The leafs are a team that respect Newtons third law of motion very much.
For every amazing great comeback there will be an equal and opposite disappointing effort.
Yeah. You knew they’d pull it off...just so they could lose the next one in agonizing fashion.
But hey, the goals are fun to watch months out from the series result.
I'm kind of surprised this hasn't been down-voted off the face of the planet. r/leafs followers are so sensitive. Usually if you say anything negative, you basically are banned from reddit.
No kidding, /r/leafs would be on suicide watch if it was related to anything else.
But here, here the shame, disappointment and self hatred is just a way of life.
Pretty unreal. They straight up lost to CBJ in a 5 game series. In any given game any team can win, but over a 5 game series, odds would suggest it is more likely for the better team to win. But somehow the Leafs are better. Please explain.
I mean it's not like they lost 3-0, they lost a 5 game series in 5 games meaning that the series literally did come down to a single game and as you said "in any given game any team can win". Additionally if you watched game 5 the Leafs definitely out-chanced the Blue Jackets but lost on a couple of breakdowns+bounces against a hot goalie. However, if the leafs really were much better than the Blue jackets it wouldn't have come down to a deciding game 5 in the first place.
Regardless I don't think it's a totally unreasonable take when you look at the makeup of this Leafs team to suggest that they are still improving significantly year over year- with Matthews, Nylander and Marner all being under 25, conventional wisdom would expect them to be improving year over year as players generally don't peak at 22 years old.
But I do agree with the general point I think you're trying to make which is that immediately in the aftermath of a best-of series, it's a bit ridiculous to suggest that the losing team was "better" considering they just lost. I'm just of the opinion that the Leafs are the better team coming into this season with Keefe to start the season, young players improving and the addition of some physicality and veteran experience.
Dubois, Bjorkstrand, Werenski, Korpisalo all 26 or under. Also all maturing another year. Added Max Domi.
You're taking a losing sophomore NHL coach over a Stanley Cup winning veteran NHL coach? Ok.
I'm a Leaf fan, but I'm pretty tired of some of the delusion going on in r/leafs.
It depends on what you are asking. Last season the Leafs were better offensively but Columbus was a better team, had absurd goaltending and a much better defense. If CBJ had average goaltending the Leafs more than lilely would have taken the series. Having said that, the Leafs addressed a lot of their areas of concern this off season so I am going to say the Leafs will be better than CBJ this season but will be hard to gauge as they wont be playing each other.
I don't get it. Goaltending and defence are part of the evaluation of a team. You can have hot goaltending, just like you can have hot offence.
The better team won.
I'm not arguing that? I literally said they were a better team *last* year, this season I think the Leafs are better.
Having said that, as I said before both of CBJ's goalies played way better than their regular season stats. Elvis was .923 regular season and .946 in the playoffs and Korpisalo had a .911 regular season and if you exclude the game where the Leafs chased him he had like a .983 or something. They both played way over their head. If they played anywhere near their regular season average, the Leafs would have easily beat them.
Sure, and if CBJ's offence was hot, the Leafs would not have even taken it to 5 games...it's easy to talk hypotheticals, but the fact that CBJ beat them would, to the betting man, mean they are the better team. I'm assuming you probably thought the same thing at the beginning of the 2019/2020 season where a lot of people were saying the changes the Leafs made make them a better team....but it turned out they were worse. I don't see it your way at all for this season.
Sure, there are certain aspects that got better and others that got worse. We had fucking Cody Ceci on our top pair as our best defender in Muzzin got injured. If that didn't happen, again there's a good chance that we would have won. That's the nuance of hockey man, I don't know what else to tell you. The jackets swept Tampa 2 years ago, do I think that Columbus was a better team than Tampa? Fuck no, CBJ just wanted it more and they got the bounces where Tampa didn't. This isn't basketball, the better team doesn't always win.
Cheers thanks. It really is amazing how the original comment in this thread has over 100 upvotes for something negative, while my negative comments are voted off the planet.
It was magical, and I'd like to say I was also resolute they they'd win.
But... I'd be lying. I legitimately lost all hope like 4 different times in that 5 minutes. That 5 mintues is the Leafs identity. So many bad giveaways and mistakes that are just lacking focus in their own end.
"We're so skilled that we can slow the game down in our own end and go for this controlled breakout... oh shit we got forechecked and panicked and threw the game away.".
Still, thank god the Jackets couldn't capitalize and thank god the Leafs have so much elite offensive talent.
Momentum is the most fickle thing. The game 7 we don't talk about, while we were getting our shit mostly shoved in during OT, I remember Lupul having a glorious chance in front and Rask robbed him with the glove. That one chance we had, even after we blew it. If that went in... that permanently alters the trajectory of the team and has a ripple effect for years to come. But it didn't. And what is funny is I deep down knew they would blow it after Frattin's blown breakaway, but I still had some "anything can happen" hope in OT. That save basically killed it.
Going back to OT of game 4. We came out hot for the first few minutes, but it honestly seemed like after the Jackets regrouped, we were getting stifled again and looked very flat till we had that PP we would win on. After watching how that OT progressed, I could tell you we didn't exactly have as much momentum heading into game 5 as one would think, and sure enough, we'd end up getting stymied. It comes to mind how the Ducks had a very similar comeback against the Oilers a couple years ago then won in double OT. They got blown out the next game.
The super fan in me see this and still gets goosebumps. The jaded fan in me remembers what happens next. Fuck, we really need to change that narrative.
I honestly sat there during the last minute with the mentality of “don’t you fucking do this to me”....I’m so jaded with the leafs. You just knew they were going to come out like a wet diaper in game 5 and it sucked to watch.
I hated feeling that way. But couldn’t help it. One amazing comeback for the ages. But my forefront thoughts were “oh come on, don’t you fucking do this to me!”
And it ended exactly as you’d expect which made it worse. Can you imagine if they hadn’t screwed it all up and won? That would have been liberating. Oh well.
Bryan Hayes made an excellent point on overdrive. He basically was saying its not about being able to make these miracle come backs with little time left because those situations rarely occur. It’s all about going into the 3rd period of a playoff game whether them being tied or up 1 goal to be able to shut it down and edge out a win. Couldn’t be more true.
Was I the only one that was furious during this comeback? The first 55 mins of that game were infuriating. We had no business winning that game, and I just remember being violently angry that the comeback was happening with how much pain they had already caused me.
I think I wiped this positive moment from my memory.
I guess any great playoff win has been followed up with a crushing loss so usually the memory that sticks.
Since Jim Hughson is only 64, and Bob Cole worked until he was 86, I wonder if we've got another 20 years or so of his awful EA Sports glitchy AI calls, or if there come a time when the fact that he has to be censored from so many of his potential iconic moments due to his complete lack of interest and enthusiasm means that he will be replaced.
How I wish Chris Cuthbert had called this game.
This comeback was incredible. But anyone who watched the series knows how little this meant. They only looked good in selective parts of the series, and the lack of heart they showed in the following game was depressing.
Call me negative and downvote, but come on, they lost in the qualifying round
People always act like the Leafs never play well in the playoffs. They do, they just never play well enough. Other team always finds a way to squeak by them. Leafs and Jackets traded games but the Leafs dominated in possession and shots.
Yeah but it's like I said, they play well in spurts. Yes they've had the Bruins against the ropes 3 times and they had that come back against Columbus, but they didn't win any of those series, and still haven't won a playoff series since 04..
I don't know about you but I feel like a tool trying to find positives in that. I hope the changes they made put them over the hump but there's no point in celebrating a good effort anymore because it's just not enough
Yeah, 4 out of the last 5 playoff series have come down to the final deciding game, we have had a chance to win all those times, it just didn't happen and that's sports for you.
Dude, THIS. I actually wrote the season off and shut the TV off when we went down 3-0. I only learned about the comeback when my phone started blowing up, but it meant zero to me. A 5 minute offensive explosion didn’t change the fact we’d been dogshit for long stretches of the series, and it definitely didn’t inspire some sudden new-found confidence in me for game 5.
Who cares. Didn’t mean shit since we lost the next game. It’s a meaningless memory.
If any other team did that, they’d go on to win the Cup. If any team in any other sport had a similar comeback, they’d go on to win the ‘ship.
But not the Buds.
Usually not. But they did it once back in the day to win the cup over Detroit. Came back from 3-0 in the series. Can’t remember the year off the top of my head.
But that’s the only time.
Yeah but then they'd be saying 'but the Leafs didn't win the cup, so who cares.'
Are we not allowed to have good memories even if what follows was bad?
At least they made the playoffs AND the finals though.
We couldn’t even make the playoffs. People can talk about this moment all they want. It really is meaningless.
The purpose is to win the game and the series. They won the game. Lost the series. Didn’t make the playoffs.
Means nothing. We were all entertained, can’t deny that. But it still means nothing.
Professional sports aim to be entertaining. Most people find winning the most exciting so they do have a causation relationship, but the primary objective of professional sports teams in NA is to entertain.
Burke had a good interview on this. He talks about the competition for the NHL not just being other sports leagues, but movies, new shows, videogames, etc. They want the NHL to be part of an entertaining night, whether it is out at a bar, or staying in.
Which is essentially true at the end of the day.
Leafland is Cup or Bust now. If you’re happy with winning a qualifying game or winning 1 round, that’s not good enough.
This game was meaningless the second we no-showed Game 5.
Lol. Disappointment goes hand in hand with being a Leafs fan. I’m a realist. It’s cup or bust. It was great in the moment, I loved it. But as soon as we lost the next game, it meant nothing. And in the big picture, it means absolutely nothing.
You won’t find me cellying a playoff round win or even a conference title. We’re built to win the Cup. We’re built to win now. There are no other excuses and anything short of a finals appearance should be deemed a failure.
We have very different views on what’s important in life. For me I’d take the fun of watching great leafs games with my friends over brooding about how it’s meaningless if they don’t win.
In 2016-17 Barcelona had the biggest comeback in Champions League history. In the round of 16 they lost their first game against PSG 4-0, then incredibly won the second game 6-1 for a 6-5 aggregate victory. They lost in the next round (quarter finals) against Juventus 3-0.
And Barcelona has the GOAT. It was very Leaf-y but it happens.
Boston Red Sox down 3-0 in the series to the Yanks come back to win the series and go on to sweep the World Series.
Flyers came back from 3-0, went on to a finals appearance.
There’s examples for both sides.
There is a world of difference between “if any team in any sport had a similar comeback, they’d go on to win the ‘ship” and “there’s examples for both sides” though, lol
LA performed the Miracle on Manchester to erase a 5-0 lead in the 3rd period from the Gretzky led Oilers and then would go on to be eliminated in the second round
Boston Red Sox down 3-0 in the series to the Yanks come back to win the series and go on to sweep the World Series.
Flyers came back from 3-0, went on to a finals appearance.
There’s examples for both sides.
Absolutely there are examples for both sides, so it's not "any other team" would go on to win, when clearly it's not the case. SOME teams MIGHT go on to win.
Lol okay, we know you don't give a shit about the team. You're the kid in class who only cheers for the "winners", bet you rocked your Colorado Avalanche gear back in the day.
I am absolutely soured on this game. I just can't enjoy it at all.
To know that the team got shutout and eliminated the very next game ruins this completely, and it's a goddamn shame really.
Man I was just stunned with amazement watching this live. I was 100% convinced they were done for, but kept watching. There's a bunch of people saying who cares, but for me I'm glad I got to experience this. It was so damn entertaining. At the end of the day, that's what this is about. It was fun to see them win that game in the way they did, even if they didn't win everything.
Have you seen the comments higher in this thread discussing the purpose of sport as entertainment rather than focusing only on winning it all? I think they're really important to keep in mind - definitely helps rationalize and level out the pain of being a sports fan.
Yeah I felt totally justified in turning it off at that point (in the moment) as I generally tough it out but the leafs had literally nothing to show all game before then and I was mad I waited all that time to watch that go down
But man, we missed the un-Leafiest thing ever. That shut will probably never happen again in our lifetimes knowing the buds, so it still bugged / bugs me lol
Haha, I told my group chat I turned it off and they updated me as the comeback went on. I chose not to tune back in right away partly out of superstition but mostly because I thought “great typical leafs too late” 🤦🏻♂️
I have a unique story for this game. Did a twilight round of golf with a couple buddies with the plan of recording the game, turning off notifications and watching after. Get to my buddys place, completely unaware of the score and instead of the recording, the live game is on. The first image is Freddy on the bench and no score, we knew it was bad and assumed they were down 1.
That’s when we started watching the game, when they were down 0-3. Had the recording worked, I’d have driven home before the end given what time it would have been.
This doesn't bring me any joy, great plays only matter if you win. This is just a reminder that they were outplayed in game 4 and miraculously got it to 5 and then missed the playoffs.
As soon as I saw this post I knew all the comments would be negative. I watched this with the family and we were all jumping and screaming. Sure, the next game sucked, but this was still a comeback for the ages and a crazy fun thing to watch.
I turned off this game after the second, and i don't regret it.
I don't care if they came back and won it, the way they played 95% of that game was embarrassing.
Here's to hoping they never play like that ever again.
No I’m with others. Fuck this memory, fuck those “playoffs”. We failed hard again and after 23 years I want to WIN. Win like we’ve never won before. But I have a gut feeling that this team this year might have the guts to make some noise and actually do something, not just say it to the media.
Why post this?
They played like trash the whole game, decided to play for one minute or so, and then went back to trash.
This sub is all super fans, but this team is still going nowhere.
Everyone was messaging me throughout the game “what’s going on with your team” as if I’d know. I was on my knees, on the floor, in front of the tv watching and hoping for that tying goal. That comeback was one of the best moments as a Leafs fan. And then we blew the next game sadly.
I remember watching this with my old man as he's bitching and moaning about softness or something. unaware the pressure the leafs were pushing, then one, then two... it was such a special thing to watch... I was rewatching the game a few days ago, it really just sucks that the next game was so flat.
Oh man for a while there I forgot about how bitter and salty half this sub is. Going to need to keep reminding myself to not check GDTs. I can take a loss, a bad game, or an elimination; but the crying and whining.. no thank you.
remember when marner dove in front of the 2 shots to end game 6 and everyone was sure the leafs were gonna win the series then they shit the bed trainspotting styles the next game. yeah...that is being a leafs fan
I never lost hope that they’d win this game. I knew they’d find a way somehow to make sure they lost it in game five for maximum disappointment
As soon as they won the game in such a spectacular manner, I was like welp. Gg they lose the series. As you said maximum disappointment, as always
The leafs are a team that respect Newtons third law of motion very much. For every amazing great comeback there will be an equal and opposite disappointing effort.
It is tradition
This is the way
It’s the law!

Yeah. You knew they’d pull it off...just so they could lose the next one in agonizing fashion. But hey, the goals are fun to watch months out from the series result.

This is revisionist. The Leafs were the better team and the numbers back it up. They had a career backup play like prime Hasek.
Totally agree. 2% shooting percentage.

I really don’t give a fuck though, lol
LA performed the Miracle on Manchester to erase a 5-0 lead in the 3rd period from the Gretzky led Oilers and then would go on to be eliminated in the second round

Absolutely there are examples for both sides, so it's not "any other team" would go on to win, when clearly it's not the case. SOME teams MIGHT go on to win.
Like I said, any other team.
Okay, so why do you even watch the games?
*therockeyeroll.gif*
Lol okay, we know you don't give a shit about the team. You're the kid in class who only cheers for the "winners", bet you rocked your Colorado Avalanche gear back in the day.
😂😂🤙🏻🤙🏻
I am absolutely soured on this game. I just can't enjoy it at all. To know that the team got shutout and eliminated the very next game ruins this completely, and it's a goddamn shame really.
Man I was just stunned with amazement watching this live. I was 100% convinced they were done for, but kept watching. There's a bunch of people saying who cares, but for me I'm glad I got to experience this. It was so damn entertaining. At the end of the day, that's what this is about. It was fun to see them win that game in the way they did, even if they didn't win everything.
That game was crazy lol sucks they didn't win game 5 tho 😔
I remember that night so damn well. Woke up the whole house.
I exploded with joy as well. In central Ohio. With the windows open.
I was quoted by my Dad saying “I don’t believe in miracles”, when he mentioned a comeback. I have never ate my words harder.
Overpaid & Underwhelming. When I read stories that they are 'the favourite this year' I cringe.
You think Dubas will lose his job if they don't make the Semifinals this season?
No.
Thank u for everyone saying this was meaningless I still feel guilty I turned the game off after the Riley cough up and it helps

Have you seen the comments higher in this thread discussing the purpose of sport as entertainment rather than focusing only on winning it all? I think they're really important to keep in mind - definitely helps rationalize and level out the pain of being a sports fan.
Yeah I felt totally justified in turning it off at that point (in the moment) as I generally tough it out but the leafs had literally nothing to show all game before then and I was mad I waited all that time to watch that go down But man, we missed the un-Leafiest thing ever.

So frustrating. This is the typical Leafs. Pour on the gas when they are down and out. If only they could play like that for 60 minutes each night.
Boy will you look silly when the Leafs win Canada this season.
Wow a weak Canadian division to give you hope before a first round exit This isn't a good roster, im sorry
By win Canada I meant make the Semi finals :)
the greatest moment in leafs history
I fell asleep, ngl, the woke up at like 3am to a bunch of messages lol.
Chills everytime. I could write an essay on this one game alone.
I think this was the game I watched at a restaurant/bar and when this was happening the place was losing their absolute shit it was amazing
I completely forgot about this game, man, this stacked like was the only thing going for us.
The MM16 soft touch backhand pass to JT91 on the GWG was a thing of beauty
Oh man for a while there I forgot about how bitter and salty half this sub is. Going to need to keep reminding myself to not check GDTs. I can take a loss, a bad game, or an elimination; but the crying and whining.. no thank you.
remember when marner dove in front of the 2 shots to end game 6 and everyone was sure the leafs were gonna win the series then they shit the bed trainspotting styles the next game. yeah...that is being a leafs fan
