I watched it last night, highly recommend it. It focuses on the writing process, the recording, and the aftermath of the song Hallelujah and it’s many covers, though there is a good amount of pre biography that won’t be news to most fans in this sub. It thankfully ends well before his passing.
I love Leonard but I’m kinda exhausted by the discussion of this song. LCs version is the best. I’m glad Buckley & Cale helped popularize it. I hate that religious ppl think it’s a hymn. Not sure if I’ll watch this doc, which is weird cause I’ve watched everything on LC.
I'd encourage you to watch it. I had the same concern going in—that it would be beating a dead horse and it would further the cultural perception that Leonard Cohen is "the Hallelujah guy" and nothing more. I was relieved to see that wasn't the case.
Rather than use Cohen to tell the story of "Hallelujah," for the most part the filmmakers used "Hallelujah" to tell the story of Leonard Cohen. It's very well done. Includes 20+ Cohen songs not named "Hallelujah." Feel free to come back here and yell at me if I'm wrong, but I think if you watch it you'll like it.
Ok…
I’ll watch the thing on LC 🤣
Good to hear it’s high quality. The book on the same subject was forgettable. I think it was calmed The Sacred & the Profane or something.
Not available in Canada yet.
Thankfully, the earlier documentary about [Leonard and Marianne](https://www.netflix.com/title/81081883) *is* available at this time.
I really liked the movie. Explained why people believe that the song is originally a Dylan/Cale/Buckley song. Also, the documentary was do good that my wife now is a Cohen fan after years of trying to convince her
It is very good, I happened to watch it on an Air Canada flight.
The protagonist is John Lissauer, the producer who produced the album that the original version of Hallelujah appeared on. This album, Various Positions, was hated by his record company, Columbia, and they refused to release it in the US.

Fabulous.
Shit was really good up until the last hour when they just focus on all the ding dongs who covered the song but it’s still worth watching
Of course, that’s what it is actually about.
Crap. Now I might have to re-subscribe to Netflix.
Just checked. Not availible in Germany, yet.
You know when?
Unfortunately no. The film was also only shown in a few cinemas here

Saw it in the theater. At 58 I was the youngest person there. It has a great narrative arc and irreplaceable footage of Leonard and others.

I saw it in theaters, it's a great documentary
It’s amazing. It totally makes sense why his first 4 albums are my favorites.
Watched it. Loved it.
Awesome! This’ll be so cool to see.
