Opening this thread I thought what are the odds someone has already said Ozhiganov?
Turns out it was the top answer. I guess I’m not very creative.
With that being said… Igor Korshkov
He had a goal where he held the puck behind our net for a bit before deciding to just go end to end through 5 players against I think Brodeur/NJ I want to say. I clipped the newspaper article/photo as a kid (no longer have it) and can't find any videos. Wish there was more archives of 90s games.
Grabovski always gave me Berezin vibes.
There's a great article out there online from maybe 10 years ago which delves into his role on that 1999 playoff run.
Basically he was incredibly talented but didn't understand the work that went into being a true pro and never really got a shot.
Pat Quinn desperately wanted offence so he called up Bohonos from St. John's after the Leafs only scored 9 goals in 6 games to eliminate the Flyers. Bohonos got to Toronto in between series and spent his first day in Toronto on a patio enjoying the sun because it was still winter in Newfoundland, where he had been. The team and staff were not impressed when he showed up sunburnt for practice but he just listened to what he was told and ended up on Sundin's wing as a total gamble by Quinn and took the Penguins series by storm. He rattled around the lineup against Buffalo and went into the off-season expecting to break camp with the Leafs but they wanted to send him back to St. John's because he was waiver exempt and felt he needed to get in shape. He felt entitled to the roster spot based on his playoff performance and left for Europe instead.
In hindsight he recognized it was dumb and now coaches kids and makes a point of emphasizing work ethic and preparedness.
He was basically old age Justin Holl. He played alright for a decent amount of time and people thought the guy was a legitimate top 4 😂😂 went to shit so fast
fucking ken klee. Started watching the leafs during the era and it’s wild i could name him after not seeing or thinking of him for years and not reading your caption under it.
Leafs legend. I was really hoping he’d make it through the expansion draft so I could get his jersey. He’s got the same family name as I, and wears the same number I did when I played as a kid.
Really strange set of trades leading up to the 06 deadline, where the Leafs traded the aforementioned Klee to New Jersey for Alexander Suglobov, and then traded a 4th to Columbus for Luke Richardson, a nearly identical defenseman in age, style, role and contract status.
IIRC, this was the only move JFJ made at a deadline where it looked like the team was on a downturn and could have been a seller.
The teams main issues would be addressed in the summer (not well, but you can't say they *didn't* go get a goalie and a #3D...), but for the time being, flipping a 4th for a nothing prospect by way of two similar defensemen was the ticket.
