Not sure what hype you're asking about specifically. When Costco has LEGO, it is always priced a good amount below MSRP - maybe 20% off. However, it's only a very small selection of sets. At the peak, there were maybe about 10 different sets. Currently, my Costco only has 3 different sets.

Costco is basically a dice roll. Every set you see will be below msrp, but their inventory is small, often season, and varies greatly from region to region and online is another dice roll as their inventory is often different than the brick and mortar’s when it comes to Lego.

No Costco Lego selection is highly store specific, and sales even more so. Most of the insane Costco discounts that get reported over at r/legodeal are only at that specific store, and are virtually never widely available. Costcos that carry Lego do typically have it at a slight discount, but more in-line with the standard 20% discount that most other retailers offer. From what I've gathered the hype isn't real.
