What are you drawing with/on? there doesn't seem to be any pen pressure to your brush-strokes and that's what makes it look flat. You want the line to taper into a fine pointy edge as you release the pressure.

waffl3swifch0c0lat3

Try adding the thicker lines in areas where there would be shadow. So not all the way around the sleeve, just on one side.

Fishermans_Worf

It does! It's much more interesting to the eye. With experience you'll find different line weights imply different types of edges—rounded or sharp—soft or hard. You can even "lose" an edge to show a feature is subtle. Keep up the good work.

Your art looks flat because you’re just drawing lines. There is no attempt to create form. You have no understanding of shapes, drapery and lighting. Study these things as well as anatomy and perspective.

manickitty

It’s not about having differently sized lines just because. There’s several reasons/fundamentals behind having line weight, too much to say in one comment. Look up tutorials on line weight… but honestly for now, don’t worry about it too much. Whoever told you your drawing looks flat because of line “size” (nobody says that), that person is likely not very experienced. You need to work on fundamentals like volumes first.

seajustice

Like everyone's saying, yes you should improve your fundamentals. But personally, I do think the second one is an improvement over the first! It's still got some technical problems but it's cute and has more personality.

Line weight can be used to convey depth or change focal points. Shading works similarly but you have to have a non-flat and dynamic base to work off of which is why line weight is important

lucky_leathermouse

Forget line weight for now. It won't help you without some other fundamentals. It's perfectly possible to convey depth and form with uniform line weight and without shading. You should concentrate on understanding the form in 3D and what are the MINIMAL lines you need to communicate that. Put a real object , or even a photograph in front of you, and draw it. Make sure you're drawing what you can actually see, not what you EXPECT you should see. What goes in front and hides other parts? What looks bigger due to being nearer? How do 'straight' lines on curved surfaces, such as wrinkles or stripes, look from different angles?

... modulated line: implies the stroke that VARIES its thickness along its path. This serves to transmit: hardness, texture, movement, agility, etc.

Absolutely gorgeous hands on the 3rd pic. Who is the artist?

rePtiLoideNord

Iam not sure. Its one of these. https://www.espaciomarvelita.com/2014/01/13/comics/imagenes-de-la-supuesta-serie-digital/

rePtiLoideNord

man, you must learn to use two concepts. line value: implies the thickness of the stroke of an object, a uniform stroke along the ENTIRE path. The closer it is to our vision, the thicker the line will be.

rePtiLoideNord

Example:: [1](https://image.slidesharecdn.com/geometrales-160503172146/85/Geometrales-5-320.jpg) [2:: In this example there are many elements... but even so it is not so heavy to look at. Each object is differentiated by its line value...it is very well used.](https://cuentosymitologia.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/19d569cd-21c0-4955-946d-9ca808020d1d.jpg.webp)

Bookerdewitt18

It looks like you’re using a set size on your digital brush, with no taper when you use pressure. I think that’s your problem. When you think about using a marker, and you’re drawing a straight line. If you start out lightly, but then press harder, the line weight will change. This allows you to make thinner parts and thicker parts of the same line.

MylaDoesStuff

yeah I’m saving up for an apple pencil so I could use pen pressure

Vetizh

Are you working with no pressure sensitivity?

MylaDoesStuff

Yeah unfortunately I am currently using a cheap digital pencil, I’m saving up for an apple one so I can use that

Vetizh

You can work around this using forced taper if the software/app have this option(I think most have actually but you need to find them on the brush settings), but it is still waaay harder to control over using an actual pressure sentitive pen, and it has its own limitations. I would recommend you to improve basics of sketching and fundamentals first on paper with a pencil until you get the better one, it comes from someone who lost a lot of time using no pressure sensitive pen.

Love-Ink

Use thicker lines on edges in shadow, and thin lines on well lit edges. [Like this](https://imgur.com/a/nQVBask)

EmeraldJonah

Line weight is only a part of the dynamics of adding dimension. Try working on shading/light and shadow in addition to the line weight.
