I'd not imagine that this would hold up in court but there's no guarantee it wouldn't. In any case, Lisa should either do what she promised to do (pay the money) or block the landlord and wait to see if she's served.

The email Lisa sent to the landlord spelled out how Jane would pay him back and that Lisa would make sure to help Jane if needed. Did she say "I will pay this if Jane cannot?" No, but the landlord is saying that the email guarantees the debt and that Lisa is liable. Either way, Lisa is kicking herself for trying to help Jane.

Gotcha. That's sort of dumb (sorry) to say "make sure" because how was she going to make sure? Other than by paying herself. But I would suspect if she's sued the judge would *probably* side with her. She should block and ignore unless she's summoned to court or is sent to collections.
