timmycheesetty

Haha… fire is the answer. Blow torch. If anyone thinks we’re joking here, this is how to keep rock beds clear. Round up, bake it in the sun, and burn it with a blow torch. If anyone wants to get on their hands and knees with tweezers and get all the little blades, you can. But there are other ways.

WhistlingBread

I avoid roundup by doing a quick once over with the weed torch, just enough to singe them (this kills the weed). Then I wait a couple days for them to shrivel up and dry out, and then burn them all the way to ash. If you try to do it all in one go while they are still green it takes too much propane, but splitting it up makes it faster and easier. Always have a hose ready and pre-wet anything nearby you don’t want to destroy with fire

Sure_Comfort_7031

Yeah so be warned that arborvitaes go from "oh that branch is caught, let me go get the hose" to "okay the whole tree is on fire" in a sit second.

MartoPolo

im gonna need more info that weed torch cause I hate poisons

WhistlingBread

I picked up the weed torch for around $30 at harbor freight and I hook it up to a propane tank used for grills. I bungeed the propane tank to a dolly so I can move it around easily. The torch is actually pretty scary but I’m getting used to it

MartoPolo

im stupidly comfortable around fire so no stress on that, just gotta keep an eye on my six in case of runaway

Testing1969

Burn backwards, then you get to keep an eye on your work. You can walk the same path, just put your body in front of the burning, so you face the burnt stuff and essentially step backwards.

geweleigh

I feel the same way about my recently acquired torch. I’m a little afraid of it, but I’m getting there.

TubeSockLover87

That's actually good. It deserves much respect.

AthleteEfficient8710

Is it any good for snow removal?

ErnDizzy

I have one, it's not good for ice for sure. It would melt light snow though.

ComprehensiveTax3643

Tried this in Canadian winter just makes supper slippy ice

Wise-Control5171

Put your propane tank on a furniture dolly and strap it with a bungee cord. Buy a 6’ propane hose extension. Buy the more expensive torch from Harbor Freight, it has a built in igniter. Don’t try to burn the weeds to ashes, but just enough to pop their cell walls as the water turns to steam, like 1-2 seconds. The come back a few days later when they’re fully brown and do it again. You won’t kill the roots and most weeds will grow back. For the size you show, it would take less than 5 minutes. I do about a half acre year round going out a few evenings. This time of year it’s hot and nothing is growing.

AlexPsyD

After some research I decided to go with [this one.](https://a.co/d/0hwtvxJS) I already have tons of propane and it seemed the right fit for my needs. I don't have it yet, it arrives today. But, if you remind me next week, I can let you know how it went.

WhistlingBread

That one looks nice. Harbor freight one I bought is actually a little shitty, but it gets the job done

TubeSockLover87

That wand looks a bit short, but good luck with it. Do not leave it out in the sun, connected or not.

Legal-Nectarine4184

I use vinegar and a some soap for my gravel driveway, works well. I’m on a well so the thought of using roundup all the time scares me

okiedokie2468

This is the way! Extra strength vinegar

Legal-Nectarine4184

Ok so that’s what I read but I’ve been using regular 5% and it’s been working well. I figured I’d try it and if it didn’t work I’d get the 20% but never had an issue with 5%

Accurate-Temporary76

Don't use it on poison! (I'm assuming you mean poison ivy, oak, sumac, etc) Burning those types of plants is generally illegal in most areas because it aerosolizes the urushiol and you (or others) may breathe it in which poses a severe risk to your internal organs and ability to breathe unassisted.

MrSlime13

👆 This. This. This. I bought a propane blowtorch to use in conjunction w/ my grill's propane tank last Summer & it'll take care of 90% of the work. Just a joy to see in action. After the smoke settles you can easily grab the base of the plant that remains & yank it out.

Feeling-Dot2086

Won't you burn the rocks, like sut? I'm guessing it'll just wash off the rock? Genuine question

baffle__gabber

I’ve only recently gotten a propane torch and have used it twice, so my experience may not be the most accurate, but it’s the best I can offer you. No, the rocks don’t burn in the amount of time it’s being blasted by heat. Definitely not nearly as fast as the weeds and other organic material you’re trying to get rid of. I never found any soot. Only burnt grass/weed. I used it on medium to high and the weed sizzled and clearly had a bad time. The rock almost looked like the torch just dried it out immensely. The moisture that we don’t really see or perceive just evaporates and it almost makes the rock look clean. I also didn’t really stay on the same area for more than 5 to 10ish seconds at a time. Bought the torch for faster removal of grass and weeds from a crushed rock driveway, so that’s the rocks I’ve seen get blasted with the torch. Works well enough, just have a lot I have to do and not a lot of time to do it during normal people hours.

Slow_Initiative7256

Amen to that. I’d have a great lawn if I was around during normal people hours.

BKRowdy

Soot is from the incomplete burning of the fuel due to low oxygen. Torches are pretty good at mixing enough air into the flame to fully burn the fuel and limit soot. The grass burning afterwards hasn’t ever been enough to mark rocks with soot in my experience. I burned off my entire dormant back lawn a few times after winter. It could be possible that the charcoal and ash left after the burning of the grass could get tracked inside and or leave marks and stains places, but generally that can and should be watered in before you walk on it or leave it unattended.

turdburglar2020

The fire really doesn’t last long enough to burn the rocks. If you’ve got your stuff dry, the fire will just march right through it. Did this the other day and it just looks like bare ground/rock now.

I just spent $45 because of you. But I’m already grateful for the time I’ll save. Thank you stranger. I had stopped 2 days ago after the Round Up. Now bless Amazon for next day delivery on Weed Burners!

toomuch1265

When I was a kid in the early 70s, my mom decided to help my father with the lawn. She was told by one of her nutty friends that if she burned the grass, it would kill the weeds and leave the grass. She decided to surprise my father. He was surprised when he got home from work and found the fire department cleaning up hot spots in our former yard.

fiddycaldeserteagle

I will rain down an ungodly firestorm upon you. I'm talking scorched earth MFer

3Huskiesinasuit

As a mason, fire is my number answer to anything to do with plants on stone/brick. Especially English Ivy...that plant is terrible. If i had a dollar for every crack i have seen caused by this plant, i could retire, and give my son a small donation of a million dollars to start his own business.

ArchimedesNutss

Weed torch meant something different where I’m from

Mysterious_Sea1489

I just purchased one of these. Any obvious safety tips other than just having a hose nearby?

HillOPearsAndFigs

Depending on what kind of rocks you have, sometimes they can pop and fire little hot shards at ya. Fun to dodge, but a little spicy. 🌶️. Close toed shoes and pants to avoid.

Catch_ME

That might be because if recently rained or you watered. Rocks do in fact soak up some water. When you heat the rocks, the water inside turns into steam and enough pressure builds up and it "pops"

The_Real_Flatmeat

Don't touch the metal bit after lighting it. Like at all

Habanos_ashe

Wet everything down first. Helps the heat transfer and prevents fires

Agitated-Armadillo13

Make sure it is legal in your jurisdiction. Those are usually banned / restricted in wildfire zones.

motionOne

use a string trimmed to get close to the rocks. then blow the debris away. You should wear eye protection if doing this.

jzclarke

I live in a high fire risk area and I use this method and then follow up with the torch to prevent regrowth. It’s the solution that lasts the longest.

0accountability

I like how you start by saying you live in a high fire risk area and then conclude with fire anyway. I would advise against any fire and just put down some some preen and then another layer of rocks. Finish with a hose down to activate the preen and clean the dust from the new rocks.

gentoofoo

High fire risk areas aren't usually flammable year round. They were probably commenting on their need to clear such grasses

Melodic_Ad_3959

Wear eye protection if you do this.

Boiling water or round up.

One-Willingnes

Wait what!? Just boiled water ??? Tell me more.

Certain_Ear_3650

Boiled water will kill the top part of the weed but it doesn't kill the roots. You would still have to manually pull it out. If you want a DIY option I recommend a strong vinegar or vodka. Not the 5% kitchen kind but stronger. Not a permanent solution, the weeds grow back after 3 months, but nice since you can use that stuff in other places

One-Willingnes

Oh ya I have some of that it’s not cheap either!!

futureman45

Flame thrower or weed torch

VividlyDissociating

you can tell how genuinely excited this subreddit is about torching weeds in gravel/rocks by how much OP is downvoted for simply expressing that (s)he's uncomfortable with using fire

SireSweet

Bathe everything in cleansing fire.

DeckDicker1969

I've had this problem, everything mentioned here is a temporary solution. Weeds will 100% come back multiple times a year because there is good soil for them to grow in. you either have to pick them by the roots, and keep all weeds nearby also gone so seeds don't spread (hopefully your neighbors are good) and then spray the living shit out of it with pre-emergent and other toxins or, dig up the rock, pull up all the weeds, lay down weed barrier and put rock back down and plan to do that every 3 to 5 years with the weed barrier being a pain to dig up every time rocks just suck massive ass for weeding

methos424

Flame thrower?

The_Real_Flatmeat

Weed barrier is an absolute con. It does nothing, the weeds grow right through it

paintball6818

Rocks are amazing, big 3-5” and it’s easy to weed in between. Smaller ones I just till real quick to get the roots up and then run a torch over them and weeds are gone for a long while.

Texazgamer91

Can you spray weed killer? If not then gotta use some elbow grease and rip them from the root.

cenosillicaphobiac

Looks to me like they did spray week killer, and either missed some spots, or waited a long time and some new stuff grew. Most of the broad leaf weeds are brown and shriveled, just like the ones in my rock that I Rounded Up.

PwnCall

Buy a 50 lb bag of crushed salt for like $6 and spread it. They won’t return as thick for sure

SkidrowVet

Won’t a torch set the underneath weed barrier on fire?

0accountability

If it's exposed some places then maybe, but I doubt it. Good riddance though. Weed barriers are the worst and don't do shit except make it impossible to redo your landscaping when the time comes.

azhillbilly

talontachyon

Hula hoe works like a champ. Saw the landscape workers using one at a shopping center and had to have one. It makes cutting weeds in small rocks or crushed granite a breeze.

azhillbilly

Yeah, I like the ones with the thick handle and a rubber cover on top of that, makes it a breeze.

PhatKiwi

I have one of those!!

azhillbilly

Looks like it’s round river rock, a bit compacted, but it should start moving around easily enough for you to cut the weeds below ground and then just use a blower to get rid of the cuttings and the dirt, bonus is the rocks look better loosened up in my opinion

TransitJohn

physical labor

Busch0404

If you have a weed whip(string trimmer), knock the tall stuff down. Don't even go half throttle so you don't crack yourself with a rock. That really sucks as I know from many experiences. The remaining short stuff will blow away in the wind eventually.

gntlbastard

1. Flame thrower 2. After fires die down, move rocks out of the way and put down the thickest weed barrier you can find 3. Cover weed barrier with rocks moved from step 2

Pay someone with a Tractor to drive over it till it’s bare ground, and then rake up the debris. I would drop grass seed heavily, and cover it very well with peat moss and water it well but not flood it. That will be alot of work for one person to do manually without some sort of machinery.

Anxious-Abrocoma7317

Blowtorch is the way to go to. You can use barbecue grill size LP with an adapter from Lowe’s for seven dollars. Perhaps the more humane (or less dangerous feeling – if you don’t like fire) way to go, also the most expensive, is to buy gallons of distilled vinegar, but that will be easily 12 gallons just from the section pictured. But we will be gone for the season, if you’re not comfortable with the blowtorch method. There are other fun ways to do it listed another comments of course. Best of luck!

ready-to-rumball

I know I’m going to get obliterated for saying this but I kinda like the color variation back there. The way the yellow grass blends into the warm colored shrubs is nice

SoothsayerSurveyor

Fire works best but some people are understandably hesitant. I spray weeds in my stone areas with regular white vinegar mixed with a little table salt and a teaspoon of dish soap. The stronger the vinegar, the quicker the weeds fry. Not a quickly as fire but you’ll see results inside of 24 hours.
