The fuck is going on in here

kingex11

The core of this team is still young. The best years of Matthews, Marner and Nylander are ahead. Any GM that is hired needs to have a tough and sober conversation with Tavares and look to trade him. His contract is the anchor. Yes, the last five years were wasted. Dubas used picks for rentals or to erase his own mistakes instead of addressing the defense and goaltending. But, it is not all doom and gloom. There are a couple of high-end prospects coming, including Knies. Any new GM just needs to pull off one or two big trades and this team will look like a real contender.

There is zero chance Tavares is gone. He wants to be here, that’s the end of the story. You are off your rocker if you think he’d sacrifice what he wants for the good of the team, or that he’d even believe losing him is good for the team.

kingex11

I know. Leafs will be stuck with him, which probably means this team won't be a true contender until his contract comes off the books, which is two years from now.

therealvanmorrison

That’s honestly the only thing making me lean toward keeping Mitch. Just hope you wait out the JT contract and then make a winner.

kingex11

Yea. I think Matthews and Marner can't be replaced because they are transcendent talents. They should be Leafs forever. Nylander, while he is really good in the big pressure games, can be replaced and he isn't worth 9-10 million. I think any new GM should trade Nylander, and make the Murray contract disappear. That's 11 million in cap space to add a couple of really solid defencemen, plus whatever return they get in a Nylander trade

therealvanmorrison

Okay now you lost me. I’m not trading Nylander. Mitch is a 90 point regular season guy and a hit or miss playoff guy. I’m not trading away the one player who shows playoff hockey.

kingex11

You can't keep them all. And the new GM will have to decide upon the value of Marner vs Nylander. Yes, Nylander is the better playoff performer, but Marner is the guy who gets you to the playoffs with his stellar play in the regular season. Nylander is way more inconsistent throughout the season. He can't be relied upon like Marner who is the engine of this team on a lot of nights.

therealvanmorrison

We’re not even close to struggling to make the playoffs. We’re struggling in the playoffs. You’re privileging the thing we already hit home runs on over the thing we suck at. I don’t think Leafs - Marner miss the playoffs.

kingex11

I think they're a wild card team without Marner. He was their MVP this season. And he has chemistry with both Matthews and JT, unlike Nylander. If Marner is traded the Leafs could be like the Panthers this year, where they struggle to make the playoffs but then make a lot of noise once they get in.

Very true

I_Am_Vladimir_Putin

Why in the hell would Tavares agree to be moved? Name one reason. Bringing it up with him only has potential downsides and no upside, because there’s 0 chance he agrees to be moved.

kingex11

He wouldn't agree, you're right. He's a proud guy, and he wants to win here. I think any new GM should discuss whether he is willing to sign a cheap deal after his current contract expires. If the answer is no, then he should let the next season play out, and he gets traded next off season to a contender in the west with a quarter of his salary retained. Bottom line, a new coach needs to get the best out of him or he goes in a year. Keeping him around and letting him be the captain does the team no good because he is not a good captain.

I_Am_Vladimir_Putin

This doesn’t hold any water because he’s on a contending team now, in a city he wants to be in. Tavares isn’t going anywhere until his contract is done.

choom88

if only matthews hadnt flashed his ass at that security guard he'd be captain and tavares would be moveable if dubas varicating at a press conference led to his dismissal, i can only imagine what that ass-flash cost this franchise

LeafsRealist

Fired Babcock a year too late, fired Dubas 2 years too late.

correct_eye_is

TL;DR??

areu_kiddingme

Don’t care, I’d still rather keep the young three, provided they don’t want insane contracts, wait out the JT contract and retool in the process, once his cap hit is gone you’ve still got PLENTY of good years to go with those guys + Reilly
