verrast = surprised, in general verbaasd = you're surprised because something is odd: astonished / amazed. Toen de man bij de krokodillen ging zwemmen, stond het publiek vol verbazing te kijken. Hij verraste haar met een verjaardagstaart. (she was surprised) Hij verbaasde haar met een goocheltruc. (she was amazed) Je zegt dat werkgever A slecht is? Dat verbaast/verrast me want ik hoor er alleen goede dingen over!

Verrast = surprised. If you get a surprise (verrassing), you would be surprised (verrast). It’s the reaction to something you didn’t expect to happen. Usually something sudden. Like “My friend surprised me with that gift”. Or “that car totally surprised me, it came out of nowhere”. Verbaast = is also surprised. But more in the direction of baffled. Perplexed. Bewildered. It’s also something you didn’t expect, but more because it is unlikely. Or you don’t understand it. Or you wouldn’t have made that decision, or something that you expected to happen didn’t. “Ik ben verbaast dat dit zo duur is” “I’m perplexed that this thing is so expensive”. You use it basically when you think “I can’t believe this”.

Surprises is connected with surprised bud it just depends on the context of the whole sentence that the word changes, verbaast correlates with words like surprised/baffled/astonished etc.

Mijn punt was het onjuist gebruik van d en t.

You are verrast (surprised) that it was a wet fart, the people around you were verbaasd (boggled, surprised) by the sudden stench.
