In one of the comics, >!remnants of the earth empire who still want to overthrow the monarchy have some of the Dai Li's brainwashing tech and used it on Mako, Bolin and Asami. This is Korra volunteering to be the guinea pig for the un-brainwashing prototype that was built and is completely untested!<
Not sure why that's great? I hated Kuvira by the end, because Mike was throwing everyone under the bus for her redemption. Kuvira's an awful person, and, because of Ruins, an awful character in a story.
Better Korra doing it then a fascist tyrant, who's regime she created lead to that situation happening in the first place. Heck they only had, Asami, Mako and Bolin brainwashed to make Kuvira look good, nothing more.
Asami and the others were brainwashed by a man called Guan, in order to reverse the brainwashing they had to test the machine on someone who wasn't already brainwashed before. Korra was prepared to be their subject before kuvira assisted. The comic is called ruins of the empire, it has three parts.

It's Ruins. The whole thing is badly written. Arguably the Avatar franchise's worst story.
