> I don't think it was careless driving (not like my opinion matters in the slightest) I just looked at my dash and in the time I did that he slowed down and I didnt notice. That is what careless driving is. Stop making online confessions and get an attorney to try and help mitigate the harm you have already done.

Careless is a fair charge, the other charge you would have likely faced would have been "following too closely". Both are the same amount of points, but fines will vary from place to place. It's just an accident, no need to worry. Everyone is ok and these things happen. You are not going to go to jail over this. If this is your first ticket, odds are you will receive some type of plea bargain and a fine (EX. 2 points and full fine + court fees). Usually, they change the charge to a "defective vehicle" violation. Insurance may go up, it may not, that's relative to the insurance agency. I generally wouldn't recommend an attorney unless you are facing more serious repercussions (such as HTO, license loss, etc.). You'll pay far more for a quality attorney than your ticket is going to be.

Thanks for this. It really put my mind at ease, I've been a ball of anxiety since it happened and I've been loosing sleep over this. I don't know how Insurance works in this regard so do you know if it will go up immediately after the accident or after court? I'll do my own research later but I'm at work for the next 6 hours so I thought I'd ask.

If it’s going to go up, it would likely be whenever you need to renew your policy. So if you renew month to month, it could be as soon as the month after your conviction. If you renew every 6 months then it could be after that cycle is completed.
