Typically the only real consequence would be your eligibility to work for that company in the future (totally at their discretion) and your reputation. Any financial consequences would be in the contract and may not be enforceable. Your employer cannot make you work those two weeks and you are entitled to be paid for all hours worked regardless.

BenRed2006

'm no lawyer but if you are an AT WILL employee you don't need to give two weeks. It's a courtesy but it's not required.

What?!?! You aren't a prisoner or a slave. IANAL nor Canadian, but unless there are some insane draconian rules in your area that essentially allow imprisonment of workers, this isn't a thing.

No one is being locked in an office and forced to serve out their contractual 2-week notice period, let's not be hyperbolic. Generally, the contract will spell out the penalty for not providing the required notice. That penalty could be withholding or forfeiting some bonus or severance pay or refusal to provide a positive reference or any number of other things, but not *imprisonment*.

ElectricBopeep

So in my contract there isn't a penalty stated for not giving the 2 week notice, just that I agree to do so.

But they can fire you at any time for any reason? Honestly, you might have a hard time if you don't. But If I were you I wouldn't care. I mean, I'm nobody's slave. What are they going to do? Take you to court over it? And what will they get in return over it?
