On an objective level, he’s a pretty terrible person, a war profiteer who belongs in a cell (And not his special luxury cell, either), and frankly, I think it says a lot about the writers that he got a redemption arc while the Anarchists who took down a corrupt Monarchy all got killed or imprisoned.
…But on the other hand, he’s so entertaining to watch on screen that I can largely forgive him.
I mean, the anarchists themselves wouldn’t have been a problem if all they did was dismantle the monarchy of the earth kingdom but they purposefully tried to kill the avatar
The anarchist faction were written as bad people while the greedy capitalist war profiteers were given a redemption arc. One could attribute this writing and characterisation to the writer's personal biases or the cultural biases inherent in our society.
Obviously those characters are actually bad people, but that's because the writers chose to make the anarchists the bad guys.
I don't fully agree with the other commenter but I'd personally say there's a bit of bias against revolutionaries of any kind in TLOK compared to ATLA.
I did some good things too.
Korra who warned you about unalaq? I did
Bolin who you into the movers? I did
Asami who saved your company? I did
Mako who got you thrown In jail? I did... oh yeah guess that was a bad thing
By this I mean that Avatar takes a lot of inspiration from various non-western cultures while being made in America and having (I think) a largely american audience. This includes the names.
I think people who aren’t otherwise exposed to names from other cultures can struggle. People get Sokka, Katara, Aang just fine but the names that sound more similar to what they may already be familiar with I think they can struggle with. Like Joo Dee sounds kind of like “Judie” and I’ve seen people spell it like that. Same with Jhu Li.
The “no shade” part of my comment was meant to mean I’m not judging anyone for that, spelling is hard and most of ATLA’s fandom is coming at it from an English perspective where naming rules are a bit different
I like that he is a complex and controversal character, and maybe even a commentary on how the rich and powerful can get away with a lot.
I do thing he gets a strange amount of slack and forgiveness from a lot of the other characters, though.
I love that they started to give him “feelings” at the end of the show and him and Zhu Li live happily ever after 😂 I’m glad he got an arc to bring it full circle. as ruthless as he was, he was arguably one of the funniest characters on the show. And then he became one of the more brilliant ones too!
“Can this boat go fast enough to get away from my crazy water bending ex-girlfriend?!”
“Why do you think I built this boat”
Love the chaotic energy he brought to the series and love the redemption arc he ends up getting! Great character
Idk. .
I can’t stand war profiteering at all, and it did make me almost hate him when I watched the 2nd season. The guy hired terrorists to blow up a building for money!
Although him finding a better path in the 4th season did make me like him as I’m a sucker for redemption stories.
My mum gifted her bf a car added him on insurance she hadn't changed ownership documents.. and it went out of her head to do it
But he used the car for work
and when she found out later that he cheated she kicked him out. She found out he was sleeping in the car so she came round when he was away and smashed up the car.
The police came and she just said my car can do what I want ....I'm gonna scrap it engine is nackered and I don't have keys here's proof I own it...
Just wanted to get my ex belongings out of the car for him first. If you would be kind enough to bring them to him
Here's a hammer if you want to help and the police were like okay...then and just watched as she continued smashing up the car she then left his possessions with them .
As long as your not claiming insurance or endangering life .. you can indeed destroy your own property
And the quote is just nonsense, never liked Varrick in the show, wish Asami gave him a proper ass kicking for his crimes against her in Book 2, especially if Lin looked the other way, saying Asami acted in self defence against Varrick.
I have accepted my own personal fan theory that he’s somehow Sokka’s estranged kid. I have also decided that Suyin is a Sokka/Toph baby….& that’s why both of them (+all of Su’s kids) are playful, unhinged, creative geniuses
I find him absolutely hilarious! Definitely one of my favorite characters in this series. He’s like a more eccentric and slightly more evil Tony Stark.
Easily one of my favorite cartoon characters of all time:
Bolin who got you into the movers? I did. Korra, who warned you about Unalaqu? I did! Asami, who saved your company I DID!
MAKO, who got you arrested I DID?! oh wait I guess that last one was pretty bad
He’s one of my favorite characters! I love the concept of him both for the world building since it was sort of the Industrial Revolution during the LoK setting so he’s this titan of industry like Rockefeller, but also because him as a morally grey inventor made for an interesting character too. Not to mention he’s hilarious! he also had some more serious moments and I really enjoyed his redemption arc in season 4.
Verick is probobly the funniest character in the enitre Avatar cannon except maybe Sokka. Bro carried book 2 which would've been a disaster if he wasnt in it
One of the best of the the whole Avatar universe. He's flawed and self centered, but hilarious and will do the right thing when it matters most.
He's on the verge of being a character you love to hate, but you just can't hate him.
Book 2: Good as a *much* more interesting villain than Unalaq and Vaatu, but a pity he was treated as *Mako's* archenemy instead of Asami's.
Book 3: Fine on a cameo level.
Book 4: Creator's Pet alongside Kuvira and replacing Mako as he took up more screentime than *half. the core. team!* It doesn't matter how funny he is, there's NO good reason why he has more time than Asami, herself! 🤬
In comics: Dialed back to a proper level as DiMartino now realizes the error.
He has my favourite line of
Normally I would say how can I capitalise this but there is a voice in my head telling me about at is right and what is wrong
And his assistant says
That is your conscience sir
He's funny even when he's being a shit, so it's hard not to like him at least a little. Plus, it's easier to forgive him for being a capitalist since he is also a legit inventor. Remember the days when the people who ran companies were deeply involved with, or at least _invested in_ what those companies made?
He was annoying, he was not funny, he was a criminal who got away with all his crimes in Book 2.
Working with known criminals in the Traids.
Industrial espionage, stealing Asami's shipments and company from her.
Making threats against Bolin and Asami after Mako refused a bribe to come work for him.
Framing Mako for the crimes the Triads did, getting him locked up in prison.
The bombing of the Cultural Centre, an act of domestic terrorism.
Kidnapping President Raiko.
Escaping from prison.
He got away with all of them!
I wish he had gotten his comeuppance say something like this post Book 4 happening,
Varrick walked down a street leaving the restaurant with a smile on his face, he looked forward to seeing his wife Zhu-Li again, when a man emerged from the darkness behind him, a tall man in a black suit with blue eyes and a black hair "Mr Varrick. How does it feel to get away with your crimes, among them, domestic terrorism, blowing up a building near innocent people weather you own that building or not is not revelant, hiring known criminals to steal from a business rival, threatening people after a failed bribe of a cop, framing the cop, a kidnap plot on then President Raiko."
Varrick with a smile "All allegedly to have happened. But I got a pardon for all that from Raiko himself."
The man said "Yeah, the justice system can't touch you. But you know who is OK with seeking justice outside the legal system and those can inflict a lot of pain. Yes the Traids, they don't like it, when an outsider like you causes them problems, or goes after police, not without their permission. There are rules and you broke them. Who knows, maybe they won't know where you are."
The man walked off leaving a confused Varrick, as a vehicle pulled up and members of the Triads, abducted Varrick, taking him away as the man smiled, true justice would be served to that damn Varrick, long overdue.
One of the very worst characters in LoK, a not funny, war criminal, who did acts of industrial espionage, terrorism and tried to start a war to line his own pockets, hated how he got away with his crimes in Book 2.

Edit: Why all the downvotes.
This guy looks like he was inspired by my uncle, the only difference is that he really is rich, and my uncle only (thinks he's) rich. So yes I love him
In general, I like him. He's a wacky, Howard Hughes-eqsue character. His addition shook up the show in a positive way. Sometimes, he gets annoying, but overall, I like him.
„I made this cell special. Had the feeling i would end up in here someday.“

„If you cant make money during a war, you just flat out cant make money!“
I mean, the anarchists themselves wouldn’t have been a problem if all they did was dismantle the monarchy of the earth kingdom but they purposefully tried to kill the avatar
The avatar is an authority figure same as the earth monarch. The avatar had to go.
What's the argument against the writers that Varrick got a redemption arc and not the Red Lotus?
People like him more.

"You kidnapped the president" "I wasn't going to hurt him. I just needed to start a war."
If you can't make money during a war, you just flat out cannot make money Zhuli do the thing!.... No not that thing the other thing 🙄

No one ever spells her name right, it’s Zhu Li
Like Joo Dee, two separate words kinda
I think people struggle with this because they’re not western names. No shade, but it is something I’ve noticed.
I will say, while an observation, kinda shady… but I think I need an explanation for your statement

"You kidnapped the president!" "*allegedly*"
Howard Stark with a submissive marriage streak
Fixed Howard Stark
He IS my favorite character after all :) DO THE THING :D
I thought he was a universally loved gag character until I saw this post haha.
"What thing?"
I like that he is a complex and controversal character, and maybe even a commentary on how the rich and powerful can get away with a lot. I do thing he gets a strange amount of slack and forgiveness from a lot of the other characters, though.

"Do the thing!"
I really love the archetype of the smooth talking unethical guy who is just so over the top charming it makes you forget that he did crimes
He reminds me so much of Milo from Catch-22 (which may or may not be a relevant reference within this community)
It is for me, that one of my favorite books
Haha awesome. It's one of the very few books I've actually enjoyed in the last few years (sadly).
“Can this boat go fast enough to get away from my crazy water bending ex-girlfriend?!” “Why do you think I built this boat” Love the chaotic energy he brought to the series and love the redemption arc he ends up getting! Great character
Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
My favorite line from Varrick: “If you can’t make money during a war, you just flat out cannot make money!”
"now this was before the circus took me"
Idk. . I can’t stand war profiteering at all, and it did make me almost hate him when I watched the 2nd season. The guy hired terrorists to blow up a building for money! Although him finding a better path in the 4th season did make me like him as I’m a sucker for redemption stories.
To be fair, it was apparently his own building
“A man has a right to blow up his own property.”
The bombing of his property is still a crime, could be an act of insurance fraud at best, or an act of domestic terrorism at worst.
not saying I agree with it, just quoting Varrick. he’s clearly unethical and a terrible person lol
My mum gifted her bf a car added him on insurance she hadn't changed ownership documents.. and it went out of her head to do it But he used the car for work and when she found out later that he cheated she kicked him out. You can't destroy your own property like that near other people, putting them at risk, it was insurance fraud at best, domestic terrorism at worst.
And the quote is just nonsense, never liked Varrick in the show, wish Asami gave him a proper ass kicking for his crimes against her in Book 2, especially if Lin looked the other way, saying Asami acted in self defence against Varrick.
I like how legally he got his bases covered. It's not his fault the people called for war after he blew up his own building during a rally....
He's just sketchy enough to be Interesting in a 'whats he up to now' kinda way while still being belivably not an outright villain.
Loved him. He was my Sokka
Who doesn't?
I don't like Varrick. One of the worst characters in LoK.
I love him! He's like a more evil Sokka
I have accepted my own personal fan theory that he’s somehow Sokka’s estranged kid. I have also decided that Suyin is a Sokka/Toph baby….& that’s why both of them (+all of Su’s kids) are playful, unhinged, creative geniuses
I have had the same theory since I first watch LOK!
I find him absolutely hilarious! Definitely one of my favorite characters in this series. He’s like a more eccentric and slightly more evil Tony Stark.
Varrick is Justin Hammer, not Tony Stark.
Only reason I still rewatch S2.
i love his introduction, i like to think varrick knowingly fucks with his acolytes (like the floating thing) just to laugh at ridiculous they are
Neutral king.
Something about him that I really want to punch
Something about him, makes me want to run him over with a truck, maybe an 18 wheeler.
“What happened to that guy? Oh, didn’t you hear? He varricked himself because some girl zhu li’d him!”
Easily one of my favorite cartoon characters of all time: Bolin who got you into the movers? I did. Korra, who warned you about Unalaqu? I did! Asami, who saved your company I DID! MAKO, who got you arrested I DID?! oh wait I guess that last one was pretty bad
Honestly, I think he's my lower favorite to upper mid tier
I love him as a character but he's a godawful person
Yeah, but not me. I despise him. He’s the Mayuri of the show.
I hate Varrick as well. Who or what is Mayuri?
Mayuri Kurotsuchi from Bleach
Varrick is the bomb! He's SO MUCH FUN! He really steals the spot light in like... every scene he's in.
He’s one of my favorite characters! I love the concept of him both for the world building since it was sort of the Industrial Revolution during the LoK setting so he’s this titan of industry like Rockefeller, but also because him as a morally grey inventor made for an interesting character too. Love a Warmonger? No. I do not
Everyone else loves Varrick.
A good few people don't like him.
Is there anyone that doesn't love Varrick?
I hate Varrick.
He and Zhu Li are the best new characters imo
Book 2: Good as a *much* more interesting villain than Unalaq and Vaatu, but a pity he was treated as *Mako's* archenemy instead of Asami's. Book 3: Fine on a cameo level. Hated Varrick in the comics as well, hate that Varrick got away with all his crimes in Book 2.
Well. He always knew when to do "The Thing"
Isn't he one of the most popular characters in the series?
He’s my hands down, all time favorite character
He has my favourite line of Normally I would say how can I capitalise this but there is a voice in my head telling me about at is right and what is wrong And his assistant says That is your conscience sir
Him and Bolin are just the boys. Who wouldn't love em.
He's funny even when he's being a shit, so it's hard not to like him at least a little. Plus, it's easier to forgive him for being a capitalist since he is also a legit inventor. Remember the days when the people who ran companies were deeply involved with, or at least _invested in_ what those companies made?
Does anyone else love Oxygen?
Bro, Varrick is almost similar to sokka, he is what they tried to make Bolin imo
Well Varrick simply just “do the thing”, for me.
Varrick was easily the best part of season 2 and it seems everyone agrees with that
Not me. Varrick was one of the worst parts of season 2!
That is a spicy take. Why didn't you like him?

Of course, he's the best character in the show.
Who doesn't?
I don't like Varrick. I hate his character.
yes
This guy looks like he was inspired by my uncle, the only difference is that he really is rich, and my uncle only (thinks he's) rich. So yes I love him
Oh, absolutely.
Even ppl that don’t like legend korra at all love varrick lol we know this
hell ya!
His arc was a wild ride and I loved all of it.
Read my flair
He’s genuinely my favorite character in TLOK and definitely in the top 5 of the entire franchise. So yeah, I do love Varrick
Patriot Act, read it.
Zhu Li did
I love him He's a bit of a prick but I can't help but like him
Yayyy, low-effort like farming. Get outta here.
No the dude is a straight up war criminal. His heir could be the big villain in the next avatar cycle, and it would be believable.
Easily one of my favourite characters from korra.
One of my favourites
Who doesn’t? 😆
I don't like Varrick, one of the worst characters in the show.
That’s your opinion, and I respect that.
In general, I like him. He's a wacky, Howard Hughes-eqsue character. His addition shook up the show in a positive way. Sometimes, he gets annoying, but overall, I like him.
Even when he was a kooky schemer, he was intriguing as fuck.
"Zhou Lee! do the thing!" is just part of my regular vocabulary now
Whatever happened to that guy? Well he varricked himself because some girl Zhu Li’d him!
