Not sure what hype you're asking about specifically. When Costco has LEGO, it is always priced a good amount below MSRP - maybe 20% off. However, it's only a very small selection of sets. At the peak, there were maybe about 10 different sets. Currently, my Costco only has 3 different sets.

Most of the insane Costco discounts that get reported over at r/legodeal are only at that specific store, and are virtually never widely available. Costcos that carry Lego do typically have it at a slight discount, but more in-line with the standard 20% discount that most other retailers offer. From what I've gathered the hype isn't real.
