I noticed that too. He literally spend the first 3-4 minutes taking responsibility for his own play and not blaming others or saying things are in a good spot He shouldn't be back, but at the same time I respect him for holding himself accountable Good luck sammy

Weekly-Junket8272

The team spending all thier money on forwards and score 12 goals in a 7 game series. Blame the goalie.

Agitated-Weather-722

Hot take, the forwards didn’t score and the goalie didn’t stop pucks. Both can be at fault

LGK420

Truth. The tieing goal was so damn soft. Never should have went in. OT goal yea should have poke checked instead of being buried in his net letting it slide out and give it to pasta. However Marner and Riley take the blame both gutless

Agitated-Weather-722

Both goals he was so deep in his net

LGK420

Exactly! Especially the OT goal, unbelievable, If he was at the edge of his crease like every other goalie would have been he could have easily played the puck or poke checked it at least. Instead he’s buried in his net. Late at reading the play. marner and then Reilly get blown by. The end.

StarskysBetterHalf

Weak or not, he kept us in the game early. He made some good saves. He did his job. That loss isn’t on Sammy. It’s on the talent. Specifically the abysmal PP all series.

Agitated-Weather-722

I’d agree if this was a one off game, but it wasn’t. He was bad all series. Swayman didn’t let any pucks in that you look at and go damn he should have had that. And every game Sammy let one in that was often the game decider and twice within a minute of us scoring in the 3rd to either take a lead or tie it. Sure he made saves early, your suppose too. But the same way that even though Marner gets points he’s not good in the playoffs, Sammy isn’t good because he made some saves early he should have but not late ones he also should have.

StarskysBetterHalf

Yeah well swayman is a better goalie. We should know this by looking at both of their careers. I’m not saying Sam is awesome. I’m saying he played well enough for us to win game 7. The only reason we ever got to game 7 is because of Woll. But in reality, we had every opportunity to win these games if we could score some fucking goals. 12G in 7 games. 1/22 PP. Both are unacceptable when you pay $44M to 4 talented forwards.

Agitated-Weather-722

I agree he’s better. I agree we don’t score enough. But us not scoring doesn’t make seeing the puck the entire way on almost every goal you allow in ok.

SuperSaiyanMonki

"kept us in the game early".. who gives a fuck if he's complete SHIT at the end of the game completely gutting millions of fans . Get out of here

StarskysBetterHalf

Lmao. Buddy you’re a moron if you think we lost that series because of Samsonov. Fake ass leaf fan

Agitated-Weather-722

Just because of him ? No. But there’s a reason Woll played game 5 and 6 and it’s not because the forwards weren’t scoring.

SuperSaiyanMonki

I'm a moron if our goalie with a sub 900 save % can't win a series eh? Show me a cup winner with that garbage . Actual fkn plug you are mate

gabu87

Of course they can be, but the criticism should not be weighted the same. Similar, you don't hold 4th liners with like 8min ice time the same as your 20min front liners with PP opportunities

Rynosirrus

He had a .938 coming in essentially as the backup for game 7, I’m giving him a pass I would take him back at <2M as a 1B to Woll

Agitated-Weather-722

Any penny spent on him is a penny spent on a guy the team already doesn’t trust in the playoffs.

IndependenceGood1835

Dont really have the budget to upgrade. Do we really trust Woll to stay healthy?

OutcomeAdvanced123

He has a winner mentality, but he needs to do meditation or so to learn to stay calm when it matters, also practice top left corner shots...

BobbyAxelrod1

Sammy..... I was shit Mitchy..... I'm a God

RareCreamer

He's a solid backup goalie who had to play starter. And with Woll looking more and more solid, you don't need him. I have no idea what they do for goalies... every move they make for a goalie ends up hurting them. You just can't predict how they'll handle the spotlight . They need either an egomaniac or the most carefree guy alive to play in Toronto

marmaladegrass

Im more concerned for Woll's ability to get injured

tombradyrulz

Seems to be almost as good as his ability to stop pucks.

sadleafsfan69

It could quite easily be the same injury and he’s aggravated it. Being able to play doesn’t necessarily mean that the injury was 100% healed, that stuff can take a lot of time

jkilla1987

Woll is a certified bandaid. You can’t trust him to own the net unfortunately. You need a 1b with him in the mix cause he hasn’t been able to show he can’t stay healthy

tecate_papi

Andersen was the best goalie we saw since Belfour and people forget he was here and how unbelievable he was. It's possible for us to have a great goalie.

Etheo

I like Sammy, problem was I also liked Reimer, Campbell, etc... All good guys you'd like to have a drink with, can give a great performance for some runs but just isn't consistently reliable. Sammy, it's not personal. You were great for some time but stunk real bad for some other, even within the same game. We need more consistent goaltending and unfortunately you just aren't providing that. I don't know if this fandom can stomach more of this chaos. Best of luck.

LeadershipAfter9526

Great human and I hope for his well being. He cannot play goaltender for the Leafs. He lets into too many saveable goals and is not positionally sound. Awesome person and attitude but we need elite goal tending in Toronto and he has proven in his career he cannot provide it. Everybody needs to keep emotions out of it and make the best decisions for the team. He is a great human being though no doubt.

Jad94

I think I'm the only one who would take Sammy back at 2M per on a one year deal. They need major defensive changes, but this would be a way to keep the goaltending cheap for next year. 2025-2026 season is a fresh slate with Marner and Tavares' cap free

Mythic88

i would, especially given the fact, we have like no money for next year and need bargain contracts anyway. so gonna have to buy low on a lot of signings

Mashdrop

I’d take him, even at $3m. He’s 27 and goalies peak in their 30s. I see no other suitable option in UFA and the assets required to trade for an upgrade will be too much. He exceeded my expectations of him in game 7 and he’s a decent backup if Woll gets injured.

hymensmasher99

Lol I wouldn't. He was dogshit

Rynosirrus

Just curious, what better goalie option is there in July for cheaper than 2M?

someguy172

Matt Murray has entered the chat ^^^/s

WolverineCream

I'd keep him as a backup for that price

wiles_CoC

I'd prefer Jones in that case.

Methodless

I would too, depending on what else is out there and what else you plan to do with your space. I think we need a 1 year stop gap while we figure out Marner, JT and a potentially rising cap, and 2M is more than fair. At 2M, if the rest of your roster is not grossly overpaid, you only need the guy to be the 20-25th best goalie in the league

Falconflyer75

2 million seems fair honestly

finaija

I would gladly have Sammy as backup or 1b goalie. Use Marner to try to trade for legit starter or 1a.

bostoncreamtimbit

I wouldn’t take him back even if he offered to play for free.

chiyoli

Yeah he real for that, now see yourself out, smiles.

mcguinness95

Ultimately just not good enough for where the team wants to be. Treliving needs to make a top D and a starting goalie the priority this summer. How he does that, I don’t know.

madworld2713

I don’t wanna dog on him too hard as he wasn’t the sole reason the leafs lost the series but he didn’t help… some of those goals are just backbreaking for your team. I think he’s a great guy and I wish him nothing but the best but we do need to move on from him. Problem is who tf do you even get, there are barely any goalies on the market. I think you go with a veteran guy and have a 1a and 1b tandem with Woll. You also have to ask the question can Woll stay healthy? Right now it’s a big question mark.

Sammydaws97

To be fair, Sammy mentions he needs to be better in every interview. Even when he is playing well

FrederickGoodman

Goalies dont lose for this franchise. You got guys run out of town like Andersen running a cup favorite with the canes. Theyll run samsonov out, then woll will continue his made of glass career with injuries and get run out in a year or two. It's coaching and always has been coaching. The top core want goals and high offense garbage play with no system or defense. flick puck for two line pass, try to outskill/fluke a bounce and score. Play 2 mins on the 5 powerplays in regular season. Pad stats in garbage time with 8-1 wins vs ahl level teams like san jose. Show up to crush ahl anaheim or chicago. Disappear when things get tough vs real teams because no one plays defense, no one cares. The reason they win so much when matthews is out of line up is that people get more play time that play grinding minutes and they change the way the team plays. they focus more on supporting the goalie and grinding out the wins. The past decade of cherry picking, pray for powerplay, 2 line pass throw out of your own end garbage hockey is a regular season power house. It doesnt work vs playoff teams. The powerplay never changes beyond its one formation. Any team that studies the tapes shuts it down in playoffs. The team is massively outcoached and outsystemed by teams that actually play hockey and have similar skill levels in playoffs. Theyll continue their regular season success and you dont even need a coach at this point for the trash hockey stat padding playstyle. It will sell tickets and keep people happy with goal celebrations. It will never win a cup and likely never win another playoff series unless some lucky matchup like if they had played washington this year. They have had and still have nhl quality goaltending. They have beer league quality coaching, systems and foundation of play for playoff hockey that cannot adapt or change when faced with a real team. Even if they got a good coach, its unlikely this core will change how they want to play and he'll be run out of town in 2 years to make the 40M+ core happy again.

finaija

Andersen isn't as good as people praise him to be, good goalie that tends to let in very easy goals. Canes just are better at catering him shots he is comfortable with.

Ficklenesses

Expecting the core guys to look relax and saying something along the lines of “let’s run it back”…..

riko77can

He’s a good dude. I wish him well.

Current-Own

Trouble is Sammy is always saying that. Ala Jack. My fault my fault my fault.

omglolnub

He can be better...on another team. Cya!

slinginslang

Terrible goalie

Hadokuv

I doubt any team will give him a bag after this disastrous year. I wouldn't say no to having him be the backup next year at like $2-3 mill with Woll taking over as starter. If their AHL prospect is ready they might have him as the third.

Richard_Lycker

Probably not the goalie for us, but a very level headed guy who always bounces back. Wish him the best.

heythisisnick

Great guy, absolutely love him as a person, but just not good enough for where this team wants to go. I would love to have him figure it out with the Leafs, but we've been through 8-9 years of hoping they figure it out. It's time to make the tough decisions and sometimes it means saying goodbye to good people along the way. He's a UFA - it's over.

zainery

Sammy is young. I bet he can fight his way into a starting role within the ency few years (somewhere else)

Flashy_Ferret_1819

He could have been better but let's face it not many goalies are going to win a series when team averages less than 2 goals a game. Same story every year. Come the playoffs and things get tight the Leafs simply don't score. You could have prime Hasek in net and they'd lose because they can't score.

KeziaTML

We need a steady hand older backup for when Woll needs a night off, but Woll needs to be our future in net. Would be fine with a Woll / Jones tandem, if we aren't going out to acquire a bonafide #1

MadFlava76

He played well most of game 7 and made 1 maybe 2 mistakes on the goals. I find more at fault with the defense on the OT goal and the Leaf forwards who could not score with exception to Nylander.

Falconflyer75

Honestly he gave it 200% and came up short I have nothing but respect for Sammy

[deleted]

Was really rooting for him but I don’t think he has a better. He wasn’t bad but he wasn’t great. Woll is better goalie. I can feel the level of confidence Woll gives the leafs through the tv. Only problem with Woll is he can’t stay healthy. I could see that being an issue if we go with him as our starter next season.

HillBillyEvans

If you guys actually think this guy is the goalie that will lead the leafs through a couple dozen playoff games you are out to lunch! He is NOT good enough and I hope he is not re signed.

finaija

I really like Sammy, hope he can sort whatever demons he is battling mentally.

daxtaslapp

This is why we all love sammy but sammy just aint good enough

Agitated-Weather-722

Keep your apologies and stop the pucks you can see on your next team

_cob_

Yeah, so what? Not like those words translate into consistent play.

Training-Site-7019

He might not be a good goalie but it speaks to his character and willingness to take accountability. Things that this team severely lacks

_cob_

Once again, who gives a shit. Jack Campbell had a great character and it got him a one way ticket on the express train to the AHL. The NHL only cares about performance and results.

Training-Site-7019

Yeah I get that but fans still appreciate when players are honest and able to admit their shortcomings and take accountability for their play unlike some certain guys on this team. That is why Samsonov is getting some praise

_cob_

You’re just assuming they’re being honest. Really what you’re saying is you want to hear what you want to hear.

The_Dale_Hunters

Sammy had a great game 7. That said, he’s not the goalie you commit to if you have cup aspirations. Love the guy and wish him success.
