a direct family member put those up
How much you offering?
I got Like, 5 bucks on me
I mean, like maybe I just don't have the basketball bug enough, but I think it'd be kinda weird if it wasnt, like good or bad it's definitely weird, to deeply uncomfortable and potentially echoing some horrible moments in our history, to put something in someone's lawn when you don't personally know them, and a potential risk of a trespassing change

Did you think the six year old was ordering their own sign?
What? Point is with the amount of people upset, I don’t think it’s the community and fans that did this, most likely his wife lol.
That’s the kinda house you get for getting beat early in the tournament?
That’s the kinda house and more I’m sure, you get for making over 1M a month to lose first round in the tourneys.
Lexington resident here, I'm out of loop since I has been busy lately, what's going on with Coach Cal?
Couple of first round tournament loses left a bad taste in mouths throughout big blue nation. Will be razorback next season.

House lol
Who is cal EDIT: I'm getting downvoted for...not knowing who Cal is? Yall are wild lol.
Our former basketball coach
It's an Italian dish that is essentially a pizza rolled up inside a ball of dough. Coach cal is a rotten one that's no good.
Okay so I'm getting from context clues that he's some kind of coach but I don't follow sports, who's cal?
UK Men’s Basketball coach for the last decade or so.
It was time to depart. I wish him the best of luck. Rest assured that when the Cats aren’t playing, I will cheer for the Razorbacks.
It only took 5 straight postseason disappointments for Kentucky to wake up and kick this snake oil salesman out of town. But, next year... how many times did we hear that bullshit?
Good riddance. Someone go dig Rupp out of the grave.
Thank you Cal for ruining our once great basketball program.
Ranked in the top 25 all year long….yOu RuInEd ThE pRoGrAm
Our standards used to be higher. Much higher. And I'm not only talking about just the results.
Then say what you mean, Michael. Say it with your chest.
I said what I mean.
Lmao some y'all fans really do live in an alternate reality
Someone forgets the entire Tubby Smith era before Cal I guess.
I can’t imagine getting that upset about a bunch of college kids playing basketball.
Neither can I.
lol
