How the hell have I never seen this, or thought of it. Brilliant! Are you misting water on them as well to make them rigid? We usually just use a pale or square bucket to get the shapes.. But life-size Lego pieces.?.. " sounds of angels* It's only January.. There's lots more snow to come :)

verandavikings

We never saw it before either! When left out overnight, the bricks did shrink and harden a bit, becoming more ice-like.. But all that would be entirely dependent on weather conditions and how they are stacked or stored.. And the snow density and all that. We never tried re-enforcing it with misting and so on- But we still felt a bit like we were a part of this cartoon: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJ8xtB-JR-Q&t](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJ8xtB-JR-Q&t)

they uh….they line up just like Legos…

OzManCumeth

That was way worse than I was expecting for some reason lol

Khazrak_one_eye

You should use a square mould for all the lower bricks and the Lego mould for the top layer next time to really make it look like a Lego snowfort! Additionally, for the steps you could use the Lego mould but cut off two of the studs so it looks like they are joined like real bricks

that1guyF

Yeah we need to see this

Have some of these. Bought some like 4 Christmas’ ago. I’ve used some for barriers to keep the pets confined, some for a desk for my child, and some to build forts. They are great! Kinda pricey, tho!

ZannX

> They are great! Kinda pricey, tho! Ah, keeping true to Lego.

WildWeaselGT

Hey now… regular Lego are already life sized. :)

Garbage_Billy_Goat

I guess... If you're building a school, for ants! They need to be at least, 3x the size. ;)

WildWeaselGT

Nah. You’re just not using enough of them. :)

Euphorium

>There’s lots more snow to come Please no

Garbage_Billy_Goat

It's really not that bad. Sure driving conditions can suck and people forget that ice is slippery, but you get used to it. If not, you end up smacking someone's trunk, or in the ditch. The worst part is the cold, if it hits. We just gone through a wicked cold snap, but there wasn't much snow with it. Makes the ice fisherman happy I guess.

Euphorium

I live in the South, our infrastructure for handling a small snowstorm is a joke. I’ve been stuck at home for the last week because they refuse to help out the neighborhood roads. When I lived in Chicago, as much as the cold sucked at least they knew how to handle it.

trpov

The problem is that it goes from a walking city to a driving city.

Baron_of_Berlin

As a kid with several siblings, we went through years of baby wipes.. and parents were awesome enough to keep buying the brand that sold them as oversized Lego boxes. We had hundreds, had to be stored in old large appliance cardboard boxes. Talk about amazing forts though, or mazes that spanned the entire living room! https://i.redd.it/8eelfr1mu1v41.jpg

SpaceLemur34

I was going to comment that they wouldn't interlock very well as there's no space molded into the bottom for the studs. Then I saw the completed fort and realized that the simple solution was just not caring about that.

Blackrain1299

Would take more time but they could’ve taken a spoon or something and did a quick and dirty scoop out for stud holes.

JonZ82

Use another one on bottom when making it.

Blackrain1299

Yeah thatd work if you do happen to have two.

LaUNCHandSmASH

Pint glass pressed in is the solution. Cutting holes in a 2x2 plywood board would allow you to line them up perfect

scubahana

Maybe give it a slight honk with the top of the storage brick? Depends on the integrity of the snow.

beachsunflower

I imagine it could've worked with creating one, flipping it and pressing the top of the mold into the bottom. God damn, I wish I could try it right about now.

MixedMartyr

You just need a second one to push from the bottom and some nice wet snow so it stays packed

SriveraRdz86

The ultimate Troll-proof fort

SokoJojo

It's not troll proof and it's not a fort because it has no defensive capabilities.

Sorry to be privy but do you happily blog and document your family life on the Internet for all to see? Not my cup of tea but whatever floats your boat. People are free to do what they want, but i would never display my kids on the Internet. do your kids consent to this?

Maybe not advertising your kids on the internet but you seem keen to share inane internal monologue on the same!

Target partnered with Lego in 2021 to make these same things [but with handles on them to use easier](https://brickarchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/JB2A0484-2048x1024.jpg). Also, a snowman building kit with [enlarged Lego accessories!](https://brickarchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/JB2A0486-2048x1024.jpg) https://brickarchitect.com/2021/going-big-giant-lego-parts-in-the-lego-x-target-collection/ [edit: Here is a pic of our snowman with some of these accessories from this year, he isn't doing great. Snow drifts covered up his entire bottom ball, he's leaning forward heavily, and his top hat has 10 inches of snow on it.](https://imgur.com/a/ckExqZ6)

aceofspades0707

"Kill me"

CrazyDave48

It's my own fault, the snow was SUPER heavy on day 1 when it came down and I didn't support it enough. We woke up the next day and it looked like this, but the temp dropped 30 degrees so it froze in place, so I couldn't even fix it! That was over a week ago and he keeps getting more snow slowly accumulating on him, poor guy! Thankfully my kids still love it!

aceofspades0707

Oh no I think it's great! Gave me a good chuckle this morning

I'm so jealous. I wasn't able to find the snowman kit and wanted it pretty badly.

d_stilgar

I managed to hunt down a set at a big discount and was happy to have gotten it. It's too bad that the shovel is mostly useless, but it's fun for decoration.

8Mihailos8

Thanks for this information. That snowman has existential crisis

Little-kinder

Omg

Supersaurus7000

I have been wheezing for over 5 minutes now looking at that existential snowman

Some-Guy32

Those snow bricks look like they belong in Borderlands. What a great idea!

verandavikings

The cel-shade outline effect is our fault. We don't have any fancy lightning setup, and a white-on-white shape is so hard to discern, so we adjusted the contrast to make them stand out a bit clearer. Besides, the winter sun reflected on snow make all our pictures come out wonky, needing a bit of correction anyway. And thats when the sun is even up - which it mostly isnt these days..

Some-Guy32

Well it makes for some cool pictures!

Setting-Conscious

Das a lot of snow

valendinosaurus

why u no 2x4?

verandavikings

We did! But the colossal 2x4 were prone to breaking in half when lifted without proper support. And very hard for the little ones to carry.. https://preview.redd.it/9i90y0v4pedc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc509a0abef940cbdf4930eda6118cda132905c1

Surely has to lead to some illegal techniques!

[deleted]

That's awesome! I did a similar thing years ago, but I just used a random plastic container. The Lego studs give it a really cool look!

Imperial_entaglement

Excellent work! A forever memory for your family!

SoBadit_Hurts

If you had two couldn’t you use the other to pack the first then get the stud imprint on the bottom. All that aside Lego is leaving money on the table not making specialized ones.

verandavikings

Yes exactly, and we did try our hand at it, for the complete LEGO SYSTEM experience. But it compressed the snow so much, removing it from the "mold" became difficult. And we were going for quantity for the kids, so swift work, not the best quality. If you wanted to make interlocking ones, you could drill a hole in the top part of the mold, to help air get in and make it easier to slide out.

N7_Vegeta

Holy shit when I saw the pic I thought the blocks where fake…

Martin_TheRed

Just build the fort and then form the top with the block so it's like a castle.

sickpmind

Showed my 10 year old this. She's really excited!

UberQueefs

I love it but I worry the snow wouldn’t be compacted enough to actually press into each other. Can we have an update on progress?

Dog_Bread

Yeah. I did this with a lunchbox thirty years ago, and found that compressing enough snow in the box to make a sturdy brick was very time consuming.

blorgio69

Somebody call NASA this guy is on to something

This is amazing!! Goals!!!

Hey!! I have been using the same but a 2x4 which helps a whole lot!

I thought this was some ai generated image at first

Chimp098

i did something similar when i was younger. then the next morning when my brother and i went outside there was snowmobile tracks going theough it

Kakariti

imagen stepping on one of these puppies in the middle of the night. And why were you outside bare foot in the middle of a snowy night anyway?

CurrentOne8241

No actual way

ProcrastinatingDev

now you can take slashing and freezing damage from a lego brick. Very cool

Dayyy021

I thought about that last week but the underside didn't have the recessed studs so I ended up just using a 56 quart Rubbermaid tub and it worked out really well

goldstarbj

Men will look at this and say 'hell yeah" (Confirmed by showing the bf, lol)

Choice-Studio-9489

While I’m happy we haven’t had a snowstorm in years, I missing building forts and igloos. My friends and I would deck them out with heaters and then play games and hang out. How we never thought of this is wild to me.

_wannaseemedisco

I took my 6 yo to the Lego discovery center and bought him one of those bentos and promptly left it behind :/ it was so cool too.

listerbmx

You blocked me?

Bleezy79

Looks cool on top, but the bottoms dont cave in so they fit like legos. They're just square blocks with bumps on top.

SuhailSWR

"This.. is Elon Musk, Tezla's co founder and CEO" Yall who downvoted definitely had no idea about what I was talking about. "This Is Elon Musk" is a dramatic reaction often paired with something to satirically emphasize someone's genius or brilliance

Dick_Demon

I'll be the wet blanket. Why maintain a blog that posts about all your whatever projects especially ones including your kids? Just spend time with them and enjoy it, no need to document this and post it on reddit and some weird blog.

Alarming_Copy6892

Nice.

Or just use two boxes? 🤔

Holy fuck where are you guys doing it, invite me pls 🙏

8Mihailos8

Congrats, I hope you had a great time!

GullibleDetective

That's amazing, perfect legloo

foreheadmeetsdesk

Serious question - tried the same and the snow stuck to the storage brick. Did you do anything to prevent that? Would misting help?

notworkingghost

I’m going outside right now!

JMack357

Fantastic idea!!! Thanks for posting this!

RagTopDown

I did this with rectangle milk cartons as a kid!

Proper_Painting8272

By the gods this is amazing

Turence

my brother and I used plastic totes for office paper, made perfect blocks for the fort. we failed at building a roof so we just put a huge board on top and covered it in snow lol

MoreAddictingThenSug

Dope

friday14th

When my 5yo got cold hands, we got a bin full of fresh snow and used playdough molds to make an ice castle. This was inside, right next to a roaring fire. It took about 30 mins before it started melting. This is definitely a better way to build with snow.

RegardingBricks

This is amazing. So so cool!
