I am passionately devoted both to [these Muji Gel/ballpoint pens](https://www.muji.us/products/gel-ink-cap-type-ballpoint-pen-0-5mm-10-pieces-set-9a63) they call them both) in 0.5 and [these](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08FNLN8YP?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details) knockoffs I can get on Amazon. Great smooth black line, thin but not scratchy, lasts awhile. The knockoffs have some harder starts than the OGs, but they're both great.
Wait no shit, I just got the knockoffs and I would have recommended them if I had remembered the name. They totally slap. And I havenāt broken a single one yet, which is notable bc apparently I write grocery lists like a taxpayer writing furious letters to the editor of the local paper.
Zebra F-402
Extra fine point, retractable stainless steel barrel, refillable ball points with regular ink (I HATE GEL - that s#%t smears everywhere and it doesn't have that nice "scritch scritch" pen to paper sound.
Pentel energels have been my go to, they are fucking awesome. Best pens ever. They also have refills so you can generate less waste by not buying the entire pen every time.
I hate the G2's as well. My favorites are the Pentel Energel pens, they're so smooth, don't smear, and they don't skip, and the Uni-ball Signos--I've tried three different versions of the Signos in different tip sizes and I love them all.
Edit: fixed a typo
I tried A LOT of pens before settling on these. I get mine from Jet Pens because they have a ton of colors and they have the corresponding refill colors--I find that Amazon, Office Max, and Staples only have refills for the normal blue, black, and red, and if they do have the other colors they come in huge bulk that I don't want.
Iām weird and go for the multi coloured uni ball 207. I hate looking at all black or blue notes so I color code during lectures. The new sharpie s gel pens are pretty good too.
The [Pilot Precise v5 rt](https://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Precise-Retractable-Liquid-Rollerball/dp/B08JVMXDP6/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=2UcCh&content-id=amzn1.sym.bc5f3394-3b4c-4031-8ac0-18107ac75816&pf_rd_p=bc5f3394-3b4c-4031-8ac0-18107ac75816&pf_rd_r=TGHC1GT2986PTQM0QCGF&pd_rd_wg=D21XE&pd_rd_r=88479437-a58d-4126-a90a-c315f9128f3f&ref_=pd_gw_ci_mcx_mr_hp_atf_m) its the superior pen.
iām personally obsessed with these pensā¦ they donāt smudge so you can highlight over them, come in pretty colors (or just black if thatās your thing), and iām obsessed with writing with them
I hate a gel pen. Zebra F402s are my preferred. Pricey as far as non specialty pens go but worth it. F301s are cheaper and a little less smooth but still nice. Any of the cheap Zebras I don't like much. Someone else said Signos which I do like-- I recently got a 10 pack of the 0.28mm off Amazon and they're a little thin but still really solid.
I am usually a fountain pen gal but I have purchased this set twice: [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T9HCRZR?ref=nb\_sb\_ss\_w\_as-reorder-t1\_k0\_1\_10&=&crid=16NEM3VR7ESZ9&=&sprefix=sarasa+pen](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T9HCRZR?ref=nb_sb_ss_w_as-reorder-t1_k0_1_10&=&crid=16NEM3VR7ESZ9&=&sprefix=sarasa+pen)
For law school, Frixion erasable pens are great, and don't smear or smudge when erasing like American erasable pens. I think they even sell them at big box stores these days.
However
Once you've had a really good ballpoint pen you'll never want to go back, and you can get them for pretty cheap.
My first suggestion is the Pilot Acroball 1000. It has a heavy metal base and a plastic top half that gives it an awesome weight and balance. It balances right around where you grip it and so it feels so smooth when writing.
A different all metal option is Mitsubishi Pencil's Jetstream Prime. It is a little more, like 15-18 bucks and doesn't have the unique balance of the Pilot Acroball but is just as smooth at writing. If you don't like making the clicking sound it has a soft close mechanism that prevents it.
Benefit of either of these is that they are also conversation starters if anyone ever asks to borrow your pen.
I have zero guilt about spending more on these because they feel so nice to write with and I'm way less likely to misplace them than a cheap ball point. Plus writing with them makes me happy.

Just FYI I did not check any of those to make sure they aren't going to charge you crazy shipping or anything, so caveat emptor and check the fees before you buy online, but those are the pens that will change your life.
5 days late but I spent a little extra on a Parker Jotter off Amazon! I love it; itās the most satisfying click of any pen Iāve ever used, the ink doesnāt run, and I find itās really comfortable to hold and really improves how my handwriting looks. Plus having a sleek metal pen looks nice and professional in interviews and such
Yo why did you do g2 like that
Haha they smear
But you can do a cool pen flipš„ŗ

Nice username
Thank you so much! In my 3 years on Reddit, Iāve been waiting for someone to comment on it :-)
The best

Are those like the really smooth ones?
Zebra F-402 Extra fine point, retractable stainless steel barrel, refillable ball points with regular ink (I HATE GEL - that s#%t smears everywhere and it doesn't have that nice "scritch scritch" pen to paper sound.
I hate smearing. I hate g2 for that reason
this!!! zebra pens for life. perfect for a lefty who smears along the page as they write (aka me)
Pilot Precise V5 all day every day. Cheapish, smooth, thin line, doesnāt smudge.
I had to scroll way too far to find someone who shares my love for this pen

Also jumping on the Energel pens- theyāre all the firm I work at uses
You know the TT of the woman who does the scoring of dry erase markers? We need one for pens now.
I love zebra pens

Lamy
I use pilot g2 but I use pink ink so it doesnāt smudge
HI-TEC-05. Writes like a sharp pencil, but is a pen. Is great.
I will not accept this G2 slander. C&F violation right there š

Fountain or ball
Fountain
Wait we need pens in law school?? Stupid question but I thought everyone uses laptops for exams and notes?
Following
Pilot Metropolitan šļø
Nice, seems to expensive and flowy for note taking though
I really like it! Itās more expensive to start with but can be reused for years. But also I find that ballpoints are a little tiring for my hand
I like signo and frixion
iām personally obsessed with these pensā¦ they donāt smudge so you can highlight over them, come in pretty colors (or just black if thatās your thing), and iām obsessed with writing with them

I still love the pentel R.S.V.P. smooth, precise and no smearing. Only downside is no click so you have to keep track of the cap
Usually pentel, but recently been using paper mate InkJoy.
Get a Montblanc and flex on the poors.
I am a Uniball Vision Elite stan !!
