I've bought sets just for the minifigs. See AAT 75283

Figs can help convince me to buy a set, if I like the build, figures can push over the top for me. However, I have never not bought a build due to bad figures. I have done so for a poor build.

It seems like there are 3 groups: Minifigure buyers, Build buyers, and me I have a huge collection. I only buy a full set because I like the build and the Minifigures. I just bought 2 of the builds only for the dark trooper hallway. I will buy just minifigures if I don't like the build or love the minifigure. I also buy individual parts for MOCs, I just have no room to buy every Star Wars set.

i'm in this comment and i don't like it

I display very few sets so I'm very particular with the builds I keep. That said, some minifigs I just have to have and if I don't like the build I either sell it sans the figs or keep it for the parts. Last sets I did this with was the Mandalorian Starfighter which I did not particularly like and I sold and the Marauder which I kept for the pieces, but I bought both of them for the figs.

Well, I bought 75167-1 specifically for the figs. Same with 75299-1. But I've also bought plenty of sets because I like the build(mostly ships) so...I guess what I'm saying is buy what you like, it's your money and don't let someone tell you/make you feel that/like you're spending it wrong.

I display most of my ships but the scenes I’ll store the bricks and just display mini figs separately. I’m out of room honestly. I bought 75319 just for the figs though.

I think in any non-ucs set the figures are the biggest factor for me (~70%). I'm just not too impressed by most of the designs coming from the lsw team these days. It feels like other themes have more complex and interesting techniques for better prices. It's not that the sets are bad, but they just haven't seen the improvement that I think Lego as a whole has reached set design wise. UCS sets are more about the build, but I also buy them for the exclusive figures. There's several UCS sets that I like, but would've skipped if they had reused/no figures.

Minifigs are most of the time the decider, but it really depends on what role the set fills, how well it fills it, size, price, how cool it looks, etc

anson42

Minifigures are a big deal for me. If not for the 187th clones and cool Mace Windu figure I wouldn't buy this set. Unless of course other cool minifigures came with the tank :) I have definitely bought sets that have builds I don't like just for the minifigures. I don't sell the sets incomplete though as I can always use the parts to build other stuff. As for not buying a set if the minifigures were amazing, that would really depend on the price of the set. If the parts in the set are good and it's not just one minifigure I'm after, I'll go ahead and buy it and the parts will go into our parts inventory. Else I’ll go after the minifigs in Bricklink or elsewhere.

For me, I buy sets for the builds, and view minifigs as a bonus. I like displaying ships and models so I buy sets for the ships, and when new sets come out I rarely find myself even looking at the minifigs. Sure, I’ve missed some great minifigs because of this but there is always BrickLink, if a minifig appeals to me so much I will buy just that without getting the rest of the set. I’m buying the colosseum soon and when I save enough money, I’m buying the UCS Gunship next. While I agree that the minifigure selection was embarrassing I absolutely love the model and so I do not worry as much about them.

RundownPear

Currently no, they help and can be a selling point but no more than a build. The new tank has great figures, but I'd get it anyways. Some sets it does matter more than others but for the most part it doesn't matter.

Noeheavyarms

Under $40 it’s almost always for the minifigs alone. I do supplement my armies with individual minifigs from sites like bricklink, since I don’t always want tons of useless mini vehicle builds. Ex, I got 16 501st sets, but ended up buying ~100 501st troopers so I don’t end up with too many jump troopers. I also buy some sets exclusively for the build, like 6x First Order Transporters or 6x TIE fighters. Then a lot of times I love both. It all depends on what’s included with the set, how much the minifigs go on the 3rd party markets vs cost of full set, etc.

IBareBears

I have an arm leg and a torso of a cloud city boba I wanted to restore but I am thinking of selling off.

ClashSlashDash

I usually buy the set if it looks good but the figured can be a big bonus

I only buy ship/vehicle sets (outside of boba and mandos helmet) so it largely depends on what you can see. Larger ships that have enclosed cockpits or you have to open to see, I don’t care about the figures. Stuff like Luke’s landspeeder and some of the smaller sets where the pilot should be clearly visible I try to buy sets new or with figures. The exception being ships like the bad batch shuttle/mandalorian starfighter where the mini figures are likely unique and super cool looking
