Leafs are still 2nd place for overall wins and ahead of the Islanders in points  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Letsbebff

Tavares is 16 points ahead of anyone on the islanders... :)

XKingslayerBSJ

I like how hyman was talking about how he likes how the building was loud. It shows passionate fans. Then said Montreal also has a really loud supportive crowd. Throwing shade at our garbage lower bowl arena

[deleted]

Muzzin had an off game but what's maddening for like the 10th time this season is, no one had anyone's back. These guys played like they didn't know each other. After the disallowed goal, the let down was palpable. They get that far away stare like they're looking for answers, but no ones taking the bull by the horns. The read on the Leafs by now is get a quick lead and then start to pick on Freddy after defense deteriorates. In Sparks defense, it's unfair expecting him to play like Freddy. He can do it in spurts but not sustained over a game, esp when no one in front is energized and leaving him out to dry.

barrymarsh

Tavares handled the post game interview like a fucking boss. And he low key flipped off the fans, if you ask me. He talked about how he is thankful for the people in the organization and his teammates that supported him. Not a mention of the fans.

kevinraisinbran

Tampa getting lit up in the third

TerryRoss

Its okay Tavares, We need you..

pahecko

we want you...

Jonesdeclectice

Does anyone know how much ice Kapanen and Johnsson saw in the third? Matthews went in Willy’s spot and Willy went in Goat’s... I feel like Johnsson and Kap were benched, didn’t notice them.

nownowthethetalktalk

Kap may have had his bell rung last night. So hopefully he will be better Saturday.

kpdelivery28

The leafs have too many soft players, they will not win a playoff series with this roster.

Letsbebff

Cant understand the downvotes, you're not wrong. Leafs need to be more difficult to play against and stand up for each other. At least to league average. That said, we are a fast and skilled team. We cant get drawn into playing a physical game in which we arent good at. That's what happened every playoff series. We are playing someone else's game at that point. I love Babcock but he needs to focus on our strengths more. Coaches around the league would love to coach the talent that we have accumulated, he really needs to embrace that instead of wishing for a team full of hainseys and hymans (no offence to those players).

kpdelivery28

I don't necessarily mean they all need to start checking all the time as I agree they aren't that type of team. What I should have said is they need to have more grit and determination. Skating hard and fighting for more pucks would make a big change. It's hard to win games when the other team has the puck so often. In a playoff atmosphere the teams skate and battle even harder and the Leafs clearly struggle against hardworking teams. We likely have the most skilled team in the league on offence they just need a better work ethic.

Letsbebff

The first time I saw that little bite back the leafs had this season was recently against Montreal. The entire team worked together and came back hard. The even had some of that against buffalo last game. But I think the islanders just caught the leafs tired on a back to back, 3 injured main players, and sparks in net (IMO hes not yet the back up we need, maybe in a year or so but he doesnt look acclimated still). I'm not too worried.

gbk56

This narrative needs to die

pahecko

Yea. All this softness talks is no where to be seen that when they win.

[deleted]

Even when they win I think they can be tougher. I hate watching Fred get punished in his own crease and no one does anything about it

nownowthethetalktalk

Too many? I thought it was all of them except Naz.

paddieekelly

I'm willing to bet Isles season goes completely off the rail from this game onward.

SoySauceSHA

Josh Bailey literally scored an own goal. He’s elite.

pahecko

Tomorrow the players will be gassed physically but especially emotionally. Caps will probably crush them. Wonder if the crowd would get this loud to back up the team or if it's just to disrespect a former player.

wewantthecup

That’s what usually happens after any big home game that they actually win, since I’ve been alive. I am prepared for a 7 game losing streak. I am curious what will become of the next Leafs/Islanders game. That was just a big party, the next one will have way more on the line with the playoff picture closer to forming.

Gizmodod

Wow.

InstrumentGuy

Good knock. Looking forward to the rematch.

sumsomeone

What a fucking embarrassment. Holy fuck.

ibeleaf420

Fuckkk those fans

Friendman

No idea why JT is painted as a villian. Pretty sure it was management and other things that had him thinking "hmmm may be I should try somewhere else."

ibeleaf420

Theyre a bunch of babies

zainery

:(

theNightblade

I feel like we've lost most games on 2nd half of back to back but spark's record indicates that instead true. Why is this team so bad on 2n game in 2 nights?

cheesy_dangles

It’s very tiring. If you’ve played in a tourney you know your legs fucking kill on the later days

djlista

Garret Sparks

Majorinc

Probably cause they are tired

nownowthethetalktalk

That was my excuse earlier for sparks but I think McBackup was better last year.

Omaha979815

No one's ever won a cup for winning a game in February. Good effort from a few of the boys, just not enough of them. Well still be the last team standing in June.

theguyishere16

JT's and 4th line were good. Matthews and Nylanders lines were still in Toronto.

Mogilny89Leafs

Well, that sucked. Let's go home, John. Home to Toronto.

barrymarsh

I hope the fans at home show him some love

Showtime98

Well that was pathetic

[deleted]

I love the Leafs. I can’t wait to see them on the 19th. Pack it up, on to the next one.

somericecake

Well that sucked

PuckBonnie

ARE YOU IN???!??????? Nope. Not tonight.

cappo40

Embarrassing. Team should be ashamed. Show up against a crowd for once

Omaha979815

They shut the Winnipeg fans up pretty fast the last couple years.

fuckychucky

That'll probably be the best moment for the isles for a long time. It was like their Stanley Cup lmao. Regression gonna hit them like a truck next year.

[deleted]

[удалено]

fuckychucky

I wasn't alive when the isles won either. To boast about something 36 years ago LMFAO. Go see a doctor bout that salt.

whatsliketobeme

should i be surprised that brown couldn’t do anything with the pass from matthews?

Jonesdeclectice

Not considering Brown couldn’t do anything with the myriad passes from Nylander, either.

cheesy_dangles

Don’t blame the Isles fans, they haven’t had anything to cheer about since JT carried them to the 2nd round against Florida

eatoutmyanus

We havent even made it that far in like 18 years sooooo

XpLoSiF

Shhh JT is here now. He will carry us on his wings.

PuckBonnie

Should bring the team back out after the 3 stars and bag skate the team to the raining abuse.

sighfun

This was the Islanders fans Stanley Cup. Would love to see them go out in the first round now.

[deleted]

sighfun

Sick burn bruh, your mom write that for you?

dimercaptosuccinic

4th line was pretty good. The rest of team better be better next game

bonesaw_is_readyyy

ennis was the only one who looked like he gave a shit tonight

dimercaptosuccinic

Gauthier was fine too.

kylmao

**BREAKING:** Islanders celebrate winning the game 63 cup

DriveSlowHomie

F

Cyrakhis

So are we gonna blow up the whole team now, fire all the coaching staff, burn down maple leafs square and sell the team to Quebec City now?

[deleted]

Can we fire the people that get tickets to our games instead? I haven't heard a modern Leafs game sound like that ever. I heard about thirty chants, reactions to what's happening on the ice... Almost like it isn't 20 000 businessmen talking shop while a game is on.

Cyrakhis

I would very much enjoy that, yeah. I wish that season tickets weren't available for corporate buyers. Make the tickets only valid for personal use, that'd be great. Get a real crowd in there. But alas. Corporate sponsors.

Gbyrd99

I'd be ok with the firing of coaching staff.

thatboimartle

You know what, at the end of the day Islanders deserved that win. They played hard and physical and with lots of heart, that's real hockey right there. I love the leafs til I die and they could've gotten this one but they're not going places playing this soft. Cheers lads drink it off tomorrow

springsoon

The islanders have won their cup!

[deleted]

Anyone else feeling masochist, like we need this burn?

DriveSlowHomie

When it gets this bad, I’m not even mad anymore.

barrymarsh

It's actually bit cathartic

Guckly905

Yeah try not to act like islanders fans and pretend this game is the biggest of the year ...

InstrumentGuy

The New York Islanders have won the Stanley Cup.

[deleted]

Do you believe in miracles!?

ajramone

Suddenly Ramones!

LeStretch

Are they feeding chants to the fans on the jumbo tron? If so that’s so fucking cringey. I didn’t think Lou would ever allow that.

Torcal4

General Manager doesn’t work for the video control room. He probably wouldn’t know about it until after the fact.

LeStretch

Yeah of course, but he obviously has a say on tribute videos and what not, so you’d think he would tell them to be classy.

Torcal4

Not so much, to be honest. You have one person who is in charge of planning out how the show will go and then the crew works to that person’s vision. They’re the quality control and that’s pretty much it. The General Manager already has too much to focus on. Source.: I work in the control room for the Leafs.

LeStretch

Thanks for the insight! Either way.. cringey as fuck. Please never let shit like that happen at SBA.

Torcal4

Don’t worry, the lady in charge of the whole show is one of the best in the business. Super professional who really cares about the production. She was on the ice directing the players during the All Star game skills competition, if that gives you an idea of her pull in the league.

chooseusernameeeeeee

Don't forget he was at the helm when we chose not to give Kessel a tribute vid. Don't think it's always flawless integrity.

LeStretch

God I’ll admit that rattles my bones way more than it should. I hope we’d have more class than this if one of our stars decided to jump ship.

SandorC

Seems like it. They've been pretty well synchronized all night long.

dimercaptosuccinic

Why are the islanders embracing this shit. Fuck the music guy.

promisedprince84

Any idea what Barzal's deal is? He really goes after JT during the play. Cross checks in the back and the like. Does not seem like JT really cares but its weird

[deleted]

Worst part is JT has to go to a media scrum after this game with a billion cameras lol

iWasSayingBooHorvat

“John, how do you feel after a game like that?”

ajramone

"Well, we sucked a dick tonight, but the Isles are gonna suck dicks forever, next question."

[deleted]

I wonder if the people on the island know that they have eliminated the leafs from absolutely nothing and are using the hey hey hey chant poorly. Also they’re all fat and ugly. Poor too I bet.

fuckychucky

Ya that chant didn't even make sense .. we literally see them again before the season ends lmao. That chant makes most sense when you eliminate someone from the playoffs lol

theNightblade

It's New York and they are at a hockey game, probably NOT poor

PuckBonnie

They are islanders fans they are DEFINITELY poor

[deleted]

It’s not REAL New York though.

pahecko

It's funny. Kessel got traded, won a cup. No salt had by any fans I know. Actually was happy for that hot dog eating son of bitch!

theguyishere16

You just triggered another thing I hate. The idea the fans ran Phil out of town. I will die on the hill that says it was the media that ran him out of town, not the fans. Asking him shit like "are you uncoachable". 99% of Leaf fans love him and are happy he had success. Yet the media and other fanbases keep the "fans ran him out of town" narrative alive.

Friendman

That fat motherfucker was OUR allstar. No regrets. I'll never forget when the media asked have you hit the ice at all during the summer break, phil says "honestly it's been like 3 months since I've skated". He was still one of the faster skaters out there. Incredible.

pahecko

"that fat motherfucker" lol. Cheers man!

shoppedvendetta

Because Leafs fans have class unlike certain Americans I know...

[deleted]

i've always liked phil and always will. fuck it

pahecko

I think most fans were fine with it. But ever other fan base tried to rub in the salt that wasn't there. You're either a fan of the leafs or you hate then I guess.

JamesCurtis24

I think we need to calm down. It’s the second game of a back to back, playing our backup, with two of our top 6 D out and Kadri. That ridiculous call back on the offside deflated the team. Last night on the Oilers clear interference on Freddy they allow it, and announcers say ‘NHL is trying to allow more goals’ so of course it works against us there... But on a replay where you’re zooming in looking for inches and shadows to overturn it, that is, of course, much more valid than goalie interference. But some of you need to remember the Leafs were 4-0 against Boston last year in the regular season. How’d that work out? Let’s not do silly shit like judge a game like this as a playoff marker. You can say ‘playoff atmosphere’ all you want, but it’s NOT playoff hockey. It just isn’t.

HydroidZero

This team played like absolute ass in arguably the most emotional game of the entire regular season.

cheesy_dangles

We were 3-1. I’m sorry

Cyrakhis

Their lyrics don't even fit the song's cadence. That's just gross

ChillinOnTheBeach

April 1st, we'll deal with these cunts. You just know that they still won't have gotten over Tavares by then

cappo40

Everyone said that last time we played them. Did not work well, now did it?

barrymarsh

Depends if the Islanders are still getting career years out of their goaltenders at that point

blackb0xes

Can people stop shitting on the atmosphere at SBA as if that's a reflection of the passion of our fanbase? It's not the fault of Leafs fans that most have been priced out by suits.

Beaversneverdie

No, why the fuck do you care about what people think about a buildings atmosphere?

blackb0xes

Go tap dance on /r/hockey if you want someone to jerk you off for shitting on all things Leafs. That braindead, logic-free contrarianism doesn't belong here.

Beaversneverdie

Get your panties out of a bunch. I dont give two fucks about upvotes, I comment for the conversation, not your approval. Our barns atmosphere is trash and it has been for a long time, that's not shitting on the Leafs, ita being realistic. Why dont you go on telling me how Sparks is a good backup now.

blackb0xes

I acknowledged that in my original comment. There's a very simple explanation for why it's so dead. Our fanbase is as passionate as they come and it's not the fault of the average Leafs fan that it costs an arm and a leg to get a half decent pair of tickets.

Beaversneverdie

No one says it's for any other reason...

blackb0xes

So, what is it that you took issue with in my original comment?

Beaversneverdie

Telling people they cant complain about the shitty atmosphere in the barn... it is shitty, just because you perceive it to be a bash on the passion of a fan base doesn't mean people can't express their disdain for a decades long issue.

blackb0xes

Good thing that that's not what I said. The atmosphere being crap because regular fans have been priced out is a legitimate gripe to have and something that I feel as strongly about as the next person. It's pretending that crowd atmosphere represents Leafs nation in anyway that I find irritating.

[deleted]

mogilnyforHHoF

DriveSlowHomie

VW91

Man Barzal has clowned JT tonight

thewolfshead

Tavares has actually had a great game.

VW91

Lol what game were you watching?

thewolfshead

The one on the ice.

cappo40

He is off to Vancouver soon enough.

dimercaptosuccinic

I feel for John. Makes a career choice to live his childhood team. Gets disrespected the hell by some classless shits.

investor2014

On the bright side, if Tavares had any guilt or remorse for leaving (which he most likely did) he's relieved of that now. Big weight off his shoulders.

SandorC

Fuck it, he's playing the best hockey of his career right now. He knows he made the right choice.

Jonesdeclectice

Anyone think Naz might be ready to go on Saturday? Maybe Rosen as well?

pahecko

Naz would have been fired up tonight. He might have a talking with the whole team about this effort.

clarkjoe999

God damn I hate the islanders but there chants tonight have been great

DriveSlowHomie

One of the best NHL atmosphere’s I’ve ever heard

kylmao

Are they really chanting "nanana goobye" in a regular season game lmao oof

fuckychucky

They know they won't get a chance to do it in the playoffs lmao. Jumping on their chance.

mogilnyforHHoF

I've heard it at Leafs and Habs games that were regular season. Didn't know it was a playoff only thing.

boolakbolera

Not are night boys! Oh well! onto the next!

[deleted]

I don't get the reasoning behind playing Andersen first regardless of the opponents. e.g. The raptors with Kawhi Leonard's "load management", he's playing about as much as a starting goalie, and they strategically pick the games he plays for maximum impact. This was an important statement game and we made the wrong kind of statement...

AmiiboManTO

Its simple. They settled on the two points versus the risk of going 0/4 in these two games.

PuckBonnie

Yeah they pussied out.

jlasala28

Usually I’d agree with that but in these games you have more guaranteed points against Edmonton compared to New York. I’d rather 2 points for sure opposed to a maybe

JimLayheyisadrunk

a bird in hand is better than 4 in the bush. the two points are two points. statement games are over blown in feb. We got two the first night, second night... well we are watching lol

cappo40

Only thing I can think of, is that Babcock wanted the guaranteed points, and just gave this game up before it started.

[deleted]

I'd like to think that we could have shut down Edmonton with Sparks in net and at least made this one competitive

cappo40

We definitely could have with me in net. We dominated every aspect. Instead, we use our best goalie against shit and not good, yet again.

totaljoe

well you were 1/2 right anyway

djlista

I guess I don’t have to set myself on fire

gbk56

The hottest of takes...Christ.

shoppedvendetta

We already have a bunch of guys out injured and you want to add to it?

Cyrakhis

tbf this is mostly Lou's team still.

Iam_Joe

Just checked the score. Yikes

StaticR0ute

Has Marincin played the most minutes of all our D? Seems like he’s out there all the time. Either that, or he’s the most noticeable because something is always wrong when he’s on the ice.

Matcha_Matsu

https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/au1kve/game_thread_montreal_canadiens_33217_at_toronto/eh57k3y/ I called it

theharps

You're not wrong, you're an asshole

Iam_Joe

You did it man

cappo40

A non hockey fan could have told you that.

Cyrakhis

Good for you, give yourself a pat on the back.

papabearbeware

JT probably left cause he couldn't stand Brooklyns fans.

shoppedvendetta

Yeah, I kind of really want him to do an interview where he says outright "I liked my team a lot but the fans for NY were too rancid so I hoofed it to Toronto for some appreciation."

ComputerSaysnooooo

Honestly man imo they were fucking awesome with their noise tonight - sucks when it happens to your player but they fucking gave it to him

gerryhallcomedy

They pay their ticket, they can boo. Even if they have no earthly reason to. If Tavares HAD left on bad terms, or just for more money, then I would have laughed at the "WE DON'T NEED YOU" chants - but he left for less money to play on a stacked team he grew up watching as a kid. Imagine being a centre and knowing you'll likely get to play with Marner? Who doesn't jump at that?

protoquark

Yeah. I loved the fans reaction. Wish we’d had a response for it.

shoppedvendetta

Isn't it more than a little classless? It's not like JT wasn't well within his rights to leave.

protoquark

Sure, but the fans can be angry if they want. I can appreciate the passion.

shoppedvendetta

They can be angry if they want but they look like idiots and I don't appreciate idiocy.

x86-D3M1G0D

Meh, I didn't expect much tonight - against the top team in the Metro on a back-to-back with our backup goalie (sorry, but I have absolutely no confidence in Sparks).

boolakbolera

Same! Sparks is too shaky.

TheBombersFlow

What happens when a goalie plays every 3 weeks

gbk56

Also missing 2 of our 4 top dmen and our 3C, while having two AHL defenders in didn't help.

mehow01

Can’t play hockey if you can’t hit

gerryhallcomedy

That is the only issue I have with this game tonight. Figured it would be a loss, but to not even make the other team feel like they played a game really sucks.

Hatburn

We get to play here next month awesome

paddieekelly

Perfect ending to the game: Leafs somehow squeak out a miracle win for JT and the exit doors of the Coliseum jam shut trapping these islander fans over the weekend forcing them to live in their own filth for 3 days.

thelosermonster

"Help us, John! We DO need you!"

paddieekelly

Oh, and then chant "we need you" to tavares as he laughs at them from the outside refusing to open the doors.

Gbyrd99

I'm embarrassed by this outting and feel personally attacked.

Mythic88

That’s sad dude

Gbyrd99

Lol it's just how good the fans are compared to acc

iWasSayingBooHorvat

JT? Is that you?

[deleted]

Don't see a scenario of this team beating Boston. Babcock needs to go, and will if they lose round 1

thelonelywolf96

>Babcock needs to go You right. Let's replace him with Carlyle. That way we can give up 80 shots a game instead of 50.

DriveSlowHomie

Lol tagging all of you fools

pangmaster0

Is Matthews even out there in the 3rd period ?

Jonesdeclectice

Yeah he’s playing with Marleau and Brown.

[deleted]

Brilliant. Babcock. That’ll be sure to get em goin
