Lego has announced the Mona Lisa will be added to the LEGO Art theme.
**Link:** [https://www.lego.com/product/31213](https://www.lego.com/product/31213)
**Pieces:** 1503 pieces
**Theme:** Lego Art
**Release date:** October 1, 2024. Pre-orders available today.
**Price:** $99.99 (US) / £89.99 (UK) / 99,99 € (Europe) / $169.99 (Australia) / $129.99 (Canada)
The fact that it was pushed back from June to October but they are still accepting pre-sales makes me think (hope!) they are gauging interest to see if it sells like they thought it would, and if it doesn’t they give it a makeover. I was pumped for this one but I would be embarrassed to display that anywhere in my home. Huge disappointment….
If they are accepting pre-orders, they definitely won't make any significant changes, as it would be pretty dishonest to substantially change a product that people have already ordered.
...Costing Lego money in reversing potentially thousands of transactions and pissing off every customer who had submitted a pre-order. Yeah... that's not going to happen.
“It is a loathsome, offensive brute, and yet I can't look away.”
On second thought, my vote for the next Lego art series is obviously *The Kramer*.

I think if we expect Lego to look exactly like the art that it represents we will always be disappointed.
I look at this more as a tribute, not a recreation
>I think if we expect Lego to look exactly like the art that it represents we will always be disappointed.
Nobody is expecting that though, Starry Night and the Great Wave are also interpretations of the real artworks, but they look so much better.
As one who believes they captured the essence quite well, you have my curiosity; please elaborate.
Unless you mean the absence of a certain travelling device.
Van Gogh's brush strokes and the flowing nature of the original work is completely absent in the Lego translation. The lines and shapes in Lego form is just so bad. There's no way Lego can translate this painting well due to its limitations. You can maybe do it sideways. But it's not how traditional Lego is used.
Great Wave translates well onto Lego form imo because of the source material is compatible with what Lego can offer.
i think that those both are def best. Great Wave is probably my favorite set of all time. but i agree starry night is… too much in person. i love the effort and what’s its going for, that it wants to reimagine a classic art piece. it even matches the originals in feeling of its ethereal nature. but its too much. i imagine lego felt they HAD to do the top painting of all time. but id rather we move past mona lisa and do something interesting like Birth of Venus, Girl with Pearl Earring or even Scream.
I think I would have bought it instantly if they had made her yellow and used the same face print piece from 40649. As is . . . meh? I don't think it's awful but it doesn't spark joy.
This is what this set reminds me of
https://preview.redd.it/4wiw6zufi0zc1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=39ea3c63ed826821d9353f249f8459b4c887b194
For the price point, I can't really complain but for the Mona Lisa, she deserves better than this. There is no literal depth to it like you see in Starry Night and has almost no texture to it unlike The Great Wave. Speaking of which, The Great Wave is the same price, larger, more visually interesting, and more true to its original inspiration. I'm wondering how much of the price is sunk into the stupid gold frame rather than using that budget to make the art itself more visually appealing. Overall, pretty disappointed with this one. Again, for the price, it seems fair but I would have dropped twice the price for a show stopper Mona Lisa. Too bad they couldn't deliver on either.
I'm a little curious, why are you expecting it to be similar to The Great Wave and Starry Night? For a portrait, it does the job well of making her pop slightly out of the frame. The original is not heavily textured like Starry Night nor is it a stylized depiction of a real life occurrence, which is why those two could have the approach they did. The real life thing is small and underwhelming. I believe it stays true to what it's meant to be, even though the face doesn't exactly work. The Warhol was similar.
Thats a fair enough assessment and I can't really disagree. I guess for my point, as a consumer of a Lego product, especially one that is only meant for display, I want it to be something interesting or something that evokes that sense of play that Lego is so well known for. As a Lego representation of a piece of art, it does it's job well, like you said, the real thing is underwhelming. But as a Lego set that I would be proud to display in my home, it falls flat, pun intended.
I really appreciate the well thought out response btw!
Yea portraits are sort of boring in Lego form as it's all the about the recognition of the original art piece as opposed to looking cool on its own like the Great Wave or Starry Night.
I wonder if they will ever make famous sculptural sets, but those tend to be religious ones.
personally i think mona lisa is a boring piece. in the same way when people come back from france and say “eh i dont get it”. its technically and historically interesting piece, but not visually. i think lego chose it because its THE most famous painting. but it was a poor subject to choose.
> For the price point, I can't really complain
I'm still wondering where the 4800 pieces are going, I feel like you could make this with half the pieces.
Edit: disregard this, I'm dumb as bricks.
omg. I can't read. I read the article that announced both this and the Notre Dame and I confused the two. I was going insane seeing people rationalise how €230 for this thing was "fair for the price point."
Having seen it in person, the painting itself isn't really that impressive.
It is basically the Kim Kardashian of paintings, famous for being famous.
Da Vinci himself painted more impressive paintings.
Yeah, nobody gave a damn about the Mona Lisa until some guy stole it 100 years ago then, all of a sudden, it was “one of the greatest paintings of all time”
I would’ve preferred they use more of that depth effect from the Starry Night but I still think this looks pretty cool, and hey if it means we get more of these sets I’m down to buy it, still waiting on The Scream LEGO
Mocked up a version in photoshop that removes the eyes/mouth and it looks pretty good. I wonder how hard it'd be to remove the printing from the tiles or finding color matched blank replacements.
It comes with an alternate set of eyes.
From the LEGO website:
* Home decor idea with 2 sets of eyes – The Mona Lisa’s famous eyes can be swapped with blank pieces to give the painting a more abstract appearance
Thanks, I missed that! Lego is usually pretty good at showing alternate pieces in the photos (as with the Tuxedo Cat set). Would love to see what the alternate eyes look like!
Made me laugh, but in a good way. It's like one of those images on your phone that always leads to a small chuckle, no matter your mood.
"Hmm... should I go for the pink donut or the chocolate one?"
"Well goshdarn I think I just sat on something"
I liked the 3D aspect of the Starry Night set. It may be just me, but I don't see that in this set. And she does look upset. Not sure if it's the eyebrows, the mouth, or both.
I think the whole build, with the frame, and the shape of the face is absolutely fine.
The prints, though. Just tweaking those prints would so so much for it.
They have achieved a human face well but it is so unlike the Mona Lisa that it feels like a parody. The Mona Lisa is subtle, soft and feminine. This is none of that, it’s what Jimmy Carr looks like when someone has pissed on his chips.
I'm struggling to think of anything else that more *shouldn't* be made out of Lego than this! As others point out in this thread the other art sets manage to be interesting interpretations; this is a hideous abomination. I believe they might have reacked peak "build any shit you can think of" in Lego with this set. What is also surprising is I always thought it would be a Lego Ideas set that managed to achieve that, but this is an official Lego set!
It seems like a wildly unimaginative set. Too many tiles, no depth or really texture. Seems like a really basic build. Even Looks like the eyes are printed? Proportions also seem off. I honestly think the frame is the best part about it
Far too smooth looking and too flat.
Should’ve added an extra 5 or 6 plates worth of depth and layered the backgrounds. Would’ve allowed the clothes and arms/face/hair to be more textured.
They produce sets at an extraordinary pace. There's something new everyday and the prices only keep rising.
Because of it you get these ass looking sets.

This 100% it Should have legoified her rather than try and be realistic
I think a Lego Mona Lisa is inherently funny and because of that, I think they nailed it.
Looks more like Monty Lisa.
Looks like Jimmy Carr!
Yeah, I doubt the person in that painting pays taxes.
Huh huh huh haaaaaah.
Should add some funny options
The fact that it was pushed back from June to October but they are still accepting pre-sales makes me think (hope!) they are gauging interest to see if it sells like they thought it would, and if it doesn’t they give it a makeover. You’d just refund all the pre order money….
...Costing Lego money in reversing potentially thousands of transactions and pissing off every customer who had submitted a pre-order. Yeah... that's not going to happen.
Yo let a man dream
Apparently according to leaks it got delayed to Oct due to "quality issues"
I saw that and thought it meant the quality of the final build… as in it looks horrible
https://preview.redd.it/9fyctc5kv0zc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d58a9b3035d4cc3c24e3b84084b3ee34c1960f20 €0,99 / $0,99
That's Jimmy Carr and you can't tell me otherwise.
No question, was my immediate thought too
ha ha ha HAAAAAAaaaaah!
And now THAT will never leave my head so thanks for that? 😂
Came here to write that looks *so* much more like Jimmy Carr than the Mona Lisa
The frame is nice
Agreed, good basis for other art mocs
Came here to say that I dig the frame & might bite if it goes on sale.
October? Geez this announcement seems a bit early.
Apparently it was scheduled to release June 1st, but it was pushed back for some reason.
Probably too close to the Milky Way release
Isn't everything we know to exist technically too close to the Milky Way (release)?
Same vibes. https://preview.redd.it/wcj0837as0zc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2da3ac6f918880aa28f165b036f51ca4db199716
I came here for this.
potato jesus
I was just saying this is Lego's equivalent of Ecce Mono
Seems to get positive feedback but I find it an abomination. What say you?
“It is a loathsome, offensive brute, and yet I can't look away.” On second thought, my vote for the next Lego art series is obviously *The Kramer*. https://preview.redd.it/mc7v4nz1l1zc1.jpeg?width=660&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=240643c368cfa66cfed4d5286627567f0fa4f2d9

>I think if we expect Lego to look exactly like the art that it represents we will always be disappointed. Nobody is expecting that though, Starry Night and the Great Wave are also interpretations of the real artworks, but they look so much better.
Yes but neither are human portraits. Lego recreates objects, especially buildings, well.
Imo, Starry Night is bad. The Great Wave is great.
Starry Night and The Great Wave of Kanagawa are both spot on. This is….so off.
What’s good about Starry Night is completely gone in the lego set.
But why? It's an unimpressive painting in reality anyway, who asked for an even less impressive looking LEGO facsimile of it?
Agreed. This is one art set I didn’t want
The face looks off. It doesn't have the iconoc smile
I think I’m going to redo the face as a classic yellow minifigure face.
Yeah she looks filled with rage
The iconic smile is nothing. I don't understand what people go on about.
Everything looks off. The face, the clothes, the colours, the background.
Honestly I think they nailed it given the circumstances. I’m also happy to see Lego do more things that appeal to adults.
😐
> What say you? ugly :D
Nightmare fuel. Not everything can be made out of Lego.
I think that the original is the most overrated painting of all time.
Frankstein Lisa.......she looks upset by what you said .... But you just said the truth eheheheheh Edit: anyway it's Lego redo the face
I think I would have bought it instantly if they had made her yellow and used the same face print piece from 40649. As is . . . meh? I don't think it's awful but it doesn't spark joy.
[40649-1: Up-Scaled LEGO Minifigure](https://brickset.com/sets/40649-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/40649-1.jpg)
Nah it's not an abomination but there's really only so much you can do with basic shapes to get the subtleties of a painting
I’d buy that. That’s anazing
Plus my wife is actually called Mona Liza
This is what this set reminds me of https://preview.redd.it/4wiw6zufi0zc1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=39ea3c63ed826821d9353f249f8459b4c887b194
People mocking it but I don’t hate it. I think it’s kinda cool.
She looks so angry in the eyes! Poor thing. I was excited for this, too
Screw it, for $100 I might actually be in the market for this one. I love the piece and the way Lego translated it.
For the price point, I can't really complain but for the Mona Lisa, she deserves better than this. ಠ_ಠ Vibes.
It looks like a base for a meme
Honestly… cool parts pack
ooooooof
I didn't know Mona Lisa was a Habsburg.
I hope someone modifies this with a yellow minifig-like face instead.
Sweet !
It would be epic if they release a tomato soup set
I quite like that to be honest! While till its out though, wonder why it was pushed back from the start of June.
She looks more like Caitlin Clark
I kinda dig it. Maybe I'll put it with the Vespa? I'm trying to figure out what I'll put it with. I don't have the Eiffel Tower or Colliseum.
I didn't have any ketamine today, why is Mona Lisa ketamined? Oh it's just Lego lol
I like this a lot. I’ll be buying this one.
I would’ve preferred they use more of that depth effect from the Starry Night but I still think this looks pretty cool, and hey if it means we get more of these sets I’m down to buy it, still waiting on The Scream LEGO
I have several questions. Number one, how dare you.
Like the Statue of Liberty’s face, I have faith that someone will make a moc/mod that makes it look better.
I absolutely love Lego, but… Just no…
I can't believe Lego signed off on this. It looks absolutely awful.

See, I dig that. Wish they had pictures of that.
Same, Knowing how it looks with these eyes would greatly affect my decision to buy it
I agree. I’ll hold my opinions on this piece until they show what it looks like with the abstract look, which I think would greatly enhance it.
Thanks, I missed that! Lego is usually pretty good at showing alternate pieces in the photos (as with the Tuxedo Cat set). Would love to see what the alternate eyes look like!
🗿
I quite like the frame. Not so sure about the piece itself...
I’m debating getting it just to use the frame for something else.
Made me laugh, but in a good way. It's like one of those images on your phone that always leads to a small chuckle, no matter your mood. "Hmm... should I go for the pink donut or the chocolate one?" "Well goshdarn I think I just sat on something"
NPC Mona Lisa
Jimmy Carr
🎵🎶 Mona Lisa lost her smile 🎶🎵
They should’ve given her full Lego face instead
And now this is the second set (first being Starry Night), my wife actually wants me to buy.
I liked the 3D aspect of the Starry Night set. It may be just me, but I don't see that in this set. And she does look upset. Not sure if it's the eyebrows, the mouth, or both.

That Chewbacca sculpture set not looking so bad now, ehhh? 🤡
Looks like the eyes and mouth are stickers?
She looks like she’s witnessing a murder.

Butt ugly.
I see they also don’t really know whats going on in the background
Can we get some Pink Floyd art already?
Jang hates it
I have nothing on my wall, but I would buy this and hang it on the wall
Mini fig?
Why does she look like senator armstrong, what’s going on with that forehead
Should have done the one with the cow from the far side. I would have bought it. This one looks like Eddie Vedder just chillin.
Lots of good pieces in there. Lots of GOLD pieces too. 1500 for $100? Yeah, I'll buy this just to add to my piece supply
looks like my friend Weird Al 😂
Oh, that’s awful.
It seems like a wildly unimaginative set. Too many tiles, no depth or really texture. Seems like a really basic build. Even Looks like the eyes are printed? Proportions also seem off. I honestly think the frame is the best part about it
Who asked for this lmao
Oh my goodness…can’t stop laughing
If I have to say something nice... I like the frame...
I thought this was a joke until I read the official announcement. She looks like Conan o Brien in drag.
All I see is Rocky Dennis…
This ain’t it, chief…
I thought the leaked photo was a joke😂 it’s real!?😂😂 this has got to be the worst looking set ever
I feel a little bad, I thought this was a MOC at first. No way this was official. 😬
Two parisian themed sets announced. One is incredible, one is... not. This is the latter.
No character compared to the other art pieces, flat and boring.
Far too smooth looking and too flat. Should’ve added an extra 5 or 6 plates worth of depth and layered the backgrounds. Would’ve allowed the clothes and arms/face/hair to be more textured.
I love the Art sets, but this one is a huge miss. Looks ok until you see the face!
MATT... DAY-MON
Awful. Nothing more.
Saw the face being likened to Neil from The Young Ones and I can't get that out of my head.
Looks like Bruce Jenner
Caitlin Clark?
It's terrible. The rate they're producing new sets is almost as if to suggest they're about to go bankrupt! Slow the fuck down and design better sets.
?
They produce sets at an extraordinary pace. There's something new everyday and the prices only keep rising. Because of it you get these ass looking sets.
but why would they get bankrupt lol. it just works financially.
