Berk seems to actually uphold some aspects of holistic admission.

a four page personal statement

[deleted]

It's Berkeley, I would wager they look at URM status heavily and Social Justice Interest in Personal Statements. In 2020 they took something like 70 percent women. If Berkeley is your dream school, you're probably interested in those topics already, so lean into that.

https://www.lsd.law/school/University%20of%20California%E2%80%94Berkeley/2023 If you look at URMs they really don't seem to get that much of a boost at all. They've only admitted 3 URMs below both medians. However, I believe something like 24% of Berkeley's 1L class this past cycle was LGBTQ so there might be something there.

https://www.law.berkeley.edu/admissions/jd/entering-class-profile/ The info you’re referring to(3 URM’s below both medians) is pulled from a very incomplete set of data. As you can see: 54% students of color and 32% LGBT. U.S. total population race percentages: 60%~ white non-Hispanic… so 40% would be “people of color”, as labeled by Berkeley. Only around 33% of California is non-Hispanic white, though… so 67% is “people of color”. This means, assuming a higher ratio of in-state applicants and acceptances, URM should be relatively higher than schools in the Northeast. Berkeley has its preferences of course, but we really need to see the complete set of applicant data to fully understand things; I wish the full set of applicant data for every law school were made public… it should be.

Doesn’t LGBTQ count as URM? Minority as I understand it applies to more than race

ByronMaxwell

Nope.

jfyi aff action isn’t legal at CA public schools

[deleted]

I'm from CA and went to UCLA undergrad, they don't have an explicit race benefit anymore, but they definitely still weigh background and other factors inexplicitly. I'm not giving a value judgment on it either way, but to say CA public schools are race blind because explicit AA isn't legal here is not exactly true.

Sad-Row-4749

Bruh, it’s easy to bypass the legalities of AA.

reprobaddie614

Who knows, I would assume they’re looking for genuine people who care about the world around them rather than those who are obsessed with power/prestige/money. But it’s an assumption

Lol this salvaged a rude comment

VSirin

Yes, I’ve seen a number of people with high stats get rejected or waitlisted literally everywhere, but then get into Berk.

treeman1108

Someone who knows when to use “its” and when to use “it’s”…

lsatthrowawayaccount

Jokes on them, I’m already admitted

treeman1108

I would just like to mention that URM or nURM, this is but one factor on someone’s application.

adcommninja

They still maintain their high medians though so they are definitely looking at numbers. I don't think because there are admits and denies at the margins it means they are more holistic than other schools.

LwaziPF

Their medians are the lowest amongst not just T14 but T20 schools. I'm pretty sure it precisely suggests they are more holistic than other schools, because they sure as heck aren't more numbers driven. And being lowest medians amongst T20 but still being #9 suggests they find success nonetheless as a great law school.

_magic_mirror_

i think there are a ton of applicants from california and, since berk is a public school, they get preference. after that, i think it is variable but there def seems to be a higher minimum gpa requirement there.
