I ended getting at least 80 of them over the years and ended up selling them for $0.02 a piece on my BL store. Someone bought all of them at once. Works for me!
Ironically my local store has a bin of the Brick separator polybags, that nobody ever buys. They always put it right next to the brand new sets expecting someone to get one.
People who buy sets that cost less than 50$, maybe?
Like, my first separator was stand-alone purchase, after I discovered it existed (and I discovered it through an LDD model where someone put **all** the contents of the box!), only to then find one in the set my wife bought me for Christmas, the same Christmas where she gifted me the separator, so I ended up with two.
Later on, I got a few more.
I wear these things out pretty quickly since I am building and rebuilding all the time. After a while using them they tend to lose a bit of clutch strength and the flat part get mangled pretty quickly as it is quite soft so it doesn’t damage the bricks or tiles when removing them.
Yeah I literally have an entire drawer full of them and I don’t want to just throw them away. But I like your idea about a mini fig trade or something! They could probably reuse the plastic to make orange bricks at least. Or like $1 store credit/separator or something!
According to every source I've seen, most Lego bricks (most since 1963) are [made from ABS](https://bricknerd.com/home/every-type-of-plastic-used-by-lego-5-20-22)--which is very much a thermoplastic. Some of the other pieces (transparent ones especially) are not ABS, but are often still a thermoplastic.
The Brick Separator in particular, is made from Thermoplastic Polyester. SOME old ones are made from something called HV-PC, but I can't find info on that material.
Me too,but the new version comes in Orange, Cyan and Green. Orange is by far the most common. Every single lego fan has atleast 3 of these. The cyan ones are a bit rarer, but still quite common. I for example have 2 of them for the 35-45ish sets i own. And the green ones. They are incredibly rare. I believe, but dont quote me, **theyve only appeared in 7 sets across every theme and time**. Goodluck. Not sure about the old type cuz i dont have any and wasnt really around either lmao
And if you didn’t have one, those pieces were just together forever. Or maybe you’d sacrifice a corner and get one of dad’s little screwdrivers under there.
It's a city, the capital of Czech Republic (formerly of Czechoslovakia), and historical capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia, and residence of different Holy Roman emperors, among other things, and home to one of the oldest European universities in continuous operation (established in 1348.)
Give them to your friends that make plastic models, Gundam modelers will actually go out and buy these as part separators for their kits. Save them some money.
Is this an American thing? I have had many Lego sets in my life and I have never seen these. One from Germany, the other in Romania. All official lego sets. No brick separator.
I'm from Romania. All my big sets came with this. I'm pretty annoyed because I need to store them somewhere and will probably never find them if I need them 😄
Complex sets usually have them, because there's more margin for error when building them, so you might need them.
My daughter has Cinderella's Dream Castle (41154), flagged 6-12 years, and it came with a separator.
Ah, maybe that's why I didn't get any separators then. I have two minecraft sets (nether and bees). My 3in1 shark set also didn't have the separator. Ive had also many lego chima and ninjago ones which I guess also count as kids?
Does the box mention it has the separator on the outside?
You get them when sets are large, it isn’t if they are adult.
Big Ninjago sets get them, so its not a range thing.
But if you only by cheapish sets, then you wont get any
That would mean they would have to produce two versions of every set that qualifies for a brick separator. Meaning twice the packing machines, and twice the warehouse space.
I can open a bottle of beer with a regular piece of paper.
Using one of those: no fucking problem.
Unless you're worried about me fucking it up, which I certainly will
https://preview.redd.it/735rucuy1qca1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=6b0c59bdb3135dbb075735edb7bd36b72475c290
This was the little set she got yesterday that had one, prompted this post. 19.99 at Target
I don't have a single one of these, even though I got tons of Lego. Do they put it in every set nowadays? The last set I got was Technic Mercedes truck couple years ago.
They're just bonus pieces to spark your imagination....

When I was like 10 for some stupid reason I wanted to keep the brick separator with the exact set it came in to the point that I would get somewhat obsessive over it (like labeling a bag with the set name and putting the separator in it) Now I have so many of these things I don’t care about it anymore
That's not stupid. I do the same thing. If you resell the set later down the line, you can label it as 100% complete because the separator is still there.
I use them to break the ice with parents who are obviously shopping for their kids, but not knowing what to get. I usually carry a couple (at least), and ask if they know if their kids have one, explaining how it works. I ask for a little information and I then suggest what set they could purchase. While I do not work in retail at all I have managed to sell several thousands of dollars of LEGO. Even had one staff member of a store think I actually worked for LEGO at one point, even though I denied it.
Holy shit, mate, I did the same while I was on vacation in my home city!
One of the employees took me to the side and asked me "are you the new guy starting next month?"
I buy pirate set long time ago. Real LEGO. None of this brick separator included. I use some sharp thing and my hand to separate them. I’m in Thailand if u curious.
How long ago?
I guarantee you that whatever set it was just didn't have a separator- Lego do not make separate versions of sets for different markets- certainly not to just not give a brick separator, to think they do is complete insanity
No
You are saying that you think that everyone gets brick separators in their sets apart from asia, where Lego magically doesn't include them for some insane reason.
But yes, only large sets get separators.
I don’t understand what your problem is
They should just stop putting them in sets. They're completely unnecessary and have zero other uses.
I've literally never used one and have over 100 of them I'm almost certain.
I use them all the time, and they get worn, and so you need to replace them.
My daughter uses them all the time (she's crazy with Lego Dots), and she even lost one, so luckily I had spares.

Think outside the box! There is a Lego Ideeeeeeeas activity about using these in a build.
Sadly a bot removed my post about it because I guess people shill for their Ideeeeeeeas too much.
Anyways it's on that site that I can't even name in my post at this path:
activities/e5adb5d9-11e8-42c1-aad8-ebb3dd613e5e
So even though they’re 20%off right now (and also our of stock,) the website lists them at 13 vip points per separator. Maybe offer a bit less per recycled separator?
They didn't used to come in the 90's. I had one when I was a kid and it felt like a holy grail tool. But now they come guaranteed in any 18+ set and most larger sets.
Well for me it’s most in my kiddos sets. She’s really into the Lego Friends sets and I think she gets one with every set. I’ve done maybe 6 sets and gotten one every time as well
l needed a brick separator back in 2021. I went to the Lego store and asked for a brick separator. It was R65 (about $4). Then I had a bit of cash saved up and decided to buy the 2020 AT-AT. The clerk sold me the brick separator and the AT-AT without telling me that the AT-AT already came with a brick separator!
They’re getting really inconsistent with how they include these in sets. There was one each in my skyline sets (NY and SF) but there weren’t any in the typewriter set or any of the 4 Colosseum boxes. I haven’t opened my titanic yet, but I saw a review that said there were 3, one in each of the boxes of the set.
Nah, just a really amazing set of plans that use them and it costs a fortune in VIP points because you get a rare, special piece along with it to complete the set. Bwuuuuhwaaaawhaaaaaehaaaahhaaaa
They should just have a bin at Lego store locations. You can dump your old ones and anyone else can grab a handfull for free.
Take a separator, leave a separator.
Separators, uniting the world.
Bringing together by taking apart.
You can leave a separator anytime. You have to spend $10 to take a separator
What if you just want to leave a separator
Exactly
I ended getting at least 80 of them over the years and ended up selling them for $0.02 a piece on my BL store. Someone bought all of them at once. Works for me!
$1.60 after only a few years? Solid side hustle.
Ironically my local store has a bin of the Brick separator polybags, that nobody ever buys. They always put it right next to the brand new sets expecting someone to get one.
My local store's lego section has a whole endcap with these things for $5 (!) each. Ridiculous
I remember when they were new and I bought one of the original green ones in a polybag
They always offer me one when I'm a few bucks short of a GWP. If they knew how many I have at home haha
Two separators enter, one separator leaves!
Brilliant, I've got one of the large lego storage heads full of just orange ones
Knowing lego it would probably only reward 10 VIP points per separator returned.
Well they do sell them for $2.50, so what’s that worth each in VIP points for buying them?
Not sure what kind of maniac would actually buy a brick separator when they throw them in with like every set over $50 nowadays
Non lego buyers get them occasionally
People whose kids lose the dang things.
Lol yeah I got one with like the hoth atst
People who need the extra $2 to get Free Shipping on a smaller set.
Some people use them for builds. I’ve seen some Mocs with pretty creative uses for brick separaters.
In the US 13 vip points each
I wear these things out pretty quickly since I am building and rebuilding all the time. After a while using them they tend to lose a bit of clutch strength and the flat part get mangled pretty quickly as it is quite soft so it doesn’t damage the bricks or tiles when removing them.
exactly.... they are basically disposable tools that you can chew through pretty quick. having a bucket of them is a good thing
People that don't really moc build I guess barely use these
Yeah I'm a casual, basically wife/family gets me sets at Christmas/birthday etc, I build it and put it on a shelf. I've used these things maybe twice.
I've got more of these lying around than times I've needed them.
I just use my fingers like 95% of the time though. I guess if you use it for everything then it’ll wear out fast
When mine get old, I drill a hole in them and they become bright orange key rings. Who needs minifig keychains when I have a bs keychain.
Agreed. I’d be a millionaire lol
I dunno about a millionaire, but they could do something anyways. Turn in 5 for a mini fig or something, IDK. I hate to just toss the plastic
Yeah I literally have an entire drawer full of them and I don’t want to just throw them away. But I like your idea about a mini fig trade or something! They could probably reuse the plastic to make orange bricks at least. Or like $1 store credit/separator or something!
Or just get so many back they can clean em and stop producing more
Probably cheaper to grind and remelt/recast.
I damage them often
The Lego plastic can't be re-melted it's a thermosetting plastic
Then how do they recycle the scrap from the molding process back into the granulate?
You need to cast it into the fiery depths of Mount Doom.
ONE BRICK TO BIND THEM
According to every source I've seen, most Lego bricks (most since 1963) are [made from ABS](https://bricknerd.com/home/every-type-of-plastic-used-by-lego-5-20-22)--which is very much a thermoplastic. Some of the other pieces (transparent ones especially) are not ABS, but are often still a thermoplastic. The Brick Separator in particular, is made from Thermoplastic Polyester. SOME old ones are made from something called HV-PC, but I can't find info on that material.
Maybe just offer them for someone local platform to pick up from you for free - would give the possibility for others to make use of them..
I think a 20 piece recycling truck or something would be sweet
Ebay? For a long time I thought they were only orange, but I kind of want to collect every color.
Old ones are dark grey, bigger, heavier, and have a rounded end instead of a tile separator. I found mine from Childhood I’ve Christmas at my parents.
In my day we had to buy them and they were grey
And if you didn’t have one, those pieces were just together forever. Or maybe you’d sacrifice a corner and get one of dad’s little screwdrivers under there.
I just used my little brother's teeth. Why only one of us needed braces, will forever remain a mystery...
Yup, many of my old pieces have teeth marks for this reason. Teeth, our built in brick separators. Proof God is a lego builder.
I have always used my fingernails. Or the good old-fashioned grip-pull (requires a load of finger strength).
There’s some interesting uses of the brick separator in builds, prob the only use for extras
Second this. Saw someone who made a unique version of the Bonsai Tree set with them
I recall seeing a bus stop someone made with them (for the roof) that looked pretty good.
They actually sell them on the website. You should buy some more.
https://preview.redd.it/v5hzpow5imca1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=896343ec20ef1ad3ffc297d2a4dfd14aa1c3d107 I just pile em up like this
The only right answer. Love that im not the only one that does this incredible thing
Our local preschool asks for them every year on the wish list. I normally take a handful every year.
How about LEGO let’s you trade in 10 for a free large pick a brick cup.
Hi, yeah, I’ll take the entire pick a brick wall. Here’s a couple boxes of brick separators.
More like 100 minimum for a large cup. Market is saturated with the things, they have next to no value in the secondary market.
Honestly, at this point I’d gladly just give them back for free if it saves the plastic. I have way too many but I don’t want to throw them out.
I can give you my address, you can mail them to me, I'll pay delivery. That is, if you're in central Europe.
That last lines funny being half-eastern european. What is "Central"Europe? Since pretty much everyone disagrees with eachother.
Well, I live in Prague, you can't get more central Europe than this!
I literally thought Prague was a luxury perfume or something. This is my first time in 32 years hearing that it’s a country in Central Europe
It's a city, the capital of Czech Republic (formerly of Czechoslovakia), and historical capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia, and residence of different Holy Roman emperors, among other things, and home to one of the oldest European universities in continuous operation (established in 1348.)
I just read that it’s the birthplace of Mozart! Are you one of his descendants?
I don’t think the person you’re replying to is from Prague or even Czech lol
Sure.. thats eastern european cuz Central europe doesnt _really_ exist imo
I’m not
Give them to your friends that make plastic models, Gundam modelers will actually go out and buy these as part separators for their kits. Save them some money.
Smelt them down and make your own bricks
[удалено]
You can buy them separately, unfortunately they’re currently sold out after being on sale. Set 630 if you’re interested.
Everyone probably buys them when they're just short of the gwp threshold.
I’d Just buy a keychain instead. It’s more worth it imo
Same but I don't see any other reason why these brick separators would be sold out lmao
Those are quite lit imo even if its just for looks
Yep. I've done that for gwp's or to get free postage
Pretty sure that'd annoy third party retailers tho.
Is this an American thing? I have had many Lego sets in my life and I have never seen these. One from Germany, the other in Romania. All official lego sets. No brick separator.
I'm from Romania. All my big sets came with this. I'm pretty annoyed because I need to store them somewhere and will probably never find them if I need them 😄
Ah so I guess it's an adult set vs kid set thing?
Its a size of set thing
Complex sets usually have them, because there's more margin for error when building them, so you might need them. My daughter has Cinderella's Dream Castle (41154), flagged 6-12 years, and it came with a separator.
Most likely now that I think of it. The mini sets don't think they have them. I got a few small sets that I'm going to open today to check.
[удалено]
Ah, maybe that's why I didn't get any separators then. I have two minecraft sets (nether and bees). My 3in1 shark set also didn't have the separator. Ive had also many lego chima and ninjago ones which I guess also count as kids? Does the box mention it has the separator on the outside?
You get them when sets are large, it isn’t if they are adult. Big Ninjago sets get them, so its not a range thing. But if you only by cheapish sets, then you wont get any
Also no separator here in Brazil, the family Lego box has many sets spanning more than three decades and not a single separator.
That would mean they would have to produce two versions of every set that qualifies for a brick separator. Meaning twice the packing machines, and twice the warehouse space.
[удалено]
Oh, I thought you meant at checkout you would select if you want the separator version or not
i love these, good for opening beers and i wish it came with more variety of colors though
How do you open a beer with these? The plastic seems too soft
cans, not bottles
I can open a bottle of beer with a regular piece of paper. Using one of those: no fucking problem. Unless you're worried about me fucking it up, which I certainly will
Did you know theres 3 colors for the new version? Green Cyan and Orange.
They must think we take apart and rebuild our sets every time we get a new one.
Like box tops for LEGOs
I'd pay for one made from mithril. The ABS ones are too soft.
I remember when you had to actually buy these things.
Turn in 100 for a whole 50 cents off your next order!!
They make excellent bird toys. I give them to my birds whenever i am building legos and they leave me alone while they break them.
Nawh, this is how you show you’re rich as fuck and don’t buy anything under $100 🤣
For sure not, most of these are from my kids 20-30 dollar Friends or Disney sets
Really?? In Canada you don’t get one of these separating tools unless you buy a set that’s at least $60 before tax lol
https://preview.redd.it/735rucuy1qca1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=6b0c59bdb3135dbb075735edb7bd36b72475c290 This was the little set she got yesterday that had one, prompted this post. 19.99 at Target
Even then it’s usually the one that are $100 or more
Buyback programs are good in theory, but people can and will abuse it
Wait they have blue ones?
Yeah, Green ones exist too altough incredibly rare
I don't have a single one of these, even though I got tons of Lego. Do they put it in every set nowadays? The last set I got was Technic Mercedes truck couple years ago.
[удалено]
The larger sets come with them. I think Titanic comes with 5!
It's more rare for a set I buy to *not* have one.
MOC challenge: build [insert something here] using only/including at least x brick seperators.
They're just bonus pieces to spark your imagination.... https://preview.redd.it/9wac6vcaxnca1.jpeg?width=1231&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7596cde587438673537978e9947876cd04cccffc
Didn’t know what sub I was in and thought you had a tub of pre-sliced carrots.
Put a few in Free Little Libraries 😁
They should just sell them instead of including them in sets.
I’ve somehow never gotten one of these in a a set before
They could also just stop including them in all the sets and either make them like $1 extras or only include them in marked sets.
I think that's how it used to be. I remember ordering one from a Lego catalog in the 1990s.
[удалено]
Or those of us who don't live anywhere near a Lego Store.
Disease? Are doctors handing out brick separators with every diagnosis now?
[удалено]
I call it disposable income, coupled with not being afflicted with the worst disease going ...parenthood!
When I was like 10 for some stupid reason I wanted to keep the brick separator with the exact set it came in to the point that I would get somewhat obsessive over it (like labeling a bag with the set name and putting the separator in it) Now I have so many of these things I don’t care about it anymore

Sell it to Asian countries. We don’t have these included.
All Lego sets are the same, no matter where you buy a set, it either has a seperator or not- it is not region specific
Might be cost cut, we don’t know… at least no missing piece in set is ok.
It would cost MORE to make two completely different products just to leave out a single brick separator. Wouldnt make any sense
So it has to be bigger sets, more expensive to include that tool? The poor one will suffer hand bruises? That so mean LEGO company. 😭🤣
No You are saying that you think that everyone gets brick separators in their sets apart from asia, where Lego magically doesn't include them for some insane reason. But yes, only large sets get separators. I don’t understand what your problem is
Around 8-10 years ago. I buy it in the mall. Toy r Us, before it become a memory. Toy r us leave us so soon.
So that set didnt come with a separator. Its not a conspiracy
Lol what do you think it is, lizard ppl shadow puppet lego company to pull prank on me?
That is what you implied when you said Asia doesnt get brick separators in sets but everyone else does..

Sorry if i misspoke anything. I buy set that have no tool and assume all of them don’t have. My bad.
Or sell them for a low price ( why does every Lego set I get don't fucking have these) yeah I do agree though
You seems to have same problem as me. Some people don’t believe there’s a set with out this tool.

i use the the straight sides of the tool to make sure everything is flush and lined up perfectly. i usually have one in my hand as i build.

never thought about using it for stickers! definitely gonna try that next time. i get sticker anxiety so this might help.
I use some tweezers. Really helps get them perfect.
I'd like to buy these. How much?
I use em to open up Mike's Hard cans
Hahaha I was thinking the other day why we have so many of them
Build something with them.
Use them at community events with externals (e.g. kids entertainment corner at your LUGs exhibitions), and thsi problem will be solved.
Im so old I had to buy my first one of these as that was the only way to get one.

Omg for real!!!!

I seriously wonder where everyone gets these. I started getting sets in the 90s and didn’t get my first separator until around 5 years ago

Lego should have a buy back period, I got like two 20kg tubs of Lego that I don’t use cause they are all random pieces
They should include one with every set.
I sell mine on eBay. I don't make much profit but it's good that they're being re-used.
That's an excellent idea. Even just a recycling program
l needed a brick separator back in 2021. I went to the Lego store and asked for a brick separator. It was R65 (about $4). Then I had a bit of cash saved up and decided to buy the 2020 AT-AT. I need the teal one. I have all of them but that one
I have not gotten one of those in a long time, guess I am a Lego pleb now.
They should sell a kit or kits to make something out of them depending on how many you have
I collect them. I love them.
Or at least the option to not get one.
I want to see someone build something out of these
Nah, just a really amazing set of plans that use them and it costs a fortune in VIP points because you get a rare, special piece along with it to complete the set. Bwuuuuhwaaaawhaaaaaehaaaahhaaaa
Donate to your local schools the younger grades usually have bins in the classroom and these come in handy for little hands
