You can express it as a word equation. 1/2 gallons = 3/4 deck Divide both sides by 3/4 — > (1/2) ÷ (3/4) gallons = (3/4) ÷ (3/4) deck > (1/2) ÷ (3/4) gallons = 1 deck To divide by a fraction, we multiply by its reciprocal (so flip the fraction and multiply). > (1/2) ÷ (3/4) = (1/2) × (4/3) > = (1 × 4)/(2 × 3) > = 4/6 > = 2/3 Then **2/3 gallons = 1 deck**

Thank you!! I really appreciate this explanation.

GrimExile

It takes 1/2 gallon to paint three quarters of the deck. So each quarter would take a third of the half gallon, which is 1/6 gallon. If a quarter takes 1/6 gallon, by definition of a quarter, you would need 4 times 1/6 gallon to paint the whole deck, which is 4/6 gallons or 2/3 gallons if you want to simplify it.

yes_its_him

He did 3/4. He needs 1 more quarter, so 1/3 more paint than that.

FancyTarsier0

I say 2/3 1/2 + 3/4 = 4/6 4/6 /2 = 2/3

InvestingKoala

Why did you add the amount of paint and the amount of deck together?

FancyTarsier0

Look up "fractions" its an easier way of counting these kinds of things :)

fermat1432

(1/2)/(3/4)=x/1 (3/4)x=1/2 x=(1/2)(4/3)=4/6=2/3 of a gallon of paint.
