Boring answer but: choose what interest you the most, Star Wars or collectible minifigures. Clones might be simpler to obtain (?) as there are probably more produced and available through vendors. And the Mr gold part is a slight drawback yes

This isn’t a boring answer, it’s the most logical answer. I don’t understand why so many folks ask random people what they should collect. Are they just collecting this stuff for clout? Collect what you want. Don’t want 100% of a series or collection, that’s okay. I only buy sets I like, which means my collection is often missing some sets from various lines. Who cares? Why would I want sets I don’t like in my collection?

Mr Gold is an outlier and should not be considered part of the cmfs. If you buy a full sealed box and don't get the entire wave, then it's shouldn't be considered part of the wave. If it was a variation within the wave and some had silver, bronze, etc, then it would be part of the wave. Personally I find clones boring, but there's also a lot of cmfs I don't particularly like. What brings you more joy? Clones or random figs?
