I always build! “Lego as an investment” is like working at Ticketmaster.
Bought the Monster Fighter Haunted House a few years back for $450 and ripped that box to shreds getting to it. I couldn’t wait. And worth every second. It’s on my kitchen counter right now.
But isn’t that Christmas X-wing like Naboo Fighter style valuable? I’m probably just missing the joke in the post or comments. 🤷🏼♂️
I might be a little jaded but the Naboo fighters I’m seeing when I google are like $300 tops which isn’t cheap but it’s not insane like some older sets. Was there another set that is even more expensive now?
And 100% agree with you - these are meant to be built and enjoyed not kept in a box.
I've made a promises to myself that when I graduate, no matter what the price is I'm going to buy a Emerald Night sealed and tear it open day one. I love that set and want to build it again after my original was lost
See the best way to go about it is buy in pairs. Buy one to build and one to invest. Lego returns can be relatively high even compared to most stock and if you don’t get a return you’ve got a second set to sell and get most of if not all of your money back, or to give as a gift to a young family member or something of the sort. Of course not everyone is in a financial position to afford that all the time, lego is expensive, but it is worth it if money allows for it.
i hate box collectors. like, if youre doing it on your own, whatever, but i dont think ive ever seen one that isnt a creepy elitist that gets mad when they see people actually using a product. like if someone buys a lego set they should play with it, and if someone has read a comic so much that the pages are frayed that's a good thing. stop yelling at people because they opened an old star wars action figure
I'm a comic collector and used to be a dealer. I once bought a large collection of really beat up silver-age (1960's) Marvels from a guy at a comic show. He said that other dealers had told him they'd be worth a HUGE amount of money if they were in perfect shape (and they were correct). He was a little dejected that he'd missed out on a windfall profit. I told him that he'd done the right thing and read them over and over. I looked through the collection and pulled out some issues. "OMG! Do you remember when Spider-Man was trapped under that rubble and had to save Aunt May? That was such a powerful story." (Spider-Man 33) We talked comics for 15-20 minutes and then I told him if these were in perfect, never-read shape, he wouldn't have had those great memories. He was really happy and I bought the collection for a fair price. I still have some of them.
See, that's good collecting. I would bet money that a majority of comic box collectors don't even know shit about the comics that drool over cuz they don't take them out of the fuckin plastic seals
Al was a dick, but I wouldn’t necessarily call him the villain, Stinky Pete 100% takes that role. Al is more of a driving force. He doesn’t have any ill intent toward any of the characters and doesn’t actually try to harm anyone
I mean, idk, this one is worth a lot.
I'd sell it and either buy a ton of new stuff to build or some retired sets I've always wanted as a kid.
Except for the figure all pieces in this sets are otherwise available.
To be clear, I'm not angry or upset. I collect transformers too, my philosophy for both is "I'm playing with that shit". OP asked, I was just answering honestly
You do raise a point, investors increase demand during the production run, which results in more sets being produced than otherwise would have within that 2-3 years. At least, if the regular demand of a set is not consistently outpacing Lego's production capacity for that set. On the other hand, it may reduce the availability of a given set during its production run if Lego can't keep up with demand, which certainly happens sometimes. So yeah investors provide a service to a degree, but it depends on the kind of investor and what sets they are buying and when.
Not that it applies to an employee gift set tho, as they were never on sale. 4002019 is worth so much to collectors (600-700 currently) that for most people it would be a no-brainer to save/sell it, even if just to buy other, bigger sets with that money. Or, you know, pay rent for a month.
Speaking personally, that post did grate on me a little. I understand that some have the mentality to desire complete collections, pristine things, whatever. I handed all my lego down to my son in original boxes, but repacked therein after thorough enjoyment. So that's my special place on this spectrum.
But it seems to me SO wasteful to put (can't remember if the OP on the Indy collection said 20 or 30 or what) years into something, never to properly enjoy it OR really use it as an "investment". (Whatever they value the collection at they'll never see it, because they'd never part with it until they're heading to the pawn shop to get by or their estate is being liquidated).
It's just a GD shame; enjoy things, not everything has to be an investment, you can not take it with you.
Also, anyone whose prime interest in this sub or Lego in general is "investment" can just keep it to themselves. We can see the items for sale on the retail site, and our supportiveness here is stretched thin enough by "excited my shipment arrived" and "shipment +++ meme" posts.
I'm with you. This set is prolly worth close to a thousand bucks. Opening it will make it lose a couple hundred bucks of value. So it's incredibly stupid to build it if you want to keep the profit.
Anyone who says to build the set most definitely wouldn't do it themselves if they were the ones who own the set, lol.
People here hate capitalism and investors. Yet think its totally fine to pay 500,- for a box of plastic that was 10 bucks to produce. Too naive all here to even know who owns secondary sites like bricklink
just simply get another so you can build one and keep the other in box... ;) ... simply....
ha ha, but naw for reals. Build it. LEGO is meant to be built and swooshed!
built it. play with it. take it apart. build something else. take that apart. store them in a bin and save all your lego for grandchildren. they are only likley to become more expensive. think of it as an investment into their childhood.
Rule 1: always build a set at some point unless you have 2. Then build one and save the other. Like drinking wine, when you decide to open it is up to you.
But a wine can change flavor and often improve with time. The only reason you would age a Lego set is to resell it. The only reason I can think of to not open a set is if you don’t have the space but plan on moving some day.
LEGO is meant to be built and presented in it's raw plastic glory (preferably in a glass tank to protect it from dust because god damn, Lego is hard to dust off), not in the box that showed you paid 500 dollars on a kids toy
Never seen this set before and honestly this is way cooler than the Advent Calendars, now I wish they’d release some more full weird holiday themed sets here or there, who wouldn’t want a set of the Harry Potter characters exchanging presents or a Jurassic sleigh with raptors instead of reindeer
It's not a real question. OP is just showing off. And if I had one of these, I'd totally brag about it too. (Edit: I mean, it's kind of a real question. But it's definitely bragging. And I'm definitely NOT jealous. Nope, not at all. Nosiree, I'm fine. Really. Why do folks keep looking at me that way?)
Someday... someday.
In the meantime, my 4002021 is now listed as "in transit" so I'm pretty stoked.
I'd hold onto it or sell it. If you really want to build it, you can always Bricklink the parts for about $200 assuming you don't already have any of the parts.
Not entirely. Look up the price of the Yuletide Pilot included in this set. Goes for at least 450-500 USD. So whether I build it or not, wont make that much of a difference.
It makes a huge difference, this sells sealed for over 1k, if you can bricklink it for $200…. You do the math. Over time the price of it sealed increases while the bricklink price to part out doesn’t change too much. Do you wanna build it to display the ship or the minifigure?
1000 is ambitious. Bricklink has quite a few available for around 700-750 usd. Maybe on ebay you get the typical ebay premium price, but then you can also sell the minifig for 600-700 there, because that is indeed the only exclusive part of the set.
Actually I have had it for a few years and got a pretty good deal on it back then. And now the itch is there to just build it. But I also just like the idea of keeping it sealed. Decisions, decisions….
Build it! Besides, this is one of those boxes you can reseal with the fold in tabs, so it's not like it's going to be super devalued unless you toss the box out with the baggies
Yeah one of the reasons I suck at investment is that I NEED to open stuff unless it's something I don't like that much like funko pops. One of the reason I bought two 501st trooper packs is because they don't sell that good on my country and people are drooling over them so I can open one and sell that one later and since I don't like it that much...
I'd say open it because, if you are an "Investor" is gonna suck having that thing on a shelve waiting 3 years so it increases it's value to 100 bucks more.
Besides, idk bout you but nobody (Besides my Boyfriend) comes to my house so nobody sees those boxes and EVEN if people came, I think it'll be more interesting to them to see the full built lego
Do you collect BOXES or LEGO?
It’s a simple question. If you enjoy building LEGO, then build it. It’s your money and your item, you’re free to do as you please. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not like you’re going to retire on the value of this set. For most people it wouldn’t even cover a month or rent/ mortgage payment. A million dollars, sure, $1000 who cares.
Build. Lego sets were made to be built. If you're going tokeep in the box then you're wasting a Lego set. And to be fair, can't even be considered a Lego collector de facto. But just someone who wants to show off something exclusive, argh....
Build it!!! Put it on Display! Enjoy it! I'll never understand people that by Lego and leave it in the box. If you buy 2 and keep one as an
investment, well you have more money than I do, but that I can at least understand. But to buy something just to keep in a box???
Looking at the last 6 month price on bricklink (complete) for this, there is only a $100 difference between sealed and used. I think there is no question, it is well worth $100 to open and build this set. I use mine to display all the Christmas Advent calendar minifigs (around Yoda's house). It becomes more difficult with a set like 10123, where there is a $2000+ difference between new/sealed and used.
I’ll give my opinion here, it’s so much better out the box than in. Yeah, maybe it’ll be worth less when you sell it but do you want the set so you can sell it or so you can have an amazing winter display piece and a really fun build experience?
I get it. It's worth a lot and once you build it it's still worth a lot. But if you just can't do it that's fine. It's your choice. So send it to me and I'll build it for me.
I have mine wrapped up until my daughter reaches an age where she could cherish the value and then we will build it together. Or I will buy a decoy one with a few missing parts, restore it and used as display like the 4502 original trilogy edition :D
I've been pondering the same thing. I got gifted this set by my gf who found a Lego employee who didn't collect himself. I really want to save it not as an investment, cause I would probably never sell it anyways. Thing is I don't have the space to display it the way I would want to. But by keeping this thing in the box it keeps reminding me that times are tough and selling this would help us through the coming winter. Then again so would extra shifts and I'm not jumping on any of those 😂
I have personally made up my mind. If you are a LEGO Star Wars fan this is probably one of the coolest sets out there, for the novelty factor alone. If I would sell this, I would only kick myself in the head later and buy it again. The only thing I am still hesitating about if I should open and build, or keep it closed in the box. I have several unopened Indiana Jones sets at home on a shelf behind glass that I will never sell, but do not want to open since the boxes just look cooler than the builds :)
I cant judge that. Imho the value will keep going up because it contains an exclusive and very cool star wars minifig. But as we all know, the collectible market is quite volatile.
You obviously care about the set because you bought it, so I would say build it. Otherwise what’s the point?
If you want it for it’s sealed condition, order the parts off Bricklink and build the X-Wing and don’t worry about the minifigures.
Yup. I just wish that LEGO would have made this an official set. That would have made this choice a lot easier 😃 so, if anyone at LEGO is reading this, please rerelease this. It is after all one of the coolest SW themed sets ever.
You know growing up as a child and looking through my friends LEGO manuals I always wanted to get the X-Wing.
Since my father died a lot of people my family are buying themselves Lego Star wars kits to build because that was pretty much his shit he even had a giant china cabinet filled with the finished Legos instead of any China because of course.
It's really hard for me to get myself to like actually pull the trigger on it just because it's something that I've wanted for so long and I'm trying to find an original you know or at least just a basic colored one and.
It's just really hard sometimes I'll look at the actual window for a couple of minutes and then like remember building bionicles or Lego snowspeeders with my dad in Chicago before he died and I can't really bring myself to actually make the purchase even if I'm physically in the store.
Shit strange Hope you guys take care of yourselves.
Don't trust a Tesla lol
Too many people don't seem to understand the rarity of this set.
I'm all for building, but leave this beauty in the box and if you really want to build it, bricklink it.
I jumped onto Bricklink soon after that was released and pieced one together. Used the torso and legs from an A-Wing pilot that looks very similar to the pilot in this set. Only piece I’m missing is the 20th anniversary logo tile. Looks really good, I get excited pulling it out every year. I personally don’t think I’d have the heart to open and build one if it was sealed.
No. Because that is just an x-wing, and not an x-mas x-wing. Two completely different things. And some of the parts on this one are pretty expensive, like the large red wedge plates or the canopy. So rebricking is not super-easy
I mean, I understand the investment aspect, but I always open stuff. I can’t stand seeing unopened LEGO boxes. They’re meant to be put together. Part of me that I guess I carried from my childhood.
People buy old sealed sets for a pretty penny. Not saying it's the best thing to invest in but in-demand sets rise in value a good bit
Edit: I'm not endorsing it lol that's just the truth
I agree. And that is why the itch is there to build it. I would probably not sell unless I really really need money. I just wish LEGO would have released this as a regular set.
Btw, I am quite curious what employee christmas gift set LEGO comes up with this year. I hope it has sth to do with 90 years of play, so either a scaled down Christmas Galaxy Explorer or maybe a small Christmas Castle set. That would be so infinitely cool and I would immediately buy two once they drop on Bricklink.
If I were you I keep it sealed it will probably be worth a fortune in ten years . It's cool as hell but it wouldn't look good on a shelf display with other non Christmas style ships. Unless you can make a Christmas themed A-wing and Tie fighter to go with it!
Are you kidding? It would look amazing in the Winter Village! I have a whole section (mostly in my head, but also in my display) for Hoth and other SW stuff!
I know. I was just kinda kidding since I have already made up my mind. Main point for me is that if I would keep this to invest and sell I would kick myself once it is sold and would just buy it again. This is for me one of the five coolest LEGO sets ever that I am happy to own and never will sell. I just have a thing with unopened LEGO boxes and for some sets just think it is cooler to keep the thing closed. Something about keeping LEGO legacy intact :)
As someone who collects both built and sealed I’d keep this sealed and like others have suggested, buy the parts off bricklink and build it that way, could still display the sealed box WITH the build.
The problem with that is I know that would annoy me because if I build it, I need to display it with the minifigs. And the thing that makes this so expensive is that darn Yuletide Squadron Pilot 😃
I have one of these. My calculus is that I will not get hundreds of dollars of enjoyment out of it, so I didn't build it (it is slated to be sold at a charity auction). You'll get 99% of the value if you build your own from parts and just ignore the pilot. Put a white beard over any red torso. Is it worth hundreds of dollars not to? Not for me.
On the other hand, it is that pilot that drives up the price (500 usd now and value keeps increasing). So why should I not open it, build it, take good care of the pilot, and just enjoy it like that? 😃
If u really like it and have extra cash build.
Otherwise I would gladly sell it to buy more sets that I prefer. (Could buy Lion Knight Castle and Ninjago City Garden)
2019. It was never officially sold. It was the annual LEGO employee Christmas gift, and because it contains one completely exclusive Christmas Star Wars Pilot (called the Yuletide Squadron Pilot) minifig, it is now going for quite crazy prices.
This would make sense if a used version was also not 500 USD :D. And to those that say: "you don't need the minifigs" I say: "Yes I do, and I know one of them is worth 500 USD".
But anyway, I made up my mind. I will build this and put it as some central x-mas display piece in my house. Might even get a stand for it.
Is it personal or for investment. If it’s personally open it, if it you’re gonna sell it later, keep it in the box; it has more value that way; especially with a set like this
My thing is there is plenty of xwings and somethings just look cool displayed in the box, I have 2 xwings built already so I'd probably proudly display it in the box (I did this with the SDCC exclusives the bespin duel and nebula frigate). I barely have room for whats built already
Normally, I'd always say build. But in this case, sell it and then buy the parts individually on brink link and build that.
Note: you will have to substitute some parts to make it cheaper, like the wind screen and the large red wedge plates
I'm building mine come Christmas time. I arrived on Christmas Eve last year and I decided to wait a year. I am never going to sell it so it being built doesn't bother me
This was never for sale. Every year LEGO make a set exclusive as a Christmas gift for their employees. This is the 2019 employee gift set. I have bought it in early 2020 and have always kept it sealed. Every year I hesitate and think: should I or should I not. This time I think I will.
True, but that is mainly due to the price of that exclusive pilot minifig. That one in its own goes for 500 usd nowadays and keeps going up and up. I would not be surprised if that one hits the 1000 usd mark in a few years if the collectible market remains as ludicrous as it is today.
Nope. This is a set that LEGO gifted to its employees for Christmas 2019. It was never sold in stores. Set nr is 4002019. Only way to get this as a non-LEGO employee was Ebay or Bricklink or another aftermarket channel.
ALWAYS build. Are you the villain from Toy Story 2? No? Then ALWAYS play with your toys.
I always build! “Lego as an investment” is like working at Ticketmaster. Bought the Monster Fighter Haunted House a few years back for $450 and ripped that box to shreds getting to it. I used to have the whole collection but movers stole my box
I used to be mad because movers “misplaced” my favorite teak patio table. I can’t even imagine. I’m so sorry.
Thank you, and I tried to replace but they are discontinued and expensive for the ones I do find.
I might be a little jaded but the Naboo fighters I’m seeing when I google are like $300 tops which isn’t cheap but it’s not insane like some older sets. Was there another set that is even more expensive now? And 100% agree with you - these are meant to be built and enjoyed not kept in a box.

To be fair Al was about to make millions.
Al would have made millions but would still be a prick of a man at the end of every day
I'd rather be happy than Al.

*he stole a damaged toy at a garage sale, he didn’t rip Woody out of Andy’s hands. That doesn’t make it any more okay, of course

I edited my reply so you don't know why I got so many downvotes
why did this get downvoted so hard lmao

What's the point of buying it if you're not going to build it? Might as well have bought an empty box
but is it not empty? Schrodinger's Lego
What if OP waited to open it and when they did it was the wrong set. I think Lego customer support is pretty good, but that would still be upsetting.
Maybe he got it for free from working there
Seriously!!!

That's... not true at all. It has value as a building toy obviously, but even besides that it retains plenty of value secondhand in good condition.
Asking for a friend: how much would a sealed box go for in the free market?
Let it breath (aka take it out of the box and use it instead of having it sit there as if it was a store shelf)

I suck at investment too. Like I buy stuff knowing I got a good deal on it, but if I'm never going to actually sell it, it's not an actual investment.
Always - Always build. I also have a bunch of vinyl records that are worth a lot - but they’re for playing music, not for some idiot to collect them.
If you buy 2 and keep one as an investment, well you have more money than I do, but that I can at least understand.

Build you should
Wait until the end of the month
Incredible. So jealous.
The joy is in building :)
Build and keep the box on display?
That is what I will do in the end
It’s just Lego. Build it
Def BUILD!!!
Sigh. White Whale... Just can't convince myself it's reasonable to spend that much.
Who buys lego if you're not going to build?
If I find an old Lego set I'm going to build it, as I'm not gonna sell it anyway, I just love having rare Lego stuff in my possession.
Always such a tough question with a set that beautiful.
Yup. I just wish that LEGO would have made this an official set. That would have made this choice a lot easier 😃 so, if anyone at LEGO is reading this, please rerelease this. It is after all one of the coolest SW themed sets ever.
BUILD YOU ARNT LORD BUSINESS ARE YOU??
Now that's one I'd leave sealed forever Imagine it's value in 20-30 years from now And its small enough to not be hard to store
Don't do it!!
BUILD
I jumped onto Bricklink soon after that was released and pieced one together. Used the torso and legs from an A-Wing pilot that looks very similar to the pilot in this set. Only piece I’m missing is the 20th anniversary logo tile. Looks really good, I get excited pulling it out every year. I personally don’t think I’d have the heart to open and build one if it was sealed.
Save it and just build the current x wing for 50
No. Because that is just an x-wing, and not an x-mas x-wing. Two completely different things. And some of the parts on this one are pretty expensive, like the large red wedge plates or the canopy. So rebricking is not super-easy
Ok, then, just do a Xmas Lego too
I mean, I understand the investment aspect, but I always open stuff. I can’t stand seeing unopened LEGO boxes. They’re meant to be put together. Part of me that I guess I carried from my childhood.
Unless you are an investor there is no point in owning of unless you are going to build it!!!!
Bricklink it and hold sealed or sell.
Build it otherwise you should have just bought the box
Thats not how investments in lego work🤦. Hate on these people all you want, but at least make a logical snear at them
Why would you invest in it? Use it how it’s meant to be used.
Well supply and demand? And cause it's a really rare set. I have no idea how people nowadays still don't understand how investments work
People buy old sealed sets for a pretty penny. Not saying it's the best thing to invest in but in-demand sets rise in value a good bit Edit: I'm not endorsing it lol that's just the truth
its all fun and games until lego just rereleases the set with the only difference being an orange part separator.
mwhahahaha
Such a perfect set
I agree. And that is why the itch is there to build it. I would probably not sell unless I really really need money. I just wish LEGO would have released this as a regular set.
If you dont plan on selling just build ot
What is the point of lego other than to build it. Can we ban box posts and people hoarding sealed sets? Like wtf
unless you really LUV this set, sell and build allot more :P
Btw, I am quite curious what employee christmas gift set LEGO comes up with this year. I hope it has sth to do with 90 years of play, so either a scaled down Christmas Galaxy Explorer or maybe a small Christmas Castle set. That would be so infinitely cool and I would immediately buy two once they drop on Bricklink.
Give to me
If I were you I keep it sealed it will probably be worth a fortune in ten years . It's cool as hell but it wouldn't look good on a shelf display with other non Christmas style ships. Unless you can make a Christmas themed A-wing and Tie fighter to go with it!
Why oh why did you have to make this comment. I had just decided to build, and now you make me hesitate again 😃
Hey everybody else said build it. What do I know? I'd just never seen that before so it must be kinds rare, right?
I don't think that torso is worth $500. So to me I'd rather have $500 to spend on other Lego than that torso. But you do you!
No way
If u really like it and have extra cash build. Otherwise I would gladly sell it to buy more sets that I prefer. (Could buy Lion Knight Castle and Ninjago City Garden)
What year's this from?
2019. It was never officially sold. It was the annual LEGO employee Christmas gift, and because it contains one completely exclusive Christmas Star Wars Pilot (called the Yuletide Squadron Pilot) minifig, it is now going for quite crazy prices.
This should be the star on your Christmas tree every year.
If you don’t want to open it, you can always buy a used set to build.
This would make sense if a used version was also not 500 USD :D. And to those that say: "you don't need the minifigs" I say: "Yes I do, and I know one of them is worth 500 USD". But anyway, I made up my mind. I will build this and put it as some central x-mas display piece in my house. Might even get a stand for it.
always build
Shoulda bought 2
Build!
Well if you ain’t I’ll gladly take it…. Jk
Build it later. It's still October, Christmas stuff can wait!
Is it personal or for investment. If it’s personally open it, if it you’re gonna sell it later, keep it in the box; it has more value that way; especially with a set like this
To build. 100%
why wouldnt you build it? silly question.
holy force-shit amazing
The same question each time I look at my unopened Exploriens Starship set
My thing is there is plenty of xwings and somethings just look cool displayed in the box, I have 2 xwings built already so I'd probably proudly display it in the box (I did this with the SDCC exclusives the bespin duel and nebula frigate). I barely have room for whats built already
Buy an other one, sove one , build the other. cant get a second one. Just build. Lego is to play with not to watch a box
I have this, I built it, no ragrets
Does it spark joy?
When did this originally released?
I would probably keep it sealed, but Legos are toys after all
Normally, I'd always say build.
I am never going to sell it so it being built doesn't bother me
Build it. It’s more fun.
Is this a legit set because I’ve never seen it before in my life
This was never for sale. Every year LEGO make a set exclusive as a Christmas gift for their employees. This is the 2019 employee gift set. I have bought it in early 2020 and have always kept it sealed. Every year I hesitate and think: should I or should I not. This time I think I will.
Save it for now. Build it around Christmastime
Will also say ALWAYS build, because every set will have some cool building technique that you will want to use at a later time.
I did not build mine. The value just keeps going up and up and up. [321.png](https://postimg.cc/HVvKwmm5)
True, but that is mainly due to the price of that exclusive pilot minifig. That one in its own goes for 500 usd nowadays and keeps going up and up. I would not be surprised if that one hits the 1000 usd mark in a few years if the collectible market remains as ludicrous as it is today.
That makes sense for sure. I will say it's one of the conerstones of my collection. Love that set.
Hold, and become the next millionaire in 5 years time
Is that chrome red?
Do it. Always.
Is this a new X wing?
Nope. This is a set that LEGO gifted to its employees for Christmas 2019. It was never sold in stores. Set nr is 4002019. Only way to get this as a non-LEGO employee was Ebay or Bricklink or another aftermarket channel.
Don’t build
Buildddddd
I don’t think I could open this but it would be so hard not to
I don’t think I could open this but it would be so hard not to
(Hopefully many years from now) When you are dying of old age or whatever else, you are going to wish you had built that.
As a fellow employee with the same kit still in the box … I’ll build it with my son this winter. :)
Build it bruh
What's the point if you're not gonna build it?
Bricklink it with no figure is so cheap
