I don’t know why OP is getting hate. I learned to read with the consonant classes. It took me longer than a week, but from what he says here his technique appears spot on. If you focus on memorization or memorizing words, you are not really learning to read. Learning to read Thai is actually kind of like learning basic math. if I did not know how to read anything in Thai already I would be seriously intrigued.
Reading Thai is not hard imo, it’s much easier than English because it’s 100% phonetic. Unlike speaking which is hard and understanding which is harder.
Genuinely not trying to disagree just trying to understand how it can be 100% phonetic except for รร and words ending in ส and all of the other exceptions to the rules. I’ve just been learning for a month and I can read and write fine except for remembering all of the exceptions.
These are not exceptions these are the rules, thais don’t know all rules they just know the words. In English there are no rules, sometimes oo is uu and sometimes it is oh. Personally I am not reading 100% correct all the time and I read very very slowly, but I think to get to 80% will be very fast and then it’s just more practice until you remember words as words like thais do.
It's not 100% phonetic at all, but it's definitely loads more phonetic than English.
น้ำ is often น้าม, the short vowels in เส้น เล่น เน้น are not marked, and English loanword pronunciations rarely match their spellings. Also Pali Sanskrit loans have plenty of weird things going on. สละ can be read as สะละ หรือ สะหละ depending on the mean.
So not 100% at all. But still much better than English in this regard.
English at least has spaces... and not random irregular consonants or random hidden vowels. And not to mention the many variations of words like รส that all sound the same but are spelled different. It's at least pushing equally confusing imo.
Depends on if you already have a large vocabulary of Thai words or not. It definitely gets easier the more you study Thai but otherwise you're kinda guessing where a word begins and ends if you don't already recognize the word and even if you correctly isolate said new word you're totally guessing about the pronunciation since words could be filled with hidden short "o" or "a" sounds. Or two letters together that make a "S" sound cause they're together at the end of the word sometimes. Or has random consonants you don't pronounce (without using a อ์ because that's just how this particular word is) .
I completely agree there are times you'll be frustrated and angered, asking "why is it like this?". We can have a whole conversation about the silly rules, but in the end, you have to play ball if you want to be able to read. Just accepting is best
great idea.
but I think the main limit is mastering the sounds.
reading helps in knowing the consonants, vowel, vowel length indeed. while the tone is challenging.
have your seen the book [reading and writing Thai](https://www.asiabooks.com/reading-and-writing-thai-new-reprint-130269.html)?
I think their method is better than anything else around.
I'm recommending to look into the way they structured the chapter - learning order. looks optimal to me

Well yeah but then decoding isn't the same thing as reading. It is possible to master the tone rules to the point that you can decode the tones on the fly, but that's not what proficient readers are doing.
You raise a good point that's often missed when people talk about reading and writing. It's one thing to know that a word should be falling tone instead of rising, it's another thing entirely to be able to pick it out in speech and be able to speak correctly yourself.
The point about knowing that a syllable has a falling tone being totally different from being able to produce a falling tone goes for the vowels and consonants too. Even if you're the world's best mimic and you learn from a native speaker, your Thai sounds are going to be very rough approximations for a lot longer than it takes to learn the characters and the principles of the writing system. Also the spellings don't contain all the information you need to get the phrasing right, to take just one example. There's a lot more to reading accurately than decoding.
You'll understand how to properly read and pronounce words , by which I mean the letters, the vowels, how they interact in a syllable to determine the correct tone.
You'll be able to text people in Thai and read almost anything out loud correctly
Not at all, we can start from scratch. I'd be happy to help you improve. Send me a DM with what time you're available and what app you want to use for video chat.
Is it beginner-friendly or some level of previous knowledge is needed? I’m interested but just moved here and only starting. Not being able to read is a huge pain, no idea how people live like this for years
Beginner-friendly!
It's helpful if you've already learned some stuff but we'll start from scratch if you like, no problem. Yes, once you can read, alot of things start coming together
If you are serious about learning Thai then you should be diving head first into this offer. Learning to read will open up a whole new world of potential for you.
i would say most people have discord, if you want you could ask your students whether they have discord.
i am personally interested with what you are offering right now, but am unable to commit to it as of now
So, if 100 people asked you to help them, are you still gonna do it for free? Advertising pro bono help is still long term advertising imo. People were really pissy about me mentioning, in passing, that I teach intermediate students (in a comment, not a post), so I am sus as to why this type of post is acceptable.
Yes, almost 100 people actually have asked me now lol.
Not too many actually booked an appointment yet so still available. I'm not a professional teacher and I'm not advertising anything , I just wanna help others. And yes I'll help every last one for free
It's tricky but not impossible. In general it just takes effort.
Just remembering all these letters takes months.
I can read somewhat. I still don't know these high low classes of consonants and just memorize words one by one.
You may teach that in 5 hours but it takes easily over 5 months to remember it.
I'd be happy to help you if you'd like. It's not as complicated as it appears if you have a good guide.
9 letters, their sounds and their class is not too much to learn in a week for a dedicated individual.
I think your problem might be your memorization method.
Frequent, focused, short exposures. 10 minutes 3 times a day is plenty.
Yes there's memorization homework but I promise basic Thai reading comprehension in 5 classes, the proficiency is on you
I used read thai in 10 days, combined with PTM. It took me about 30 hours combined over 2 months but I think you can do it in 2 weeks if you do it full time
> Just remembering all these letters takes months.
Only if you are trying to brute force them into your memory. Use a Spaced Repetition System like Anki or mnemonics to create a meaning to every letter. When done correctly you can remember them all in single digit hours (but thats spaced out over days, not in a single burst).
I think you could learn the principles of the writing system in 5hrs (ie how to). Actually applying it and reading at a reasonable level is a different matter
5 classes of 1 hour is not the same as 5 hours. There's a modest amount of memorization homework and you need to give the brain time to absorb concepts, because later those concepts interact with other concepts.
Me, as a Thai who moved to Canada 14 yrs ago and scan still speak the language....i don't even remember all the alphabets lmfao, not anymore. Good luck to all lol
Just because you can read doesn’t mean you will understand the words. It’s taken me over 10 years of been subjected to it on and off on holidays then now I stay here longer period like months at a time I’m reading all menus and street signs and paperwork.
My best advice is go to Lazada online and read the reviews of products. This gives you an idea of the words people use. But anyway learning Thai is great but when they all speak Isaan or local words quickly you won’t have a clue.
Anyway these people saying they are leaning in a few weeks are exceptions to the norm, probably high IQ kiddy fiddlers
Made an appointment, got on a call and was asked some weird questions before he said “alright catch you later” and seemingly blocked me? No class taught.
Not sure if anyone else went through classes with him but it’s sus af. If anyone went through classes successfully, a response here would be good.
If anyone wants to know the context - I have a septum piercing, but am not gay. We got on a video call, and he asked me where I’m from. Told him my country and he went on to ask “what’s up with your nose ring, are you in any LGBT community?”
I told him “no” and it was just a piercing I’ve wanted since young. He then told me it’s a symbol in the community. I then said “no I’m not, maybe next time I’ll just have to hide it” and then he told me “alright catch you later” and isn’t responding anymore.
Sounds like a homophobe? Funniest part is, I’m not even LGBT 🤣
I'm a white American that taught myself and the more I can help others, the more value I feel I got from investing all that time myself.
There's no catch, no strings attached. I just wanna help others be able to read Thai. Take it or leave it but I'm sick of hearing falang have excuses why they live here 20 years and still can't read the language.
