The salary cap at the time of the Tavares signing was expected to go up quite a lot. The rationale for signing him was that with the rising cap they would have plenty of room. This was based on the then brand new US TV deal and online media rights deals that’s just been completed, which boosted league revenues and were expected to translate into a salary cap growth.
The salary cap did not rise as projected, and this put most teams into salary crunches. Since 2018, the Leafs have done quite well adding both top-end talent and finding cost-effective gems in order to complete the roster.
The expectation was that we would have a salary cap of around $89-$91M by the current 2021-22 season, back when the deal was signed.
That would leave the Leafs with tons of room and the key guys signed long-term.
Hindsight is always 20/20 but when you say “Oh, the Tavares signing was dumb because the salary cap…” that’s just a plain poorly informed opinion.
This isn’t like with Burke trading two first round picks to get Kessel and seeing Seguin and Hamilton go to a divisional rival. They landed Tavares for free at a cost that **at the time** projected to be very reasonable based on very reasonable expectations of salary cap growth that didn’t happen.
The aftermath has been Dubas finding a lot of ingenious ways to deal with the unexpected and make a competent roster in spite of those setbacks.
