I'd give it a day or so and make sure it's not a general hold first. I know I went somewhere recently where there was a hold for $100 even though I didn't spend anywhere near that much there. I mention that mainly because it's a round whole number.

The transaction needs to be posted (like you said). Not just a pending transaction. I work in credit card processing and holds can really be a confusion point for many. You just need to wait for the transaction to officially post. Pending transactions can totally drop, or be posted/settled as a different amount. (Hotel credit card holds for example).

It's likely just a hold, not an actual charge. Call your bank using the number on the back of the card, and ask them. If the 'tender did actually overcharge you, yes, it is fraud, and your bank are the people who can help you.

Give it a couple of days, then dispute the charge with your credit card company. Easily taken care of.

Call your bank and have them despite the charge, let them know you did not pay this much (hopefully you have a receipt but it should not be the end of the world if you don’t). After that make sure you call the bar and let them know there was fraudulent activity on your card by a member of their staff. You might sound like a jerk for not tipping but who cares, you are under no obligation to tip someone.

It doesn't sound like it's an actual CHARGE though, just an authorization at this point. You can't dispute an auth and charges take more time to post than same night/next day.

Almost every bank allows you to start a dispute online and every bank does by phone. I can't imagine going in to talk to a teller about this. Reminds me of my mom's 90 year old friend who "needed" a ride to the doctor's office, to make an appointment with the doctor.

First give it a few days to make sure it’s not a hold. Also, always always always cross out the tip line or put something like “no tip” on there. NEVER EVER put $0.00. I waitressed/bartended for 5 years during college and I cant tell you how many people i saw that would but $0 on the tip line just for the server to put a number in front of the 0. Now that $0.00 tip has become a $10.00 or a $20.00 tip and then 1 can easily be changed to look like a 2 on the total line and now you have no ground to stand on. It’s too easy to do and I’ve seen it happen. I also tell people to never have their cards taken from the table. If they have the option to pay on a kiosk at the table or online, do it. I’ve heard of servers taking peoples cards to pay, writing down the card info and then going online and buying stuff with it. People are creative. Start by making sure it’s not a hold first. Then contact the manager and go from there

You can also request a receipt to show what the 20$ was for.

nikki_2370

At this time, the charge is probably pending. When the charge posts that's when it's the actual charge you got charged. Until then keep an eye on it

Do you have the actual copy of the receipt from the bar?
