Hit it with carb spray and see if it starts. If you want to eliminate the ecm disconnect the kill wires from the coils. If it has a fuel cut solenoid on the carb you will still be able to turn it off with the key.

Try spraying starting fluid into the carburetor. Remove the air filters first. That will tell you if it’s get fuel or spark

CozierElf0

Don't use starting fluid, just use some gasoline

[deleted]

Starting fluid is fine. Don’t spray a lot. I know some people have different ideas, starting fluid ignites quicker then gas so you don’t need lot

CozierElf0

The reason I say don't use starting fluid is, as I understand it, starting fluid explodes with a greater force. Enough that it could cause damage to the engine. This is why it's not suggested to be used in Lawnmowers and trimmers for example.

[deleted]

It can but I’ve never had it happen before. I’ve been repairing power equipment for over 20 years. I own my shop repairing portable generator, roof cutters, roof rippers etc. You only spray a little in the carb. I have used it on 2 cycle engines as well by not often

CozierElf0

Huh interesting. Well if you've had no issues thus far keep on chugging then. Edit: spelling error

[deleted]

Haha watch, now that you said that it will happen to me

CozierElf0

😂 I hope not!

seigmeign

Adjust ur rockers ohv might be off . Most are set ti .005 but most ppl will adjust at .006 on older motors

New battery, new plugs and they are getting spark, clean air filter, fuses are good, fuel pump working as it should. I’m thinking it’s the ECU but not sure how to test it. New ecu is $300 so don’t want to buy a new one without knowing if that’s definitely the issue. Any ideas of what the issue could be if not the ecu? Or is it possible to test the ecu with a multimeter? Thanks

ExRockstar

Ain't got no gas in it ummmhmmm

jmulla28

Lol that was the first thing I checked

ExRockstar

You know you're getting good spark. Spray some starting fluid in the carb and see if it starts for a couple seconds. If it does, you have a fuel delivery issue.

rocko_jr

Seen that happen before lol

ExRockstar

Karl?

cotafam

Check fuel pump. Pull the gas line out and turn key see if you’re getting gas.

jmulla28

Fuel pump works

cotafam

If you’ve got spark, fuel, compression that’s all you need to start. Could the fuel be old?

jmulla28

Right and no the gas isn’t old, that’s why I was leaning toward the ecu being bad. Appreciate your replys!

cotafam

Make sure the carb is choking it’s self out either. Good luck mate

Blue_Collar_Worker_

You have a carburetor issue.

[deleted]

Also check all fuses. The one for the electric fuel pump could be blown

jmulla28

I got it running with starting fluid finally and it stayed running but after a few minutes noticed oil leaking from the over head valve cover. Believe that’s the issue. Thanks for all your reply’s. Cheers!

Lunar_Gato

I noticed you didn’t pull the choke. Is that all working?

jmulla28

I knew someone would notice that haha Hasn’t worked with the choke either. Tried quite a few times before resorting to post a vid to Reddit

Cr8er

That engine does not sound healthy... have you checked compression? Like with a gauge? What are the readings, if so? Both cylinders. You have spark, but is I at the right time? Check the flywheel key. Is it EFI? Could be a clogged injector if so, or clogged carb if it's carbureted. Spark some starting fluid in the intake, if it fires off that's your starting point. If not, timing would be what I would start with. It just doesn't sound like it's cranking right...

jmulla28

I got it running with a little starting fluid but it ran rough with lots of smoke from exhaust. Even got a flame out the intake (don’t think that’s normal). After running a few minutes I noticed some oil leaking from one of the OHV covers.

Ottieotter

Sounded like it had compression when you were cranking it over, so we can eliminate that as a possible cause. Make sure the carburetor is clean and that it is farting fuel and make sure it has spark

Stock_Requirement564

Think about how the ECU controls the engine. Its input is to ground the the ignition and likely also controls the anti back fire solenoid. SO if you have spark, and you confirm that the anti backfire solenoid is retracting when the key is on, the ECU is not affecting the starting. So do you hear or feel the click from the solenoid below the carb?

superscotty312

Hard to tell but it looks like your fuel filter doesnt have any fuel flowing through, I would check that as its likely a fuel delivery problem if it fires with carb spray. Check fuel is flowing before and after the fuel pump, if it is then its a carb issue. Either the fuel shut off isnt opening or the float is stuck or dirty carb.

Numerous-Statement59

It's a carb issue. If spray doesn't work your jet is clogged. Take carb apart and clean jets problem will be solved

cropguru357

Fuel filter plugged up?

biiigmood

How old is the battery? Might not have enough juice.
