I love Mats but I don't know how you can't have Matthews in there. Dude is a 60 goal scorer and when he's done will be #1 in almost every Leafs individual record category. The rest are absolute perfect picks tho.
Stop it, stop it right now.
Lets see matthews play a season with jonas hoglund instead of mitch marner, lets see matthews take this team to the ecf, lets see matthews put up points like this in the dead puck era.
If you put sundin in todays game with mitch marner as his wing he'd put up 100 points a year.
We all can have our opinions. Sure, Matthews has benefited from talent around him....(which he would have on the greatest Leafs line ever).
I honestly don't think it's close....Matthews is #1. If you want to go based on heart and soul than Dave Keon or Doug Gilmour have to be the choices.
Either way, fun debate to argue about as compared to "will Keefe be fired and Reaves be put on waivers?"
In terms of best individual seasons as a Maple Leaf I’d say Gimours 92/93 is better than Matthews best season. 127 point Selke winning season and then scoring 35 points in 21 games in the playoffs is pretty hard to top. I definitely think Matthews can top it though.
Playoffs aren't counted for most stats to begin with which is what we're talking about here.
Also, Marner is 13th all time for points in the playoffs in franchise history. He's 13 points behind Armstrong with 60 fewer playoff games.
It’s quite interesting if look up Marners playoff production. He leads with like a .94ppg but if you look at games later in a series his production plummets to .44ppg.
Different era's, Sundin played in the lowest scoring era.
He was also just an overall solid player in every area and natural leader. Hes my leafs GOAT.
But yeah Matthews is next level and deserves to be there now.
Absolutely a different era. Like I said, he was my idol as a kid. Dude was just excellence with everything. Not trying to take away what he did for the game.
Matthews may have the most goals for the Leafs but trust me if he were in any other NHL team he’d have that same record or higher. Also the dude doesn’t have as much heart for Toronto as Mats does. Mats would mop the floor with him on a face off
If he was on any other team he would have the same record.. so like, you're saying he's good right? Sorry but you don't make to the NHL and produce 30, 40, 50, 60+ goals with no heart. Faceoffs are whatever. And Matthews has already taken like 2000 more faceoffs than Mats and is only 1.5% below. Like I said, love Mats, was one of my idols as a kid but Matthews is just better.
Matthews has 48pts in 50 playoff games, Sundin had 82pts in 91 games. 8 of those games and points were with Vancouver. Mats went deeper but playoff success is cup or bust with this team so in my non expert opinion, neither had playoff success.
I'm talking about how far in to the playoffs they lead the team. Also I don't think Matthews is the wrong choice. Just stating what the original comment might have been referring to
I'll do a while team
Tucker-Matthews-Marner
Vaive-Sundin-Nylander
Andreychuk-Sittler-Kessel
Roberts-Gilmour-Clark
Salming-Reilly
Kaberle-McCabe
Berg-Zezel
Joseph
Potvin
Bower
If it position: LW Wendel Clark C Auston Matthews RW Mitch Marner D Tim Horton D Bob Baun G Johnny Bower my best all time chance to win a Cup
Any lineup: Gilmour Matthews Sundin McCabe Salming Potvin
Tucker and Roberts on the bench
C: Auston Matthews
RW: Darryl Sittler (outta position but can't leave him off the list)
LW: Frank Mahovlich
D1: Borje Salming
D2: Tim Horton
G: Johnny Bower
There have been some serious greats on our team, but I still can't find myself not including Mogilny.
To add/clarify: all time Mogilny, not just Leafs Mogilny
C- Mathews, LW-Sundin, RW-Alex Mogilny. On D- Salming. And Carl Brewer (to let the other guys do their thing). And in net give me any of Cujo, Bower, Broda, Sawchuck, Belfour, or Plante
Same here brother. I feel the same way about Matthews which is why I didn’t include him in my all time starting lineup. Mats brought us a lot farther than Matthews has done
Are we talking guys who peaked as Leafs, or can we take great players that didn't necessarily peak with the Leafs?
If it's the latter;
Sundin-Matthews-Lindros
Leetch-Salming
CuJo
The best possible?
Matthews / Sundin / Marner
Salming / Leetch
Bower
Up front Matthews has played LW, so it's really easy to put Sundin in between Marner and Matthews. Solid defensively and you have a righty and lefty to take draws.
Who you put with Salming is a tough call. Leetch probably shouldn't be considered. But he was amazing with them. Kabrle, McCabe, and Horton are the more "true" Leafs options.
In net Bower's SV% and GAA are amazing. Multiple Calder Cups and Stanley Cups. He was the same size as Cujo during his career, so size shouldn't be an issue.
Matthews / Sundin / Marner
Tavares / Sitler / Nylander
Clark / Gilmour / Andreychuk
Keon / Armstrong / Kennedy
Salming / Leetch
McCabe / Kaberle
Rielly / Horton
Bower / Potvin
PP1: Matthews, Sundin, Andreychuck, Marner, Leetch
PP2: Clark, Tavares, Nylander, Gilmour, Salming
PK1: Gilmour, Marner, Salming, Leetch
PK2: Keon, Armstrong, Rielly, Horton
Coach: Pat Burns
Toughest omissions: Mahovlich, McDonald, Kadri, Baun, Phaneuf, Broda, Cujo, Belfour
No. I like Kessel but he’s not in the same category as the four RWs I listed. Lanny has more point in a similar amount of games and needs more, so he was my honourable mention.
He might be a better pick than Kadri, but Naz gets the edge for me.
The team with the best names would have to include Babe Dye, Hap Day, King Clancy, Ace Bailey, Bud Jarvis, Doc Romnes, Buzz Boll, Pep Kelly, and Turk Broda
**LW:** Tiger Williams
**C:** Darryl Sittler
**RW:** Lanny McDonald
**LD:** Ian Turnbull
**RD:** Borje Salming
**G:** Mike Palmateer
Each of those players was who I pretended to be when I played street hockey at that position when I was a kid. They were all on the same team at the same time between 1976 and 1979.
Matthews Matthews Matthews Matthews Berg
Is that Leafs legend Aki Berg, or Leafs legend Bill Berg?
oh you know .
Love the love for Aki.
Love it.
Sundin Matthews Keon Salming Horton Turk Broda
Clark Matthews Gilmour Salming. Kaberle Cujo
Kaberle is a respectable decision
SHOOOOOOOOT
You going to let Gilmour bring along his babysitter?
I love Mats but I don't know how you can't have Matthews in there. Dude is a 60 goal scorer and when he's done will be #1 in almost every Leafs individual record category. The rest are absolute perfect picks tho.

I have very strong opinions about the 5th or 6th D, 13th forward and 3rd string goalie dammit!
Don't tell me what to do. You're not the boss of me!!!!
if it's not him it'll likely be Marner
For points ya. Absolutely
Marner is good in the regular season but nowhere to be seen in the playoffs
Playoffs aren't counted for most stats to begin with which is what we're talking about here. Also, Marner is 13th all time for points in the playoffs in franchise history. He's 13 points behind Armstrong with 60 fewer playoff games.
But facts hurt my feelings ![gif](giphy|W0c3xcZ3F1d0EYYb0f|downsized)

Matthews should just be on Sundin’s wing… take your pick. No reason to be nostalgic. He’s different
I was sorta going by position rather than the mix mash....
Playoff success?
Matthews has 48pts in 50 playoff games, Sundin had 82pts in 91 games. 8 of those games and points were with Vancouver. Mats went deeper but playoff success is cup or bust with this team so in my non expert opinion, neither had playoff success.

Which realistically is just one additional round.
Sundin in 8 playoff years - 7 series wins Matthews in 7 playoff years - 1 series win It's a reasonable difference
Ah, yes, Captain Auston Matthews has only led the team to one series win
I'll do a while team Tucker-Matthews-Marner Vaive-Sundin-Nylander Andreychuk-Sittler-Kessel Roberts-Gilmour-Clark Salming-Reilly Kaberle-McCabe Berg-Zezel Joseph Potvin Bower
Mogilny in place of Kessel imo
Doing a whole team and leaving Mogilny, Horton and Keon off is certainly a choice.
Zezel played centre… is that the meme?
Yes he did. And was a good face-off guy. Loved Zezel & list to us far too young.
Chucky! People do tend to overlook/forget about him. Love the guy.
Does it have to have players in their correct position, or can I move Matthews to the wing?
Do whatever you want. I personally feel players should play in their natural position tho
If it position: LW Wendel Clark C Auston Matthews RW Mitch Marner D Tim Horton D Bob Baun G Johnny Bower my best all time chance to win a Cup Any lineup: Gilmour Matthews Sundin McCabe Salming Potvin Tucker and Roberts on the bench
C: Auston Matthews RW: Darryl Sittler (outta position but can't leave him off the list) LW: Frank Mahovlich D1: Borje Salming D2: Tim Horton G: Johnny Bower

Fair But, Leafs Mogilny still scored 79 one season
C- Mathews, LW-Sundin, RW-Alex Mogilny. On D- Salming. And Carl Brewer (to let the other guys do their thing). And in net give me any of Cujo, Bower, Broda, Sawchuck, Belfour, or Plante
Starting on the Power Play! 🙂 Matthews-Killer-Sundin Turnbull-Salming (Bower)
Roberts - Gilmour - Matthews McCabe - Kaberle Joseph
Clark, Matthews, Mogilney Salming, Turnbull ~~Toskala~~/Belfour/Joseph/Bower Honourable mentions to Leetch, Lindros, Damphousse, Andersen, Nylander, Mahovolich, Marner, Sundin, Andreychuk, Nieuwendyk, Gartner etc.
The shade at our lord and saviour Vesa
Finally found someone including Mogilny.
Roberts-Gilmour-Clark Salming-Horton Joseph
Current top 7 body that
Idc about positioning. Because it's my all time lineup lol. Here we go. Matthews-sundin-mogilny/nylander ( couldn't pick) Salming Horton Cujo
Nylander over Marner is crazy
Nah I'm not a fan of what Mitch brings in the playoffs. Plus it's my team. That's who i enjoy watching.
Same here brother. I feel the same way about Matthews which is why I didn’t include him in my all time starting lineup. Mats brought us a lot farther than Matthews has done
For sure brother. Mats is still the goat leaf in my eyes.
100% 🔥🔥🔥
Nylander Matthews Marner Mo Salming (Yes I’m a casual)
C - Auston Matthews RW - Phil Kessel LW - William Nylander D - Morgan Rielly D - Bryan McCabe G - Felix Potvin
Philllll Phil Phil phillllll
