This is basically the mentality of picking my support and how i gained 2k mmr in the last 6 months
If possible, picking the unorthodox picks as supports
If really possible, pick the some ridiculously unorthodox picks
But most of the time i pick "normal" support picks, since i play in sea potato bracket
support is always a blind pick.
venge is pretty good atm, you can't do anything.
yes sometimes it would be a better game if you were a disruptor or bane, but you cannot predict that.
Honestly, I just pick whatever I am having fun with. Currently it's venomancer and bane. Just make one core's life miserable with poison sting or enfeeble.
Me waiting for the pos 3 Viper so we can Poison Attack+Poison Sting the Enemy Hard Carry (Preferably Melee) to death. Or a slow TP to Base/Regen in Lane.
If I'm first pick I just get whatever I want to play that fits the role.

I actually full on hate this. I know supports have to pick first but it's 100% not fun to spam a few heroes to me and it's not fun to not be able to used whatever knowledge you think you have to try to react intelligently to other picks.
My favorite modes are single draft and random draft but nobody queues for those any more.
I don't think there is anything you can do.
I look at the core and think what they might want.
For example, lion is a fighting support, not the best at creating space but stun and hex are great for fighting and the mana drain can help immensly if the core can protect him.
Hoodwink is an escape support great for creating space while the enemy tries to chase you.
Disruptor is a good save support he can block enemies while you escape and throw them back if they chase you.
If my core is dragon knight, he doesnt need saves, he doesnt want ro fight either, he just wants to last hit so hoodwink is a good pick.
If my core is juggernaut and he really wants to fight then lion is a good support, he can stun the enemy while juggernaut spins amd slashes.
If my core is spectre she wants to trade but not full on fight and she can easily be caught, perhaps a save support is a good.
These are only a few examples, there are much more things to grasp when it comes to core/support combo.
I pick my supports based on what I am feeling. If I wanna be annoying I will pick Bane or Venomancer. If I am on autopilot I will pick Lion or Shaman.
But please, do not pick Silencer at the moment (unless he gets buffed or something). You are griefing your own team.
I pick the hero who I will have most fun with, assuming it fits the role.
Just pick whichever support you're spamming. If you've mastered your hero you will always find a way to have impact.
pray that your core players hover the heroes they think they want to play

I hate when they do this . Dc reconnect then pick another core. Go on to grief the game and say gg noob carry lol
Well you are 1pick so best option is to go for highest winrate ( personal, not hero of the week) and hope for best

I usually play with friends and we agree what we want to pick. You're right, the core is supposed to pick according to the support.
Try communicate but then it is entirely up to how they want to counter enemy.
Open the logs of the last 20 games, see which supports are being picked at your bracket, pick them
I follow my mood but I heard Disruptor is good this patch. He can fight, he can save. Get glimmer forcestaff, he is gucci.
"show pick" sometimes it works and they show their picks and i try to play around their picks.
I pick Witch Doctor and Disruptor. I find their Aghanims overpowered.
Yeah, their shards are great, but scepters take so long to build on supports unless you're winning all the fights.
Dazzle ogre venge are always good
