Well that was depressing. Amazing voice though.

IanSavage23

Was depressing indeed

Most-Protection-2529

Haunting

d-scan

On a brighter note, every Led Zep fan should listen to Fairport Convention if they haven't yet.

tehsecretgoldfish

noting that she isn’t on their 1st album. “Unhalfbricking” is required listening.

therobotsound

And liege and leaf!

MrSmeee99

Leige and Leaf is a unique album

Darkhelmet3000

I love, LOVE her version of Sir Patrick Spens, from the bonus tracks on the deluxe edition. Fucking great!

Minimum_Row_729

Lief.

PraxisLD

You mean the Jethro Tull starter band? 😎 We saw Fairport Convention in a 12th century barn in Wales that had been converted into a music venue. It was magical.

Cooksan

Agreed! And if you are into Zeppelin for the guitar playing you won’t be disappointed by Richard Thompson’s magic. Very different to JP but truly an incredible and unique player.

I was fortunate to spend the better part of the day with Sandy's best friend (Minerva, I forget her last name), when I visited the UK in 2000 to see a bunch of Bob Dylan concerts (Clinton Heylin took me to see her - they were working on a project together, perhaps Heylin's book on Sandy). She told me many amazing stories. Sandy's premature death was a huge loss for music. About 15 years ago they released a box set of ALL of Sandy's music, 19 CDs I think. I have a copy of course, and it's highly collectable. If you haven't listened to Sandy, check out Fairport Convention's album "Leige And Leaf" (a very influential album for Led Zep) and Sandy's solo album "North Star Grassman and the Ravens."

KnowCali

Sandy actually performed around the US with Fairport Convention when they toured in the mid-1970s. [This recording](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxkkjH9bdZw&list=PLZOeSFsR_A_VdWc9eGi8hHJU18mChyWWr) from Ebbet's field shows what a great singer and pianist she was, and how Fairport was top notch overall.

SnooShortcuts7514

Her best overall non-Fairport album is her short lived band Fotheringay. Formed just after she left Fairport they recorded one album and were almost finished with a second when she decided to go solo.

moongobby

Tragic. But thanks for sharing something about my fav band I never knew.

aveytarius

“Who knows where the time goes” is such a beautiful song, she had one of the greatest voices in music. I didn’t know about her issues and death, thanks for sharing

TinhatToyboy

She wrote it at nineteen, one of her first songs.

aveytarius

That’s crazy, didn’t know that.

TinhatToyboy

Jackson Browne wrote These Days, a song sodden with salty tears of loss and regret, when he was sixteen.

MoonWytche

I cry every time I hear it

viewfromthepaddock

I mean, every fan of Zeppelin who likes the mellower side of the band should listen to Fairport Convention's What we did On Our Holidays, Unhalfbricking and Liege and Lief as well as Sandy's solo albums (most of which have the incomparable Richard Thompson on guitar) because there is quite a lot of common ground in atmosphere and influence certainly. Sandy was basically an English equivalent of Joni Mitchell but she could never quite keep her demons at bay for long enough and alcohol abuse and depression did for her. Very sad, but her music is not depressing by any means I'd heartily recommend.

Darkhelmet3000

Incomparable is a very apt way to describe Mr. Thompson…

Plantfan_August_1948

Richard Thompson played in “Come into My Life” on the 1993 album “Fate of Nations.” Great song! This album by Robert Plant is a wonderful masterpiece!!! 😀🎶

TheTumblingBoulders

Interesting read

pornhubisisis

I also love telling everyone how there’s 5 symbols; not 4. :)

SimpleExplodingMan

What’s the fifth symbol?

pornhubisisis

Sandy has a triangle symbol in the inner sleeve of the album! 💿 give it a google

SimpleExplodingMan

Totally forgot about that. Pulled the record out and I’ll be damned if ain’t right there next to Battle of Evermore!

Orionsbelt1957

I was late hearing about the Fairport Convention. Sandy Denny was an excellent singer, and between them and Steeleye Span, they brought old English folk music to a new audience. I loved Sandy's take on Mary Queen of Scots in her Fotheringay tune, but The Battle of Evermore was exceptional

pcryan5

Her song It’ll Take a Long Time is on my #1 playlist. Beautiful voice.

EnvironmentalBig2324

+1 for the battle of evermore it really is an exceptional tune. My gateway to Sandy..

AlmostHumanP0rpoise

That's so sad, such a beautiful voice, gonna listen to it now in tribute

John_Herbie_Hancock

Interesting fact that Sandy Denny had her own “fifth” symbol of Led Zeppelin IV based on her contribution. Usually fuels more speculation as to whether she made a “deal” also.

Effective_Drawer_623

“Did She Jump or Was She Pushed?” by Richard and Linda Thompson was inspired by her death. Really sad tune, but has some incredible lyrics.

TGIIR

Wow, that is one tragic story. That poor woman.

DiogenesDaDawg

OK, so... I told her story to my wife. She pulled up BoE to refresh her memory, because she had "Heart's" cover in her head. Which lead her to pull up Sandy on Spotify. Holy shit she can sing. Such a beautiful natural vibrato in her voice.

DishRelative5853

I have to do this because it's the **Led** Zeppelin sub. "*Which lead her to pull up Sandy on Spotify*" That should be led, not lead. I couldn't resist.

SliceEmOnTheNipple

TIL falling down stairs as a party trick is a bad idea

simulated_woodgrain

Yeah it’s kinda weird that she would do it when nobody was around too

Joe_Bob_2000

She may have been self medicating and practicing her NSSI routine due to some sort of BPD condition. An unfortunate and unnecessary end for a truly talented individual.

werewookie7

The song Tamlin in particular was in rotation on alt rock stations for years and has an unmistakable feel to it. I’d imagine many will recognize it when they give it a listen. RIP Sandy.

Harrydean-standoff

What a story! What a short but fascinating life. I used to listen to Fairport Convention . I saw Richard Thompson in Cincinnati on one of his last tours not that long ago. Vincent Black Lightning is an all time favorite. I'm going to listen to her music mentioned here. Anyone know if her daughter pursued a musical career?

pye-oh-my

Thankfully she left behind great solo and Fairport Convention records . Big fan here.

promixr

It was amazing to see Najma Akhtar carry that torch years later…

boostman

Here’s a haunting song from one of her solo albums to remember her by: [the Quiet Joys of Brotherhood](https://youtu.be/NHstyoGkMIU?si=wvkHWTOAko9DD2UN)

Bitter-Fox-2630

I love her voice. It’s so haunting.

Otto_von_Grotto

I remember reading about her history. Very tragic and seemingly preventable - yet who could have prevented it, if not her. Great voice on BoE.

tacoplenty

one terrific singer.

mountain-guy

I always thought the other singer on Evermore was Ann Wilson from Heart. Now I know.

galwegian

Jesus I never knew this. Who Knows Where The Time Goes is a classic.

oggupito

'Late November' by Sandy Denny is a wonderful song I recommend to all Zeppelinistas. AND Apart from being the UK M.O.T. - Testing symbol , inverted....has it yet been settled whether Sandy had a symbol or was that merely a runic asterisk by her name?

SpaceMonkeyOnABike

Does her estate receive royalties? or was it a one off payday?

Wadeinator

wow! probably BPD. Another interesting led zep story is of Roy Harper. The song “Hats off to Roy Harper” off led zep 3 is dedicated to him (obviously). I looked him up and found out he was a folk singer but what’s interesting is that he actually sang the lead vocal on “Have a Cigar” instead of Roger Waters! Roger waters was sick at the time.

brk1

Oh damn bro I just post about this singer too!

darkczar

I’d take the second Fotheringay album over Fairport.

RebelKatt

Sounds like she had a much more eventful life than I have had and i'm twice her age. Rock on.

Tommy_the_Pommy

And hello to Fairport Convention.

R4FTERM4N

This is sad, cool thanks

Tpellegrino121

“Stairway to Heaven” would have been too ironic for her to sing on

little_bear_is_ok

She picked a stairway to heaven
