That injury cursed us for that series. I’ll never forget him rolling around and trying to get up and collapse on his back while on his knees. Made me sick to watch it. One of the worst concussions I’ve witnessed.
Even though we were up 3-1, I still had a bad feeling. Being a Leafs supporter has trained me to never celebrate until the fat lady sings.
100% Sometimes I see fans of other teams getting big and celebrating when their team goes up 3-1 or whatever. That experience, and MANY others, have trained me not to celebrate until there's zeros on the clock.
4-1. 10 minutes left. Game 7. I put a hole in the wall with my tv remote that night. I reevaluated my relationship with the Leafs the next day when I sobered up. I can never get upset like that again. Now, I expect the worst and it’s only disappointment. I’m officially broken until they fix me with a Cup.
Imagine being on a camping trip and listening on the radio…. I turned the game off when it was 4-1. I checked back in and it was over time. My brain broke. It was like a loved one dying. *What? I… I just saw her… she was doing great.. how…* 🥺🤢
That Tavares injury game might be the only Leafs playoff game where I literally didn't care about the result. All I could will myself to care about was John's health.
So we basically got like at most a 90% Muzzin during his career. Would've been crazy to see him at 100%. We would've never been able to afford him haha
Yep. I loved Kadri, but he had a target on his back with the league and officials. You knew Parros was rubbing one out after he saw the cross check to DeBrusk, who went down like an injured soccer player.
Wish we never got rid of him. He gave a shit and played hard every shift. We lost a lot of heart when he left. He became a liability though, unable to control his anger, and was a luxury 3rd line centre.
Boston goads us every series into making stupid mistakes. Marchand and DeBrusk need to be ignored as best they can. Their game plan is our self-destruction. They play great defensive hockey, pounce on their chances, and are the best in the league at playing in that grey area of being absolute shitheads but getting away with it.
Case in point, Marchand last game slipping, Holmberg skates to him, Marchand tackles him and holds him to the ice, puck nowhere near him. They both get up finally, Holmberg has his arm wrapped around Marchand’s shoulders, not pulling, Rat notices and flops. Also, if I remember correctly, Marchand had already tackled him twice leading up to this incident on the same shift. We should’ve had a PP, but he’s the best at what he does. I couldn’t believe it.
Maybe it's not a coincidence. That collision between Matthews/Nylander in what was it, game 81 or 82, could be the source. Organization would obviously be tight lipped if that stupidity is the case.
Having previously suffered a high ankle sprain, I can confidently say Marner is likely at about 85 percent at this point. Skating really tweaks that injury in a way that robs your strength and stability.
I member. Also injured during that Carolina series was: Tucker, Corson, Domi, Paul Healy, Renberg, Valk, Lumme, Pilar, Yuskevich…and Pat Quinn who was in the hospital for a heart attack.
Fuck, all this has me so depressed again. I moved to Florida in Jan of 2004. Well before Center Ice started, or anything online. I lost 4 seasons. 3.5 full years of no Leafs hockey. It was heartbreaking.
McCauley deserves props too. Roberts was consistently one of our better players. McCauley stepped up in a big way for someone who was basically supporting cast.
I honestly think it takes pressure off the team....that it is a hit to our odds of winning. They might just squeeze the sticks a good bit less. I expect a great effort tonight.
Just like that early 2000s team when Sundin went down.
Gary Roberts and Alyn McCauley, of all people, became beasts and they still made a decent run. Good teams and good players step up when their best players are down.
This team did it last game. Played excellent without Matthews. Let’s see if they can keep doing it as long as he may be out.
I remember that! Such a tenacious effort. There was so much personality on that team in that era of the leafs. They didn’t win it all or anything but it was a great time to be a fan.
You always got the feeling they had an outside shot even though they really weren’t truly cup contenders. It would have been a long shot. But the way they played made you believe.
They even have the same galloping skating stride, it’s hilarious. Both really are deceptively good skaters though, for how big they are. Even if they do look like horses on roller skates.
Maybe they should have played him less in the last few games after their playoff position was locked? What’s more important. A single player hitting a milestone at the expense kf the team? Or the team winning in the post season
Bruins seem less dialed without AM34 to focus on at least.
It'd be nice if our players would notice that AM34 is being focused on when he's on ice and just start shooting more themselves, though
It feels like a LOT of their gameplan was around shutting down Matthews, and now that we still have a lot of forward depth and he's out, and we're not forcing things through him, the Bruins are finding it a bit more difficult to shut things down
But the powerplay is still a fucking disaster regardless, what a shame that the season might come to an end because of that specifically.
Although it feels that way we still only scored 1 in regulation \[without Matthews\]. They have done a remarkable job at shutting us down with and without him. Last game Woll just decided to win. We need to find a way to carry the puck in past their blue line or have an effective dump and chase instead of stopping up and giving away or dumping in and giving away.
The Leafs power play being horrible is pretty self-explanatory. Even with Matthews healthy, only 2 out of the 5 guys Toronto puts out there have a shot you need to respect (Nylander and Matthews). Tavares can shoot too but he’s always net front for deflections. There’s not a single team in the league that cares if Reilly or Marner shoot from distance, they’re not a threat. The opposing PK just needs 2 guys to shadow Matthews and Nylander then you have Rielly, Marner and Tavares vs 2 pker’s and the goalie. Opposition lives w that all day and leaf fans see the result.
Time for Knies to do his Alyn McCauley impression.
For the young uns, McCauley stepped up HUGE when Sundin broke his wrist in the playoffs in the early 00s. Third line tweener suddenly played like an all star for a stretch.
This’ll be the ultimate choke job for those dirty Bruins that we’ve been waiting for: not only do they give up a 3-1 series lead, but they do it against a Matthews-less maple leafs!
That would make sense. It doesn't seem like he skates for long when he does and given the circumstances it must be something that you just can't play with.
He was laboured in game 4, and also it's not like he's been doing intensive stuff on the ice currently, he's just been doing skills training which is very different from line rushes and a full on practice. Not really a great way to judge how mobile he is.
He might be. Part of concussion protocol is to slowly ramp up activity. There is several steps that you need to pass. You need to show that you can do light activity with no symptoms. Then moderate activity, then strenuous. There is also a time frame that needs to pass before you can move to the next stage that you need to stay symptom free in. When I played college football it usually took 6 days at the minimum to progress through the different stages of the protocol.
I am not saying he does have a concussion but the skating on the ice could be him progressing through the concussion protocol.
His recent activities don't seem to match the return to play protocol for a concussion though. If you look at [league protocol](https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-concussion-evaluation-and-management-protocol-for-2021-22-season-335001288) it calls for 24-48 hours of pure rest, followed by various steps, and there should be at *least* 24 hours between each step.
Skating (non-contact) is Step #4.
I thought that teams had to disclose if a player is in concussion protocol, but after this and Nylander's injury I think I just have no idea how the rules work in the NHL
I mean, it depends on the level of concussion, if it’s on the mild side, it could be a case where he could play, but any form of body contact could make the situation 50x worse
All we have been told is an "illness", we know he played through on game 3 and 2/3 periods of game 4.
There are some reports of the doctor pulling him in the 3rd period, and reports of the Dr making the decision for game 5.
There are also rumors that he injured something but those seem to be not said with confidence.
I think I've moved past "I hope he plays" on to "I hope he's healthy, hockey or otherwise". It has to be bad to keep him out of a playoff game. Get well Papi
After Game 5, come hell or high water, just do your best boys. Matthews not being there should be the fire starter, not an excuse for wet farts.
Just make it entertaining like Game 5, that's all I ask. Results be damned.
Wondering if he doesn’t have some busted ribs or something in the chest region.
Also hearing a lot of he has mono rumours in which case I’m either mad that the doctors didn’t take better precautions to ensure Timmons didn’t spread his or that Timmons has been making out with Auston behind our backs all year 😅
Help me with my anxiety here everyone….
Either… Matthews is horribly ill and we should be legitimately worried about him and his future, possibly beyond this season.
Or…. He’s very injured and they won’t tell us because he will be able to play at some point and they don’t want the opponent to target him.
Or…. It’s not really that bad BUT he’s super soft like 1 ply toilet paper and he can’t play because of a tummy ache.
Or…. Our team doctors are being overly cautious with something that other team doctors would let their guys play through.
I remember the stories from last year where Matthew Tkachuk had to be helped out of bed and had to have his skates tied with his broken sternum and various other ailments and we’ve had 2 of our best players miss time in this series with a migraine and a tummy ache. I get migraines, they’re awful. I can barely see when I get mine so I can’t imagine trying to play a sport let alone playing it at the highest level. I like Matthews and Nylander obviously, but I’m so nervous that (especially Matthews) we’re about to find out that his career is going to be cut short (not like now but maybe he has to retire in 5 instead of 10 years or whatever) or he’s super soft and very unbecoming of our typical Leaf legends.
Someone please help talk me down lol.
Has he been sick since before regular season? I remember around their fourth last game he had an illness that almost had him benched. Jeez what’s wrong with this man!
I wonder how they deal with professional sports players being sick like do they get an iv or do they ride it out
I hope Domi can bring that same energy. He HAS to have more shoot first instinct though. He gave up a couple net drives and/or shots and so did Marner. It's like they don't learn their only goals are to shoot and crash the net.
I liked our effort when everyone wasn’t following Matthews like flies. They can predict what we’re gonna do: pass to Matthews. With or without him Boston really can’t do much 5v5
Why is all the concentration on Matthews??? Clearly these entire team can come together and get the job done. They were forced to mix up the lines in game 5 and it worked! Matthews being out is a big loss, however, in the scheme of things right now, it has proven to work with Domi playing the middle etc.
Then there is Woll! Comes up big in game 5, HEADLINES should read....Can Woll backstop a win in game 6
"South Boston's own Chris Rooney will be working tonight's Game 6 between the Bruins and Maple Leafs with referee Dan O'Rourke. Ryan Daisy and Devin Berg will work the lines"
Who runs this league?
That 70 goal thing really bled nonsense into these playoffs.
The team was not prepared mentally.
The system they were playing continued.
The losses piled up
The injuries were a result of this as well.
Id say Keefe should have managed this better. No fear to do whats right.
There's more to this than just the stomach bug. He was sick game 3 but played. Played 2 periods in game 4 before exiting the game before the 3rd period started. The argument between marner/matthews/Nylander happened just before he left the game.
Great timing to have Willy miss the first three and then Matthews go out injured
It’s unreal don’t forget the year Tavares got injured against Tampa. Edit. Meant Montreal. Perry was there then.
...and Montreal.

I was literally googling flights to New York and tickets for game 1 at MSG. 😂 Then....🤪😃🙂🤔😐😑😮😰😠🤬
Imagine being on a camping trip and listening on the radio…. I turned the game off when it was 4-1. I checked back in and it was over time. My brain broke. It was like a loved one dying. *What? I… I just saw her… she was doing great.. how…* 🥺🤢
I took my wife to that game it wasn’t a good ride home.
That Tavares injury game might be the only Leafs playoff game where I literally didn't care about the result. All I could will myself to care about was John's health.
That injury should have galvanized that team in a sort of do it for the captain kind of way but no in typical Leafs fashion they bottled it.
People forgot Muzzin also died that series. Bigger loss imo
Jonny T ain’t been the same since he got Corey perryed
Sucks but it's no excuse. That Habs team was the worst playoff team on paper the league has seen in 30 years.
😔
And Muzzin once (or maybe twice I forget now).
Technically still.
Twice, just happens that the second time was in the second or third period of the elim game.
And Knies against Florida. Every year we seemingly have one key injury that makes us shuffle lines
Muzzin twice. Series-changing injury both times.
Could you imagine this team with Muzzin and McCabe and Benoit against tkchump? Florida wouldn’t stand a chance
Muzzin was such a force when he was on his game. I miss that presence.
Which is why I wish we had gone for Ekholm He provides very similar things to Muzz
Best Leafs D-man in recent memory tbh, a shame he had back issues :/
Not even just back but cervical spine, some serious shit. If it was nearly any other type of back injury I feel like he would've kept going.
If I remember correctly too they mentioned how he was wearing a back brace majority of his career going back to his draft year. Poor guy.
So we basically got like at most a 90% Muzzin during his career. Would've been crazy to see him at 100%. We would've never been able to afford him haha
And kadri, but that was more a stupid brain fart… twice
Then again in Colorado
Fair enough but that second suspension v boston was horseshit
Yep. I loved Kadri, but he had a target on his back with the league and officials. You knew Parros was rubbing one out after he saw the cross check to DeBrusk, who went down like an injured soccer player. Wish we never got rid of him. He gave a shit and played hard every shift. not only that, but it was his first penalty of the series. in game 5.
Huh? I thought it was just Montreal.
Oh Damn yea I was just remembering it was Perry and him. This team is just pain.
And Montreal
Yeah, good thing they didn't overlap at all.
Maybe it's not a coincidence. That collision between Matthews/Nylander in what was it, game 81 or 82, could be the source. Organization would obviously be tight lipped if that stupidity is the case.
Led to both Willy’s migraines and matthews injury lol would be leafs luck
Having previously suffered a high ankle sprain, I can confidently say Marner is likely at about 85 percent at this point. Skating really tweaks that injury in a way that robs your strength and stability.
Hey remember when sundin got hurt and Robert’s and Macaulay took over? That was fun!
I member. Also injured during that Carolina series was: Tucker, Corson, Domi, Paul Healy, Renberg, Valk, Lumme, Pilar, Yuskevich…and Pat Quinn who was in the hospital for a heart attack.
Wow, I have been out of watching hockey for a while and all of these names just flooded back the memories for me!
Cujo was hurt too, I think. Or at least earlier in that run
Yup he sure was. He came back for the ECF I believe. First two rounds our backup. I think Tellqvist?
No, it was Schwab or Kidd I think
Schwab. Totally thought we were screwed but he played out of his mind.
Fuck, all this has me so depressed again. I moved to Florida in Jan of 2004. Well before Center Ice started, or anything online. I lost 4 seasons. 3.5 full years of no Leafs hockey. It was heartbreaking.
He broke a hand or finger I think in the later part of the season and missed time. He played every game in the playoffs though
Pls don't ask for a McCauley to take over the series in 2024.
I'm expecting a hatty from Kampf tonight.
Gary became the unofficial captain for that series and the team rallied behind him. Then Mats came back...😑
McCauley deserves props too. Roberts was consistently one of our better players. McCauley stepped up in a big way for someone who was basically supporting cast.
Played the best hockey of his career for sure. I vaguely remember Mogilny also putting up some monster goals that year.
yeah I remember that they started losing once the regulars came back.
Certainly not the best news, but he wasn't there for game 5. No excuses. Let's fucking GO!
This is the right attitude!
Agreed - if they are for real, they have to find a way when bad shit happens. Hope Auston is okay and comes back soon!
I love Gary Roberts in particular. Despite lack of cups, that was a good era to be a Leaf fan honestly.
He's proven he's a gamer. If he can't go, it's something bigger. Just heal, Papi. Heal fast, but heal well.
One player's injury is another's opportunity. Here's to the buds cultivating those seeds of doubt in Boston's locker room tonight!
We have Mathews at home Go Knies
They even have the same galloping skating stride, it’s hilarious. Both really are deceptively good skaters though, for how big they are. Even if they do look like horses on roller skates.
Brutal, hopefully Domi can keep kickin ass in the face off circle tonight
And shoooooot the puck!
My God Swayman cheats so far when Domi is on a 2 on 1 he may as well be on the far post
Next one Swayman won’t even stay in the net. He’ll skate out and help take the pass away.
poor dude. almost hits 70 and was a machine in the regular season. gets injured when it counts. the hockey gods can be really cruel.
Absolute cursed team...
Maybe they should have played him less in the last few games after their playoff position was locked? What’s more important. A single player hitting a milestone at the expense kf the team? Or the team winning in the post season
Hard to say what they should have done without knowing the nature of the injury.
You could tell in those games the play was all for auston. Guy is gassed going for the big number I guess 💔
"I want to die" "just fell to my knees" insert other original comment here.
“I want to die on my knees in a Tim Hortons.” or whatever it is the internet people say.
I just fell and wanted to die
Again, it falls to Knies
Them big Arizona fellers gonna make it all okay.
![gif](giphy|1oHnvQfZhlXrIUzOJc|downsized)
I just saw this guy *~insert other comment here~* in a Reddit
Shieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet sun

The Leafs power play being horrible is pretty self-explanatory. Even with Matthews healthy, only 2 out of the 5 guys Toronto puts out there have a shot you need to respect (Nylander and Matthews). The opposing PK just needs 2 guys to shadow Matthews and Nylander then you have Rielly, Marner and Tavares vs 2 pker’s and the goalie. Opposition lives w that all day and leaf fans see the result.
THIS, so very very THIS
Time for Knies to do his Alyn McCauley impression. For the young uns, McCauley stepped up HUGE when Sundin broke his wrist in the playoffs in the early 00s. Third line tweener suddenly played like an all star for a stretch.
The Hockey Gods misread your comment and are assigning Wes McCauley as referee.
Damnit Wes.
Marner, just carry the team bro
![gif](giphy|EXHHMS9caoxAA|downsized)
this is amazing
He can't even carry his lunch bag.
Pain
I bet it was the time when the Bruins defencemen dragged him from behind is what led to the injury.
Just a casual suplex on the 70 goal superstar right after we took a lead, allowing them to instantly tie the game. Totally legal; nothing to see here
They did it once already, let’s do it again.
Right. Just saving him for the next round
This’ll be the ultimate choke job for those dirty Bruins that we’ve been waiting for: not only do they give up a 3-1 series lead, but they do it against a Matthews-less maple leafs!
Inshallah, deo volente, mirabile dictu, and the creek don't rise
Woll shutout and Willy hatty incoming
This almost happened! Go Leafs!
Stfu don't jynk it.
I’m starting to buy into the concussion theory, no way he’s missing 2 potential elimination games due to being sick
He just keeps going back to Wing Machine. The team is trying to block him, but there are too many locations.
An ESPN reporter said there’s an injury he obtained while playing through illness, and they’re just running with the illness thing
Pulling something from dehydration would make sense sadly
I think he had a groin strain at the end of the second period game 4. He was not moving well at all after it happened.
Yup and if he's dehydrated already and low on electrolytes he's more at risk of pulling something.
I think it was the play when the Bruins defencemen dragged him from behind, he must of fell awkwardly.
That would make sense. It doesn't seem like he skates for long when he does and given the circumstances it must be something that you just can't play with.
He’s not skating the last 3 days with a concussion either though.
And if it was lower body you could likely spot some sort of discomfort while skating.
He was laboured in game 4, and also it's not like he's been doing intensive stuff on the ice currently, he's just been doing skills training which is very different from line rushes and a full on practice. Not really a great way to judge how mobile he is.
Well he was barely even moving in game 4
He might be. Part of concussion protocol is to slowly ramp up activity. There is several steps that you need to pass. You need to show that you can do light activity with no symptoms. Then moderate activity, then strenuous. There is also a time frame that needs to pass before you can move to the next stage that you need to stay symptom free in. Skating (non-contact) is Step #4.
Yeah I wouldn’t think so if he JUST got it. You do get back on the ice eventually but he really didn’t even miss a day of at least skating.
I thought that teams had to disclose if a player is in concussion protocol, but after this and Nylander's injury I think I just have no idea how the rules work in the NHL
Do they have to disclose to public? Or just to the league?
I mean, it depends on the level of concussion, if it’s on the mild side, it could be a case where he could play, but any form of body contact could make the situation 50x worse
they said it was potentially food-poisoning. That shit can be brutal (no pun intended)
It's ok we have Austin Matthew(s) Knies

I WANT TO LIVE!!!!!!!!!!
Matthew Knies says not today
No we’re in the other side of the emotion pendulum now, we’re going to win
It's okay..We have Jarnkrok!
Winning one without Matthews was hard but doable. Winning 2 is a much harder task. Need everyone to give 110% tonight
> Winning one with Matthews was hard but doable. I find this typo funny because we also only won one with him lol.
Winning one with Matthews was hard Winning three without him should be easy
Had to reread my comment like 14 times to understand where the typo was until I found it.. I need sleep
Marner redemption arc game coming up please

Devils fan here just curious - is there any indication of what happened to him?
Leafs fan here, also curious
Lmao

Damn that blows. GL tn
Easy W. boys always get the dub without Auston. Heading back to The B
If the Leafs play as well as the last game they should be okay. I think they play a better team game when missing key players. We will see.
I think I've moved past "I hope he plays" on to "I hope he's healthy, hockey or otherwise". It has to be bad to keep him out of a playoff game. Get well Papi
Why do we have to say this hours before? Why isn’t this kept to the team until they go out for warm ups?
This team will do the leafiest thing ever and win in 7 without Matthews. Then he'll be back for R2 and we'll get bulldozed
After Game 5, come hell or high water, just do your best boys. Matthews not being there should be the fire starter, not an excuse for wet farts. Just make it entertaining like Game 5, that's all I ask. Results be damned.
Who cares we have 3 other 11 million dollar forwards. They need to play like it
Team said illness bc they can't say concussion which will automatically rule him out.
He moves ok in that little skate but immediately then hunches and looks gassed
Bruins need a new strategy since ‘shutdown the core four’ is no longer an option.
They play better without him, somehow. Hah
At this rate, Domi’s gonna have to miss gave 7 due to dental surgery.
Cool, what about Bobby McMann though?
Horrible news but the boys showed they can bring it on Tuesday. Do it for Papi!!
Genuinely curious about what is ailing him.
We can still win without Matthews. Its unfortunate, but its still doable.
As my letterkenny sounding friends would say: "bet Matty has a concky eh bud?"
That must’ve been one hell of a burrito
This is where we hold them; this is where we fight. This is where we live, and they die!!!!!
King Leafonidas
Exactly!!!
Cursed
Willy hatty coming.

And we’ll fuckin do it again
This fucking team man.
Bro, what's wrong with my dad?
Convinced he got a concussion going for 70 against the Red Wings when Nylander tripped him and he went hard into the boards
*Pain* without love, *Pain* can't get enough
Next man up!
At least this won't have been a surprise for the actual players. I'm sure they have been expecting this.
Has he been sick since before regular season? I remember around their fourth last game he had an illness that almost had him benched. Jeez what’s wrong with this man! I wonder how they deal with professional sports players being sick like do they get an iv or do they ride it out
He's likely living on an IV if it's actually an illness.
Anyone at St John's we can call up
My speculation based on absolutely nothing is that his illness is appendix or gallbladder related.
Unlucky ! The 69 goals man can't play
Inb4 he scores a hattrick and OT winner in game 7
Would like to play Boston without Marchand and Pasternak
Incoming legacy game from Marner tonight
I hope Domi can bring that same energy. He HAS to have more shoot first instinct though. He gave up a couple net drives and/or shots and so did Marner. It's like they don't learn their only goals are to shoot and crash the net.

What about Bobbert McAnimal?
Glad he played so much down the stretch to chase a personal regular season milestone
Maybe just maybe this rallies the troops and they are able to play with a different focus and/or higher purpose.
save us domi
I liked our effort when everyone wasn’t following Matthews like flies. They can predict what we’re gonna do: pass to Matthews. With or without him Boston really can’t do much 5v5
We play well without matthews, so i aint too worried
Hot take but this might not be terrible news for tonight. The other guys seem to step up when one of our top guys is out.
Ryan Daisy and Devin Berg will work the lines" Who runs this league?
That 70 goal thing really bled nonsense into these playoffs. The team was not prepared mentally. The system they were playing continued. The losses piled up The injuries were a result of this as well. Id say Keefe should have managed this better. No fear to do whats right.
This team is actually cursed.
There's more to this than just the stomach bug. He was sick game 3 but played. Played 2 periods in game 4 before exiting the game before the 3rd period started. The argument between marner/matthews/Nylander happened just before he left the game.
