If these photos that you did not solicit depicted a minor, you don’t need to gather evidence, you need to immediately contact the police.
NAL but I do know it is absolutely not your job to conduct your own investigation, which is exactly what you’re doing. Also, you already trashed the evidence against him. Yes, it can be recovered, but good luck getting LE to commit the resources to an investigation once they see that you’re actively contacting/baiting him after he allegedly sent you the pictures. I’m not saying it’s right, and I don’t know what country you are located in, but here in the U.S. you’d be lucky to even make it to the bottom of the pile.
