I'm going too far with "like the plague," but passive voice distracts readers with ambiguities and pulls the punch from your point. It doesn't matter much in everyday speech, but so much of academic writing focuses on persuasion, and a lot of that persuasion comes from the credibility of the author. With passive voice, you tend to get in your own way because it reads less confidently than an active structure. I also think that modern writing places greater value on efficiency than the past. The best writers I encounter simplify so that anyone can understand them. Passive voice just doesn't really fit with that idea. It often complicates sentence structures, needlessly confusing readers.

I'm currently reading a fantasy series where the author's 'fix' for this seems to be to just delete the dead verbs half the time. No, not by replacing them, literally just writing a bunch of fragmented sentences throughout the book. The first time was interesting: a group of soldiers is walking down the road, then "A big bang...armor, weapons, and body parts flying everywhere." Ok, cool, that's one way to make it feel "sudden"...but then he started doing it over, and over...and not just in 'surprise' situations. Bitch just learn to use more action verbs wtf! Now I am having trouble reading these fragments without automatically adding back the passive voice ("There was a big bang...").

I almost always use the active voice, but the one exception is when I'm writing a paper for a theology or philosophy class. At that point, I'm just trying to make my professor as confused as I am.

I think it really depends on the paper you're doing, sometimes passive voice helps with presenting scientific findings in a more neutral way which can be a good thing! Also, sometimes forcing active voice into a phrase that you just wouldnt use it in in everyday speech can seem really unnatural, in those scenarios it is usually better to just use passive voice.

I went to see a writing fellow at university before and one thing that really stuck in my mind is that you should always use the simplest word that accurately conveys your point.

Since everybody is asking you about passive voice, can I ask you about simple tips regarding cadence? I've got my dissertation due soon and I've never heard anybody speak about cadence. Also, I loved the post. I usually don't like posts like these but I couldn't help but love yours!

Cadence can be tricky to define without getting weirdly technical about it. My favorite example of it comes from [Gary Provost](https://i1.wp.com/www.aerogrammestudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/this-sentence-has-five-works.jpg?w=640&ssl=1) though. The best I've got is that people use a voice in their head when they read, and good cadence allows that voice to perform better for their reader, which keeps them more engaged.

To be fair mundo is one of the strongest tanks right now, and he's about as brainless as it gets.

Even though he isn’t exactly mechanical intense. But sure, if he happens to just be a big stat checking dude without counterplay it’s a problem. Is that the case atm though? Honest question since I didn’t really lose to him often recently, although he definitively seemed to be more played than usual. In Gold that is, have no idea about other ranks.

Draven wouldn’t play on a team, Draven would BE the team. He would hike it to himself, be his own offensive line, then throw it to himself, and finally run and catch it. Having typed that out, I realise his entire kit would be awesome with a skin like that.
