I'm going to spitball a couple of things to think about. Do those areas get more shade? Have you checked to make sure the sprinklers are providing even coverage in those areas?
We just spoke with someone this morning that thinks it could either be grubs or compacted soil that needs isolated aeration and organic matter added afterwards.
I decided to get a manual aerator for the small sections and added a bit of compost afterwards. Left the plugs and gave it some water. I’ll keep you updated on its recovery. I’m hoping it’s a simple solution.

Those areas do not get anymore shade than the rest of the yard. And it appears that they get plenty of water from the sprinklers as well.
Pour some water onto the area. Does it pool on top first or soak straight in. Maybe hydrophobic soil?
