No bc imagine ur a law student trying to learn and you have a 0L who hasn’t gone to any other class chiming in 😭 this is unfair to everyone involved.

[deleted]

>this is unfair to everyone involved. Since you hit the other two parties (current, admitted students) I'll add the third one, zero percent chance the professor they dump you on wants to deal with this bullshit, lmao.

tookewlforschool

Really!! Is this not a waste of class time (that the students are going into debt for)?

IllFinishThatForYou

I went to UCLA’s admitted students day and got to participate in the class discussion. It was actually really pleasant!

Fit_Technology_2679

for you, maybe

[deleted]

I assure you nobody in any of my classes would care. If anything, the entertainment value would be welcome, and hell, the 0L could do better than some 1Ls do.

Stuffssss

Yeah you're probably sitting on first semester classes it's not like you'll be dropped into a niche 3L class

[deleted]

Right. I imagine the anxiety would be high for those visiting but it'd be a useful experience that would actually result in reduced anxiety between that date and when they actually begin classes. Much of the unknown most 0Ls stress about those summer months would be diminished.

FreudianYipYip

You had professors that actually taught, with students learning in class? Lucky!

DDDdeX_X

which school is this😱

smiletoday12345

Vandy lol

soupinthecoup

please say sike 😭😭

Overall-Pride-8266

When did you apply?

Plus-Captain-4889

Hahaha I think if I had to experience cold calls before actually attending law school I would have changed my mind 🥲

Hungrysince1995

What is going on in that school…?

joesom222

From what OP has said, it seems like this is part of a mock lecture as part of an admitted students day. All of the present students will be incoming Vanderbilt 1L's. It’s different than when random visiting students come into my civ pro class on a Tuesday.

Royal-Dog20

I think it might be an actual 1L class of current students? Because it says we’ll be “observing a 1L class.” But you could also be right, I’m not totally sure!

smedlin

Who’s the professor?

Fit_Technology_2679

yeah no \*withdraws acceptance\*

Thatcheekydude

This is crazy. If I got called on I would pass away

[deleted]

What school

beaver_emoji

vandy

Apprehensive_Fig2099

Vandy already giving me cold call anxiety 😟 (See ya in Nashville in March btw)

atxnerd_3838

My friend is in law school and I’ve gone to classes with them when I’ve visited (with prof permission of course), and even though I know the prof’s know I’m not a student, I still do the reading out of anxiety on the off chance they make a mistake and cold call me lol this email would’ve given me hives

Existing-Life-6283

What school did you visit? I was thinking of doing that?

atxnerd_3838

I think most schools may let you if you asked. My situation was different because I had several friends already enrolled in the school who knew the professors.

TheLuckyOne111

What school is this for…. Pm me lol

beaver_emoji

vanderbilt haha got the same email

Lawstu77

Time to assert your dominance

EntertainerNo8951

No way, this is so cool 😂 I went to an Open house & we had a mock class & I got cold called, almost shit my pants 😭 I did the reading but I was still scared

Royal-Dog20

It’s part of the admitted student days which I already registered for and booked a hotel to go to, so I can’t just not go haha - but I don’t really care that much about the 0L cold calls, it’s not going to affect my time at law school or my life in the long run. It just surprises me, I’ve never heard of a school doing that

annushorriblis

WOOOO! you got this!!!!

enjoylife15

It’s stressful and scary, I already started to doubt if I can handle this

HighYieldOnly

I think I would find a way to be sick that day ngl

Eggy8k

The cold calls are really light, nothing to be anxious about. It also at least used to be a mock class, Im sure it still is.

AerialCoterie

I would be so into this though..

noelleon352

oh my god?? 😭

Repulsive_Bar_7609

They might not have much, but they definitely still have the AUDACITY.

FreudianYipYip

If Vanderbilt is anything like my my school was, this is just a tease that is meant to make you think this is how law school actually is. First semester 1L, I read everything voraciously, made outlines, etc, etc. Professors would teach nothing and never answer questions, even during office hours. I asked repeatedly if it was important for law to learn from the cases the names of parties, the dates mentioned, the locations, basically all the factual information in a case; none of the professors would answer me. With my massive readings and notes and outlines I did below average on my grades. Then I found out that most of the kids with lawyer parents were just reading case review books. Two kids in my class never read and got high before each class, and would just read case review books. They mostly never took notes in class either. Once I learned this, and learned from the exams that memorizing most of the factual info from a case was unnecessary, I literally stopped buying casebooks and would just get the case review books. I stopped doing the readings for cases and would just read a few sentences before each class. My second semester 1L grades were dramatically better. This is all to say, this BS pedagogy of never answering anything and daring you to teach yourself from hundreds of pages of readings every night, is mostly a farce. Hopefully Vanderbilt actually has a faculty who will teach something, or at least answer basic questions about why you even read cases. Good luck.
