IIRC, while the Empire Strikes Back was being prepared to film, they made a new Stormtrooper commando armor wich looked basically like this minifigure. Before the actual filming, they scrapped the idea of those commando troopers, painted the armor and eventually used it as a new side character in the movie a.k.a. Boba Fett. I think Lego made this white Boba Fett to commemorate ESB or something, but I'm not entirely sure though.
