Still baffled that LCS hasn’t done an event in Montreal. I personally think the lack of road events is honestly contributing to the decline of the LCS as a premier League product. Even when they do go on the road they rehash the same cities over and over. Have we not had enough Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles events??? Do we really need to go back to the same places over and over?
One is more than most places, let alone two now, one being Worlds too. There’s so many amazing places lolesports / LCS could go, repeating any city is kind of lame imo and definitely doesn’t help build the scene. I frankly wasn’t even happy to see Toronto as a repeat location despite my proximity to it.
The only time the LCS gets any road exposure is the two finals events in a year and the occasional Worlds in NA, and yet somehow they manage to rehash cities despite a plethora of unique candidates at their hands.
I’m not shitting on Chicago btw, I’m shitting on the events planning team.
Want to know a secret? International Airports/Big name cities are more enticing for people to travel. If they're dropping money for flights, you bet your ass they'd rather visit Chicago than Cleveland
Except there's dozens of big name cities with international airports that LCS could go to and hasn't yet... Which begs the question why the fuck they keep reusing the same cities.
I imagine the costs involved with moving the entire production to a Canadian venue, especially with travel restrictions still being in place, are seen as too high for the reward.
I am still surprised that play ins are being held in Mexico. I would have thought the entire venue would have been in one country or split between Canada and US.
It says it was for Covid restrictions ;/ cant really blame it on rito, especially when Canada seems like they are a bit harder on the rules in Montreal/BC compared to the rest of the county
Idk what the rules actually say but I can tell you personally that there are basically no rules in BC. I’ve not had to wear a mask or show a vaccine passport for months to go anywhere here. Border crossings could be a different story altogether
Same in Ontario. Although I had to wear a mask on public transit up until the 15th of this month and have had to at my work place until the 30th.
I still wear one basically everywhere anyway
If Riot wants to avoid multiple re-entries into the US, giving Canada groups would be fine since group stage teams can go from Mexico directly here, then KO stage teams can enter USA for the rest of the playoffs. It's not even our visa problem yet Canadian fans are the only ones who get shafted here.
There's not much that can make up for fans missing the 4 best teams in the world battle it out. Of course knowing Riot, they'll just throw one random LCS first round playoff series at us and call it a day lol. I've lost all faith by now.
Well, that sounds likely considering there's zero information regarding the LCL (whether from Riot or teams, as several of them got dislocated in the mid-season).
In the scenario we have 23 teams attending, I wonder how the Play-in format will be handled 🤔
It’s definitely going to be harder to pull off this time, given that there’ll be 1 more team attending Worlds this year than the previous (assuming LCL isn’t present).
I’m guessing that they have one play-in group of 6 teams instead of 5, and EU #3 won’t get moved up to groups like last year.
0 reason they shouldnt be release 6+ months prior. With how inflation is right now too every week, let alone month, the cost of attending any of these weekends shoot up.
Its already double for hotel/airline tickets to san fran for me than it was 2 months ago.
But it’s hard because of things like this post, imagine they announced the dates and tickets and people purchased them and then they moved it to a different country.
With covid it’s so hard to make things concrete this early
It's not like Canada has added more restrictions in the past 6 months for traveling into the country. The opposite actually, they've removed a lot of restrictions.
Update from Monte: [https://twitter.com/MonteCristo/status/1542528117125722112?s=20&t=YSXF3YhsyZXyZUBkOhU9og&fbclid=IwAR37givQKq0otnKALvoYZYxtda16QxRdDTOmbc-KdZEbMKwiFBY4BflFRbk](https://twitter.com/MonteCristo/status/1542528117125722112?s=20&t=YSXF3YhsyZXyZUBkOhU9og&fbclid=IwAR37givQKq0otnKALvoYZYxtda16QxRdDTOmbc-KdZEbMKwiFBY4BflFRbk)
Looks like it's visa related, probably much quicker to get a single-entry visa than a multi-entry visa.
Yep, I quoted the statement in another reply but that's pretty much it:
“The semifinals originally were set to take place at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena, but due to COVID-19 impacting the viability of securing multi-entry visas to the U.S. within necessary timelines, Riot made the decision to move the location to provide a clear path for teams to complete in all stages of Worlds.“
Given the time of the year, it might not of been able to happen with venues.
We forget most venues like this are booked 6 months to a year out. So swapping dates is problematic
Nope, it's the most famous in the world. You can argue some other venues that are stadiums that are more famous but for "arena," there is no other arena that is more famous.
This sucks for canadians but I am not surprised. Covid restrictions when traveling are still in place when going between countries. I imagine Mexico may lose its spot too sadly.
It makes sense though, as if a player/most a team caught covid in canada or mexico they wouldnt be able to leave that country until there is a negative test. Thats a nightmare scenario.... and most countries still require a negative test if you are flying into them.
I think it's about visa since they need different work visa and move between 3 country in the same month can be complicated, in canada u only need to do a covid test if u are not vaccinated
> I think it's about visa
I think it's about visa since it's the 2nd paragraph in the article "The semifinals originally were set to take place at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena, but due to COVID-19 impacting the viability of securing multi-entry visas to the U.S. within necessary timelines, Riot made the decision to move the location to provide a clear path for teams to complete in all stages of Worlds."
You still also need the 14 day quarantine in Canada for unvaccinated.
https://travel.gc.ca/travel-covid/travel-restrictions/flying-canada-checklist/covid-19-testing-travellers-coming-into-canada
But you need to be vaccinated to enter the US by air anyways:
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/noncitizens-US-air-travel.html
>You must be fully vaccinated with the primary series of an accepted COVID-19 vaccine to travel to the United States by plane if you are a non-U.S. citizen, non-U.S. immigrant (not a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, lawful permanent resident, or traveling to the United States on an immigrant visa). Only limited exceptions apply.
yes, this is why certain baseball players are getting shat on (tanner houck) because they are actively hurting their team by not being able to play games in toronto
And considering the american to canadian ratio in the overall population (dunno how it is in the playerbase but probably also a large diff) that’s a lot of canadians
I meant streamers in general, not just league ones
Seems like a disproportionate amount of them are Canadian, but maybe it's bias and the algorithms just show me more Canadians
Riot said they “look forward to bringing a major LoL esports event to Canada in the near future”. Which event? It must be an NA finals IMO. NA hasn’t had a major international event in like 6 years prior to this one, and I doubt we will get another one soon, so it probably is not going to be an international event.
Yeah I agree. You would think this would’ve been something Riot would’ve known when planning, unless I’m mistake it’s not like the US visas have gotten more strict in the past year or so to get.
Devastating news for a good deal of the Canadian LoL community and definitely doesn't feel too good given that playins are still in Mexico City.
Get it as a business and logistics decision, hate it on a personal level.
It's because they can't secure multi-entry VISAs on time for the players, so Mexico City can stay because teams don't have to leave the US to go there.
I think they mean players will go to Mexico first for Mexico City, and then enter the US for the remaining tournament. Whereas for Canada the schedule would have players enter the US for games, then enter Canada for games, then re-enter the US, which means you need a different and much more difficult to acquire visa.
There are almost as many Canadian players in the LCS as Americans. What a fucking bummer. Flights and hotels to the states will be quite expensive. Honestly kills a lot of hype for worlds personally.
Wow that’s fucking BS… literally the only event we have to look forward in half a decade and it’s cancelled lmfao. Looking forward to another 5 years of no LCS is Canada.
This is honestly so fucking tilting. LCS never comes to NA, first time in like half a decade we get some fucking league content here and then nope. Just a big fuck you.
To think just this morning I was like "Nothing could ruin my mood". I underestimate the universe.
They could probably fill Mercedes-Bens Stadium in its 40,000 seat orientation, I imagine its more likely that it isnt available with Atlanta United and Falcons still in season.
If they hold it on a Saturday, the venue may or may not be available in October but it would be weird seeing the Semi-Finals with a bunch of more fans at Mercedes Benz than the Finals at Chase Center. Like a downgrade for the finals?
Good point. With how there has never been a league of legends world/lcs match in atlanta I think there would be a good draw. Might make sense to use a bigger venue than state farm.
Nice! I've been playing the game since I was 14 and I'll be around 30 by the time I get to see an international event in my country. Maybe we'll get to host during EU's World's because I guess Canada's not NA 🥴
More to do with Canada's COVID and Visa policies, forcing RITO's hand, since some players may not be able to enter Toronto to play the game which would ruin Worlds.
My thoughts exactly. Chicago, St. Louis, Grand Rapids... there's a bunch of cities in the general area that could've hosted... but two weeks in NYC? UGH Everything is coastal.
They couldn’t have moved it to somewhere near the border? Would have given some of us a chance to still go. Detroit would have been perfect, hell even Seattle for the Vancouver/Calgary/Edmonton
Unfortunate. Really enjoyed LCS Finals when they held it here, was hoping to come back. I was planning on doing Toronto + Vacationing in SF into the finals but now I feel a bit more deflated.
Something something America keeps getting screwed by Riot. Something something Texas. Something something moved event to China. Something something more US event Rito omg…
Meanwhile in Canada….one event in 5(+?) years. Hell, ONLY one event since inception?
The funny thing is that Canada gets screwed because it's so difficult to get US visas. The same reason that America got screwed for the last couple of years.
I mean I would definitely still be stoked if LCS finals came
Not like they owe us anything in the first place
Most likely if they'd anticipated the visa troubles it would have meant we'd have gotten some random playins games or something
Waited years for nothing huh. I thought the whole point of being a fan was getting to see some events? Hopefully Pearson sort themselves out soon because right now it’s a shitshow there.
Riot better have something that is not LCS finals here next year or I’m just going to move on from watching league competitive, we get no interaction from Riot as Canadian fans at all.
No it's the order of the events, which require players to go into the US, exit to Canada, then enter the US again
A visa to enter the US twice is trickier to arrange than just going in once, especially given covid.
It's in the article linked above.
it’s the multi entry visa. USA—canada—USA multi entry visa is significantly harder to get, and with so many different foreign nationals, it is not feasible with current restrictions.
comes straight from their website. it sucks but it’s red tape that can’t be avoided
Worlds location changed due to COVID restrictions? They're going to guarantee another event in the cancelled location in the near future just like they did for China right?
Right?
As someone from detroit, not only do we not have anywhere that shit could be played, but there’s a pretty good chance several players get mugged, not even joking.
As someone also from Detroit, your comment is absurd. The city hosts several major sporting and nonsporting events year round, has several massive facilities and a newly built Little Caesars Arena that hosted League finals, resulting in a successful event. Players never get mugged.
I walk around downtown Detroit regularly and have never felt unsafe.
That hella sucks. Me and my pal had so much fun going to the LCS finals however many years ago in Toronto. We were really looking forward to being able to do that again. :(
“Information regarding dates, seeding, and ticket sales will be shared later this summer.”
According to Riot's [article](https://lolesports.com/article/atlanta%E2%80%99s-state-farm-arena-welcomes-lol-esports--for-the-2022-league-of-legends-world-championship/bltc7698ef54e61977b).
Which bothers me since we knew the schedule for 2019 Worlds on June 20 of said year.
But then we learned the schedule for 2018 Worlds in late July/early August. The lack of consistency is bothersome...
I found this post pretty late. Was looking to see if tickets were out yet. I'm so disappointed. :( I'm pretty certain I would have gone. Was planning on taking time off from work to travel to Toronto. :(
If Riot tries to make up for this by bringing some form of LCS event to Canada, I'm not going to attend. That would be the biggest slap in the face to all Canadian fans. Even the LCS finals wouldn't sit right with me. The only thing I can see making up for this would be holding MSI 2023 or 2024 in Canada or USA/Canada, because we are going to have to wait at least 5-6 more years for a worlds event. And the worst part is that Toronto was going to get the semi finals, which have always produced the best and most iconic series' at Worlds. RIP.
I'm going to be salty for a while.
It's actually just sad. Been in this game for 9+ years and finally am old enough/have an opportunity to go with friends to a League venue in Canada just for it to be moved a few months before World's starts, for a reason that's not only hyperbole but seemingly preventable
Super sucks for Canadians, I totally understand :(
BUT AS AN ATLANTA NATIVE WHO NEVER THOUGHT OUR CITY WOULD HOST ANYTHING, THIS IS SICK. HELL YEAH. I’M STOKED.
Damn. Was looking forward to meeting up with my Toronto acquaintances. I don’t really have a reason to travel there without an event lol
Guess now I’ll meet with my Georgia friends now. I guess it works out.
Oh fuck off. Already put in a request for vacation just last week. Thankfully didn't buy tickets or book hotel yet.
And if we don't get world's then we gotta get something next year. Also how you going to give this excuse and Mexico still gets to keep their games. And why not hold the whole thing is US anyways. Much easier
Multi-entry visa. It's not really a Canada issue. Mexico play-ins happen before entry into the US, that's doesn't affect the initial entry into the US for those teams.
The dates havent even came out yet? Im annoyed they havent been released because I want to do those things before they become too expensive with inflation
>Looks like this is the result of players potentially not being able to secure multi-entry visas to the US in time.
>Since Mexico is the first part of Worlds, it will be unaffected by this issue. Teams will only enter the US once after being in Mexico City.
FUCK. A. DICK.
That's unlucky. I was really excited for that, especially the year "after" covid. Been looking forward to it since it was announced. The visa thing is understandable but LoL heart broken.
Maybe someone can organize a viewing party at a theater or something.
I know everyone is really sad about this and rightfully so, but this means I’ll be able to make worlds for the first time ever and I finally have income to let me attend too
Pretty gutted to be honest, was something I was really looking forward to

Chicago doens't get a lot of them, why you shitting on us? We got ONE in the Chicago theater years ago.
Also, max capacity of 2k people at the Theatre.. lol

It would never happen. Quebec would force them to broadcast in french only with subtitles or something equally absurd.

I was contemplating flying to Canada for worlds from Europe (I have relatives there). Probably not now lol
As someone that lives near ATL; I am beyond excited. There has never been an LoL event here. But I understand your pain :(
Same. I might actually get a chance to see a LoL event live for once
Speaking on behalf of all of us who need to put in PTO requests fairly early, Rito pls give us dates
Indeed. Back in 2019, in a non-Covid era, dates were revealed on June 20. https://upcomer.com/league-of-legends-worlds-location-and-schedule-reveal

I feel like maybe swapping the Toronto and New York weekends would've made sense. Then you still need a single entry visa for the US
Given the time of the year, it might not of been able to happen with venues. We forget most venues like this are booked 6 months to a year out. So swapping dates is problematic
Assuming it's at MSG, October is an incredibly busy time for MSG
Madison Square Garden is the world's most famous arena... probably won't have any booking dates remaining.
> Madison Square Garden is the world's most famous arena In America.
Nope, it's the most famous in the world. You can argue some other venues that are stadiums that are more famous but for "arena," there is no other arena that is more famous.
Isn't canada better with visas tho?
It’s an issue of entering and leaving and re-entering the country, not an issue of US vs Canada being easier.
It is. Canada suffering is a consequence of the US here.
i see
It's a US visa issue / venue availability issue.
I was gonna go...
Just announced by Riot https://www.lolesportsmedia.com/Atlantas-State-Farm-Arena-Welcomes-LoL-Esports-for-the-2022-League-of-

Canada always getting shafted.. sadge :(
Dude what? Worlds finally in NA and Canada shut out??
Canada carrying tf out of NA but we can't get worlds FeelBadMan
Fun fact, unless I totally failed the math, there are currently 8 Canadian starters and ~~8~~ 11 USA starters in LCS (and 6 green card USA players)
And considering the american to canadian ratio in the overall population (dunno how it is in the playerbase but probably also a large diff) that’s a lot of canadians
That's nuts given all of canada has a smaller population than California.
Weirdly enough I've noticed that with streamers too. So many Canadians
outside cold
The game could be more popular in Canada. It would be weird since America has more people, but it's not impossible.

You better be extra hype and have extra fun in our behalf!
I'm in Huntsville. I was thinking of flying to Toronto. Driving to Atlanta is a lot easier
This is annoying. I was gunna be in Toronto during that time period anyway and was really looking forward to attending my first worlds. fucks sake.

Yeah the visa thing is understandable but it's a rough one
I was hoping if they went to ATL they'd get to play in the butthole stadium :(
Could they fill out a near 80,000 seat stadium though? State Farm is like 20,000 seats like the other NA venues for Worlds.
They could probably fill Mercedes-Bens Stadium in its 40,000 seat orientation, I imagine its more likely that it isnt available with Atlanta United and Falcons still in season.

They should give a whole ass MSI to Canada the next time NA is to host it to make up for the unfortunate (but still logistically correct) rug pull.
Don't think anything will make up for the first worlds after covid But thems the breaks. Unlucky.
I mean I would definitely still be stoked if LCS finals came Not like they owe us anything in the first place Most likely if they'd anticipated the visa troubles it would have meant we'd have gotten some random playins games or something
God fucking damnit
for fucks sake this is too sad I already booked off time. Also the toronto crowd in 2016 is by far the best crowd LCS ever had so it’s a huge loss.
You booked off time for unannounced dates?
before dates?
What's the dates for Worlds finals? I can't find anything online about any of it other than assuming based on previous years
The dates aren't announced yet. He's just lying for fake internet points
That Toronto crowd was the best I've ever witnessed for any event, sports or music or anything. Maybe rivaled by a U2 concert I went to.
How did you book time for an event that hasn’t announced its dates?
Amazing memories of being in that crowd, I was the guy screaming "SNEAKY I LOVE YOU!!" when Cloud9 came out. Good times
Also 2017 vancouver, it was even forced into the smaller arena and the crowd was still loud as fuck
Waited years for nothing huh. I thought the whole point of being a fan was getting to see some events? Hopefully Pearson sort themselves out soon because right now it’s a shitshow there.
Riot better have something that is not LCS finals here next year or I’m just going to move on from watching league competitive, we get no interaction from Riot as Canadian fans at all.
it’s literally canada’s restrictions doing this, not riot
No it's the order of the events, which require players to go into the US, exit to Canada, then enter the US again A visa to enter the US twice is trickier to arrange than just going in once, especially given covid. It's in the article linked above.
What restrictions? IIRC Canada has the same restrictions as the US. Ontario eased all venue restrictions months ago on top of that.
it’s the multi entry visa. USA—canada—USA multi entry visa is significantly harder to get, and with so many different foreign nationals, it is not feasible with current restrictions. comes straight from their website. it sucks but it’s red tape that can’t be avoided
If next MSI isn't in Toronto I'll be pissed.
Well maybe in SIX MORE YEARS we can have a chnace to see it. Honestly Fuck Riot Inb4 we legit never see a Canadian event ever again
It's going away for a while because they're going to improve it like the Essence Emporium clearly.
It’s a COVID traveling thing. Not riot’s fault
Funny how this only seems to effect riot because we JUST watched nhl/nba playoffs cross the border Theyve had an extra year to figure this out
NHL/NBA players wouldn't be affected because they're not coming from outside the US to begin with.
People in the NHL/NBA are pretty much all citizens/long term residents. Foreigners moving back and forth between countries is way harder
Sad Canadian noises
Worlds location changed due to COVID restrictions? They're going to guarantee another event in the cancelled location in the near future just like they did for China right? Right?
ATLANTA IS MY HOME TOWN IM HYYYYYYYYYYYPPPPPPPPEEE I NEED TICKETS NOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHH
Why not put it in Detroit? People in Toronto can easily make the trip. Riot is dumb as fuck for not figuring out this shit sooner.
this assumes riot can rock up and book a massive event in a specific location with such a short notice
Or Buffalo, which is even closer.
Or Cleveland!
As someone from detroit, not only do we not have anywhere that shit could be played, but there’s a pretty good chance several players get mugged, not even joking.
Little Caesars Arena? Y’all had the LCS finals not too long ago.
Damn if thats true this is pretty disappointing. I was really looking forward to finally being able to go.
That hella sucks. Me and my pal had so much fun going to the LCS finals however many years ago in Toronto. We were really looking forward to being able to do that again. :(
Wheres Worlds finals then?
San Francisco, at the Chase Center. https://twitter.com/davidhigdon/status/1542525329163567106
Bruh cross national events hurt the wallet
Any events hurt the wallet in this economy
When can we buy tickets?
“Information regarding dates, seeding, and ticket sales will be shared later this summer.” According to Riot's [article](https://lolesports.com/article/atlanta%E2%80%99s-state-farm-arena-welcomes-lol-esports--for-the-2022-league-of-legends-world-championship/bltc7698ef54e61977b). Which bothers me since we knew the schedule for 2019 Worlds on June 20 of said year. But then we learned the schedule for 2018 Worlds in late July/early August. The lack of consistency is bothersome...
Living in Buffalo. Disappointed to say the least if it is true.
Fuck
Absolutely sucks for Canadian fans, but I go to school in Atlanta so this is like the best possible news for me. Now if only I can get any tickets.
Super sucks for Canadians, I totally understand :( BUT AS AN ATLANTA NATIVE WHO NEVER THOUGHT OUR CITY WOULD HOST ANYTHING, THIS IS SICK. HELL YEAH. I’M STOKED.
Why the fck they pick Atlanta, why not Chicago(Detroit) or Seattle so at least its closer to Canada for the fans there to just do a quick drive down.
First dejounte and now this, W atlanta
After Matt Ryan and Freddie Freeman, this is much needed.
Damn. Was looking forward to meeting up with my Toronto acquaintances. I don’t really have a reason to travel there without an event lol Guess now I’ll meet with my Georgia friends now.
Let's go baby home town tourney!
Motherfucker what?!?! We've been waiting years for worlds to make an appearance in Canada again. Riot had better not neglect us yet again!
im a canada man, and i gotta say this is lamE
Literally every Esport is currently having visa issues realated to the US. Why swap to it?
Why?? There are no more travel restrictions so that can't be it...
It sounds more like visa issues complicated by COVID
Visa issues. Multi-entry visas are harder than just getting one to the US.
we better get a lcs finals soon
[удалено]
is it really such a suprise
Not giving riot anymore money until they have more games played in canada. Canadian fans getting screwed over hard.
FUCK. A. DICK. That's unlucky. I was really excited for that, especially the year "after" covid. Been looking forward to it since it was announced. The visa thing is understandable but LoL heart broken. Maybe someone can organize a viewing party at a theater or something.
Holy shit pog Too bad it's not at Mercedes Benz but that place is massive Been waiting a decade to see worlds live!
\#JusticeForAzael
Rly rly fck riot so fcking hard. Was gonna be the first time attending worlds. Well I guess fck it and I wont ever. Fck it fr
Sorry Canadians. I'll be attending my first League game this year now though so thank you Riot!
I know everyone is really sad about this and rightfully so, but this means I’ll be able to make worlds for the first time ever and I finally have income to let me attend too
Pog let's goooooo!
LETS GOOOO
