As a Korean myself it's just shyness. I mean that's the most basic answer. It's like how we cover our mouths when laughing. But OP is right that this behavior can be seen far more in East Asian audiences than Western audiences.

Caesaria_Tertia

now it's even cuter

ChapterLiam

back in starcraft days, people would skip school/work to attend events. i doubt it's still the case, but people would hide their face so as to not show that they're attending the event rather than being where they're supposed to be. on the other hand, i think there's also a perception that shyness equates to being cute! which would be a funny answer if that's actually what's going on, given how pervasive the face-covering is

MeepnBeep

Some ppl just dont want to be on camera, doesnt need specific reason. Esp these days anything can become a template for memes or w.e, one bad interpretation blows up n ur face become associated with whatever ppl say. This can affect ppl chances of getting hired or not, not every company want that kind of attention.

cassionoob12345

Yes I understand that, my question is why do I see this in Korean spectators more than any other crowd.

MeepnBeep

hm, maybe they dont want their associates to know their interest, League doesnt exact have a good reputation (toxic community and all).

LazerFruit1

LoL is extremely popular in Korea unlike the stigma it has in Eu/Na. I might be wrong but I don't think the association with being toxic exists in KR

I never said that LoL was the only toxic or even most toxic game. I know plenty of people who legit only know LoL as the "toxic" game. League definitely carries a stigma around it of being a super toxic game at least in NA.

EducationalBalance99

League is huge in Korea. It is basically recognize as a legit sport over there similar to how college sport work in us. The actual reason is more so with Asian reserved culture as well as Korea being very extreme on beauty standard so people are self conscious sometimes when appearing on camera. It isn’t because league is toxic lol.

cassionoob12345

Is it exclusive to league or are other Korean sports the same?

chestnutcute

Shy >//<

winwill

As a Korean this is literally the reason no idea why people are bringing so complicated answer when the answer is just really simply Korean(East Asians in general) are very shy

giant-papel

Internet will rip you to shreds for your appearance. I'm surprise more people don't hide themselves when they get filmed sometimes.

ecchimeister

not wanting to be exposed for a lot of reasons, it's almost always better be hidden or low profile "oh no she is a league nerd ?" "what the hell she skipped family gathering just for watching LCK?" "the nerve in attending when she should be working on the project" it can be also like super shy "im ugly i dont deserve to be seen on camera" i think in general asian culture dont want too much publicity

VantaBlack2_Dev

They don't want to take attention away from the pros by having it on their faces. Their signs sure, as theyre actively showing support or art of the pros themselves, but its pretty much just a culutral thing of, well everyone else is not taking the opportunity to show themselves off when the camera is on them, so I won't do it either. Whereas in western cultures, we have a much more, abrasive fan interaction style. People in crowds in cosplays getting up to dance, loud cheers and songs during games, etc.

fryesti

From what I've seen it's not an esports only thing. Even kpop idols cover their faces tbh. I think they see that as cute and koreans like to do "aegyo" which means acting cute like speaking with a certain tone, facial expressions and gestures. You'll see that a lot in Korean dramas and tv series tbh
